Ideally not ones that are nicknames! E.g. Jack, Jude...

Joel is 2 syllable Joe wul

I'd pronounce Joel as Jole. One syllable.

Job

said jobe

I love the name Job/Joby (as in the classical musician Joby Talbot who has worked extensively with Neil Hannon); but I could never have used it for three reasons:

  1. Job means persecuted, and I could never bestow that on a child;
  2. Most people would pronounce it like the word meaning employment and be a bit puzzled why you called your child that, so not really having the intended effect;
  3. Job/jobbie is commonly used to mean a poo. It'd be like calling your kid Turd!

Joel has two syllables for me, like Lowell or Stowell, rather than stolen.

I think most of the good one syllable names are short for something else.

The classics for me - John, James and Hugh.

If your style is a bit quirkier then I also like nature name Heath, Lev and Zev (Hebrew names meaning heart and wolf) and Bram (Bram is used as a name in its own right in the Netherlands rather than as a nickname).

100% Joel. Definitely 1 syllable. Just like Noel. The ë in Noël denotes two separate sounds, as in Zoë and naïve and Anaïs. So, Noel and Joel are 1 syllable. (Unless you’re my mum 🙄)

Joel is the perfect name, I always recommend it here!

The number of people on this thread that don’t know what one syllable is…

Neither Joel or Jude have 2 syllables.

Joel in my British accent is pronounced Jo-El which is two syllables.

The amount of people in this thread who fail to understand that there are regional differences in accent and pronunciation 🙄.

I say Jo-el and No-el

I also say Chloe

I know you think you’re being clever, and to be fair, that’s true of Joel and Noel, and possibly even Graham.

But it does not explain -

DisneyTokyoNewbie · 13/04/2025 18:45

I don't think I'm being clever. I don't think it's particularly clever to have a basic grasp that people from different areas say things differently. I do think it's pretty ignorant to make an absolutely declaration that one way of saying a word is the way it is said.

All of those can be pronounced as two syllables in certain British accents. I'm really not sure what your point is?

Can Ivo ever have one syllable?

Neil and Niall do vary a bit depending on the speaker. Niall is pronounced Neil in Irish anyway.

I always thought that John was a good, solid name, and Paul. I know of a young Heath, which also struck me as unusual, but nice.
