My DH keeps shooting down all my name suggestions, are they really that bad?

We may be expecting a child soon, so we have been stewing upon possible names. My recommendations have been Campbell if it's a girl (Not exactly as tribute to our insignificantly small Scottish heritage, more-so because I just really like the sound of it!) and Renn if it's a boy. Are these bad? I've thrown around the idea of Casimir, or Cassidy, but none of them seem to stick with him, is this a me issue?

I wouldn't use a name associated with a clan massacre

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 12/03/2025 07:18

Renn after Rennsport 😳 You would name your child after a racing video game. Really? “You have an unusual name, where’s it from” Oh my parents really liked this car game.

Wren is nice.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 12/03/2025 07:18

Campbell for a girl is absolutely dreadful. It’s bad enough for a boy.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 12/03/2025 07:18

They really are all terrible OP, sorry. Any others?

ThePussy · 12/03/2025 07:19

Cambelle - there you go, not like the soup. But still awful.

ThePoshUns · 12/03/2025 07:21

WetBandits · 12/03/2025 00:31

Campbell? Are you expecting a child or a tin of soup?

lol absolutely awful.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/03/2025 07:21

anareen · 12/03/2025 06:38

For the sale of your child please don't 😬

Absolutely, they'll get a few more quid for one called Elizabeth or John :)

TheaBrandt1 · 12/03/2025 07:22

Your teen will hate you if you call her Campbell. They are only tiny for a few years. Dd1 shudders at some of the corkers on my list for her.

PinkArt · 12/03/2025 01:14

The problem with a name like Campbell is less the name itself and more that you're bestowing the gift of hearing 'like the soup?' on that child for the rest of their life. Different is lovely but aim for 'oh what a gorgeous name' different rather than 'like the soup?' different.

This is a very English attitude. There are plenty of Campbells up here and it's very unremarkable.

It's part of the Scottish tradition of giving the mother's maiden name as a first name, about which many of you are ignorant and incredibly snide.

I actually think it's pretty cool for a girl, but she will always and constantly be mistaken for a boy, so have a think about whether you'd really want to do that to her.

TheaBrandt1 · 12/03/2025 07:23

Has the op said she is in Scotland and having a boy? Missed that if so.

Namesy · 12/03/2025 07:24

Awhimsy · 12/03/2025 00:50

I'd consider Elizabeth Renn, but Elspeth does not have enough vowels. Renn being a tribute name does mean I can't exactly change it to the bird name, but I do admit in typeface Elizabeth Wren is a bit prettier.

Why does your child need to be named after motorsport in Germany? Your husband doesn’t even compete in this. Elizabeth Wren looks so much nicer. Oliver is fine too. Campbell is the most awful name I’ve seen on these threads.

ThePoshUns · 12/03/2025 07:26

And whilst a Magnolia is a lovely shrub, it's also the most boring emulsion colour. Hopefully your hormones will settle soon and you will think of some less out there names.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 12/03/2025 07:27

Are you not even pregnant yet OP but already arguing about baby names?

FWIW, if you do want those names, Campbell (boy) and Renn (girl) are much better.

Hard no on all of them.

Campbell doesn't work as a first name imo
Renn I'm not keen, but surely it's a boys name anyway?

I love classic 'normal ' names myself so I probably wouldn't choose anything to your taste. But I'm with your dh so far!

Ideas: (love Elizabeth. Could nn Betty if you want something less used!) But there are so many possible nn I love it.
Eliza, liz, lizzie, Beth, Betty, lizbeth,

Isla
Louisa
Renee (there's an accent but can't findnon my phone!) Or Lauren could both NN to ren or Ronnie
Bethany
Eleanor

Fergus
Cameron
Callum
Finlay (my favourite I think, or callum)
Graham

Twiglets1 · 12/03/2025 07:32

They all sound like awful, made up names.

Maybe let your husband come up with some names and then you can like or dislike his choices?

I’m in Scotland and think it’s also a terrible name for a boy

mynamechangemyrules · 12/03/2025 07:32

I work with teens and we've been looking at name origins (learning about slavery) and the 'boring' names all interested and off finding out, the 'interesting'/ invented names all mortified and saying when they're old enough they're changing their names. An eye opener for me as I wanted 'out there' names, gave my children the 'boring' names for first names and used their middle names to go a bit wild... Was upset I didn't stick to my weird names at the time but as time's moved on I've been pleased for them that they don't have to explain my 'interesting' ideas every time they introduce themselves.
My sister has a v weird name based on my parents' history and has a strong love/ hate relationship with it. She simplifies it to a close boring name when introducing herself.

ShakespeareInTurmoil · 12/03/2025 07:33

Yes they’re dreadful. 100 percent on your DH’s side.

I like the boy’s name Oliver, for girl’s names I’ve discovered I like some tree species names a lot. eg Aspen, or Magnolia.

Oliver is nice.
Rowan is fairly unisex and a bit Scottish

Willow
Aspen
Hazel

Aspen,🤔Now, would that be ballpoint or felt tip.

With all due respect OP,in this post with the exception of Oliver (a lovely boys name) things can only get better.

midlifeattheoasis · 12/03/2025 07:37

Yes, I agree with your husband, they are all awful.

poppymango · 12/03/2025 07:38
  • I don't like Campbell at all, but maybe Cameron for a girl instead?
  • Renn looks ugly, but Wren is nice and might make a nice middle name - only for a girl, though.
  • Casimir is awful, sorry. Sounds like a villain from a bad fantasy novel.
  • Cassidy could be nice for a girl, Cass or Cassie for short.
  • Aspen is ugly and immediately makes me think of two things: asp vipers, and aspic. Also there's a real risk her name will be shortened to "ass" by her classmates. Please don't.
  • Magnolia - not a fan of the full name, but I have a memory of an old movie where there's a character called Magnolia and her friends call her Noli. Not the worst on your list!

Honestly, I'd start from scratch and go through names from the top 100 with your DH, and pick ones that you both like. Maybe with a couple of wildcards thrown in (literary characters or something). You may have to settle for your favourite names being middle names, but that may be no bad thing in the long run.

Rooroobear · 12/03/2025 07:40

This is defo a wind up. The more the op replies the more I’m convinced it’s bull shit

Flubadubba · 12/03/2025 07:42

If you like Renn, how about Wren for a girl?

Yes, but this child won't be in Scotland and I don't believe the op was a Campbell.

Lindsay for a boy is far better than Renn which sounds like Wren which I have only seen used for a girl.

It all.sounds a little premature as I don't believe the op is pregnant.

@Awhimsy what about Scottish names like: Mhairi, Catriona, Hamish, Gregory? It's interesting that you and your DH are on such different pages. Do you generally have similar tastes for other things.
