Matan is usually a man's name.
Mati Rees may have been a pen name.

I agree with @Foughtabadgerandwon . Celi, Nansi, Meri, Lwsi, Sera, Ffred etc are welshifications. I've nothing against Sali but Sal was in use as a diminutive of Sarah. Sali Hughes is Welsh.

Names like Mali and Cadi and Matilda came back into fashion a few decades ago.

I think if I saw Mati EnglishSurname, I'd think it was short for Matilda.
If I saw a list of names like Olivia, Sophia, Freya, Lily, Mati, Maya I'd think it was Ma-tee.

User415373 · 03/04/2025 14:58

I don't think there's anything wrong with the Welshifying the English version either OP. If you like Welsh names there's lots out there! I know a baby Anni shirt for Anwen which is lovely.

DanDin · 03/04/2025 15:03

@User415373 , that is shortening Anwen to Anni, not using a Welsh spelling of Annie.

In some parts of the world, "mati" means dead.

In some parts of the world, "mati" means dead.

In modern Greek it means eye.
I would have said short for Matilda if a girl and short for Mathias if a boy.

Gingernut1989 · 03/04/2025 16:41

My husband is scottish so we have a Scottish surname not an English or Welsh one. Yes I am completely off the name now knowing it has descended from Matilda as I really dislike someone with this name haha.

I do dislike anwen, bronwyn, angharad, sian and pretty much lots of other girls names. I find girls names more difficult. This was just one I heard and thought was pretty. We have been struggling to find a girls name and I'd like one that's a name in its own right not "oh that's just someone welshifying an English name"

@Gingernut1989 ,pretty much every Welsh person on here dislikes Bronwyn. it's a bad spelling of Bronwen.

DanDin · 03/04/2025 18:25

There are lots of Welsh girl's names @Gingernut1989 . The ones you listed are names that were popular decades ago (1960s -1980s), not the names that are given to babies now.

Mati would be fine.

Here' s a list of the most popular Welsh names used for baby girls in England & Cymru in 2023.

A shame you don't like Matilda!

What about Clementine, Madeleine or Madison? Kind of got the same sounds in as Mati.

Or short names that have similar sounds to me: Tamsin (Tammy), Hallie, Heidi, Manon, Marie, Bronte, Sadie, Katie, May, Elsie

Gingernut1989 · 03/04/2025 21:05

I have a Kitty who is Kathleen after my granny so Katie is too close. I also aren't mad for any of the other suggestions. Sorry I'm so terrible I don't really like many girls names !! I only don't like Matlida because I know one personally who just isn't very nice and it kind of tainted the name. I'll figure a name out eventually I'm sure. Gutted I've done a complete 180 when I thought I'd found the perfect name but I'm also glad I asked on here .

I had a female neighbour called Mattie when small - it’s a lovely name

DanDin · 03/04/2025 23:14

You could use Martina, Margaret or Margaretta as a BC name then Mati as the day-to-day name.

Gingernut1989 · 04/04/2025 01:42

Id like Maggie for Margaret if it didn't make me think of Thatcher. I've decided against Mati entirely now. I'm sure I will think of something.

You could also use Margi, Meggie or Meg for Margot - wasn't the Meg in Little Women short for Margaret?

I watched the programme as well and had the same thoughts as you. Mati is a beautiful name. Go for it!

DanDin · 04/04/2025 08:48

@RedOnyx , Margot is a diminutive of Margaret, so Meg short for Margot is like Liz short for Eliza. The diminutives were probably to distinguish between several Margarets or Elizabeths.

Offthepath · 04/04/2025 08:58

It's pretty common in religious Jewish circles, Mati short for Mattel, an old Yiddish name, possibility derived indirectly from the male name Mordechai. Although some people say it is Mati for the Hebrew word Matana which means gift.

Gingernut1989 · 04/04/2025 13:14

I'd not use Margaret at all. Margot has become quite popular since margot Robbie and the barbie movie. I know of one Margot and one Margeaux in the last 12 months .

That's nice about the Hebrew connection although I don't have one. But then we wouldn't have so many Jonah's and elijahs walking around if people didnt take from other religions and backgrounds. I have an Irish name because my dad is Irish and grandparents on both sides and cousins etc. But the amount of maeves and niamhs and aoifes in England and Wales is kind of madness now. Trends do just take on i guess from everywhere.

I'm off the name totally anyway now. My DH wants to call the baby James regardless of gender so he has a namesake and I am trying to veto this with finding something he loves haha

I missed this reply!! When the English speaking bloke pretended to be her uncle and the teacher said "we have a lot of mati's in the school" i was thinking do they really cos I really quite like the name. But the replies here have definitely put me off. Especially the matilda link.

Jasmine, @Gingernut1989 , All the letters 'in James'.

DanDin · 04/04/2025 18:02

or Jamesina, seeing as you are in Scotland.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 05/04/2025 21:58

It’s sweet but I think it needs Matilda (or something) as a full name

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 05/04/2025 22:00

Blimey - do not let him call a girl James, that would be v unfair
