Aleph as a name?

Title; thoughts on Aleph as the name for a boy?
Another one I like is Calix, perhaps as a middle name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Natalie Portman has a son named Aleph, I’ve never heard the name used in real life.

Calix sounds a bit close to the IKEA Kallax wardrobes, to me.

Would something like Cassian work for you?

Overtheatlantic · 28/03/2025 09:47

The actress Natalie Portman named her son Aleph. I’m quite neutral about it.

ClaudiaWankleman · 28/03/2025 09:50

Aleph Calix. It sounds like you got your words mixed up and meant to say Caliph Alex instead, the next ruler of a theocratic nation.

u3ername · 28/03/2025 09:51

With Aleph, I’d assume Arabic heritage. Would that be true/ would you want that? I’d see it more appropriate for a girl too for some reason.

Calix would make me think of IKEA furniture.

MrsPringledusts · 28/03/2025 09:53

Isn't it the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet? But my first thought was (although it's a different spelling) was "Where Alph, the sacred river, ran. Through caverns measureless to man. Down to sunless sea"

Darkclothes · 28/03/2025 09:54

How is Aleph pronounced? ALEF? Never heard of it.
Calix sounds like a type of plant.

EcruCardigan · 28/03/2025 10:08

@u3ername , Hebrew not Arabic. The Arabic letter is Alif.

@HiYouKnowItsMe , Calix is a bit too flowery

midlifeattheoasis · 28/03/2025 10:16

Both awful

Wishimaywishimight · 28/03/2025 10:17

People are likely to mishear and think the name is "Alf"!

u3ername · 28/03/2025 10:18

@EcruCardiganOk, thanks. I’m pretty sure I met a woman with that name in Turkey, not sure if it’s the letter or a different meaning.

DelectableMe · 28/03/2025 10:18

Aleph is Hebrew.

Starfishfriend · 28/03/2025 10:26

Think he’d spend a lot of time saying no not Alex / Alf
I think it’s nice though. I’d assume you were Jewish.
I agree your other name is too close to kallax. Cassian, caspian, Cassius, alexi,
dax, drax, yaxiel, Fenyx

Sherry1978 · 28/03/2025 11:26

She called her child Aleph because it's both Hebrew and Arabic and she loved the connection.

EcruCardigan · 28/03/2025 11:35

Calix is Kay-licks or Kah-licks and is part of a flower.

HiYouKnowItsMe · 28/03/2025 12:41

@Wishimaywishimight I would've thought the name is pronounced AL-eff so that couldn't happen

OP posts:
EcruCardigan · 28/03/2025 21:14

I think they'd say it as Al-if. I'd say Joseph as Joe-sif.

Darkclothes · 28/03/2025 21:19

@Wishimaywishimight I would've thought the name is pronounced AL-eff so that couldn't happen

OP- Does that mean that even you don't know how its pronounced??? 😕

EcruCardigan · 28/03/2025 21:43

I think some would say it as Ayl-if

Growuppeople · 28/03/2025 21:45

HiYouKnowItsMe · 28/03/2025 12:41

@Wishimaywishimight I would've thought the name is pronounced AL-eff so that couldn't happen

That doesn’t even sound right? Do you really like it?

Guggenheim78 · 28/03/2025 21:50

Calix means goblet in Latin. Does it have another meaning?

tellmesomethingtrue · 28/03/2025 21:54

Would it bother you (or your child) to have to tell every single teacher how to pronounce their name? This would be multiple times a day at secondary school.

HiYouKnowItsMe · 28/03/2025 22:00

I don’t see how it could have been mistaken for Alf, any way. PP who said AL-if or ayl-if would be right.

In the same way as people mix up Ernst and Ernest.

JillAndJenTheFlowerpotMen · 28/03/2025 22:05

If Aleph had a sister you could call her Beth. DC3 doesn’t get such a good name though.

redphonecase · 28/03/2025 22:05

@HiYouKnowItsMe are you Elon Musk?
