I think it’s lovely. I’ve not heard it at all at my nephew’s Welsh medium primary school.

Thank you ! I really liked .

It's the Welsh spelling of Mattie, a diminutive of Matilda.

Mati Rees was a well-known Welsh-language educator and writer born in 1902.

As a Welsh old-lady name equivalent to Milly, Maisie and Ada, I reckon it would be considered fashionable.

I only know of one - a young adult. She's lovely and I've always loved the name.

Could it be used as a name in its own right would you say ? I'm not keen on Matilda as I know of a Tilly that I don't like personally & her name is Matilda.

Mati is a standalone name. It’s familiar (ie easy to pronounce) but not common. I know of 2, both in their 30s.

SkaneTos · 01/04/2025 22:15

I have never heard of that name before (I'm not from the UK).
I think it's a lovely name!

pinkdelight · 01/04/2025 22:49

i only know it from the filmmaker Mati Diop, who is French Senegalese. Had no idea it was also a Welsh name. It’s nice though, I like it.

Gingernut1989 · 02/04/2025 14:16

I think I love it 😊

My Grandma was Martha, known as Mattie.

Mati is cute. It was the nick name my grandfather called my mother.

I don't think it is a boys name . It's an old Welsh girls name.

It's not a Welsh name. Just a welshifying spelling of an English nickname.

User415373 · 03/04/2025 07:40

I know two Mattie's, both are short for Matilda (most people wouldn't know their full name though as both have always been Mattie)
I've never heard of Mati by itself, though I think it's lovely name.

Matilda itself is a anglicisation of the German Mahthildis, meaning "strength in battle".

I think it's a great name. I once met Welsh twin girls called Martha and Matilda, nn Art and Mati.

Sure, names change all the time.

But just cause someone is Welsh doesn't make their name Welsh iyswim.

I'm Welsh and my name is Kelly. There isn't even a K in the Welsh alphabet. Even if I spell it Keli, or even Celi, it wouldn't be a Welsh name, that's all I mean.

To me it's like Kay-Denn or Jaxxsson, that type of thing. But you can call your kids whatever you like!

Agree with this. It's an English name, spelled out phonetically in the Welsh way. Like Besi (Bessie) or Wini (Winnie).
It's popular in the vein of the vintage name trend. I know a few toddlers called Mati.

Gingernut1989 · 03/04/2025 10:45

Maybe I don't love it quite so much now then. If people would think it's a made up name or a boys name. I just fell in love with it watching that tv programme and now I'm unsure. @Chersfrozenface was the one that swung it for me as I quite liked that it was an old lady name. Ah well back to the drawing board.

& suggesting it's like jay-denn and jaxxson has actually really put me off. I guess I am incredibly hormonal but I did have a little cry at the comparison to chavesque names.

I don't think it's any more chavvy in an English context than Mari, like Mari Wilson the singer - which is pronounced differently from the Welsh name Mari, with a long A not a short one, but still...

Or Ceri instead of Kerry, which I've come across as a girl's name in England and even Ireland. In Wales it's a well-known unisex name, though more used for girls. And it's the original Welsh name of the village and hill spelled Kerry in English.

Oh I wouldn't let any of these comments sway you, although, I suppose that is why people post babynames on mumsnet to get a full picture of various thoughts and feelings on a name. You loved it just a short while ago.

I didn't grow up in Wales but live here now and it would be quite normal to see such a name here. Welshifizing (what's the Welsh of anglicise?!) old lady names or any names is very on trend or even quite traditional in Wales as others have said, Ceri for Kerry, Sali for Sally etc. It's not a 'chavvy' thing to do in Wales, it's very normal. Even in England I wouldn't compare this to the Jaydenns and Jaxxsons of the world. I think it's an interesting name with a talking point, which is nice.

It's also fairly normal to name a child after someone you have seen on TV or a movie.

It's a nice name, I think you should go for it!

Gingernut1989 · 03/04/2025 13:10

I do know a Ceri but her name is Ceridwen which i assumed was a name on its own. Sali for Sally does seem odd to me which if that's what Mati is then I'm unsure i do like it 😬.

Yes the children were Mati and Macsen and I thought ooo Mati that's very pretty. But if it's short for Matilda then no that's a name I don't like . I just assumed it was a name in its own right and rather liked it especially as it wasn't a "new" name e.g. the Welsh author Mati Rees being born in 1901.

That's true about using mumsnet to get a "feel" for how other people would perceive a name and its certainly given me pause .

It’s a name in Hebrew too and I love it. Short for Matan which means gift.

LetTheWindBlowBackYourHair · 03/04/2025 14:35

To be fair Ceri probably more often is short for Ceridwen, rather than Welsh version of Kerry. There's a famous Welsh children's character in Wales called Sali Mali, but Sali does look very odd in England.

This Welsh version of a nickname spelling - Matilda to Mattie to Mati, does appear to be what Mati is, rather than a name in it's own right which is shame if that puts you off. But there are plenty of other lovely names out there to choose from.

Good luck!
