DH and I both like Alexander as a first name.

It's versatile and there are lots of ways it can be shortened. However, my husband prefers a different shortening to me - he likes Xander, I like Lexi, and I suspect my family will prefer just Alex because they are quite traditional.

Should we just call him Alexander until he can decide himself?

Or is this name just too fraught if we can't agree? (We do have another option but just not quite as keen!)

my name is josephine friends call me jo family either refer to me as josephine or phina.Everyone has their own nickname for me

Alexander is a fine name.
Classic and doesn't date.
Register the compl⁶ete name and let any nickname emerge organically or according to child's preference.

Awrite · 07/03/2025 18:51

Good solid name.

My name has various nicknames. I answer to all of them. It's affectionate.

NorrisToenail · 07/03/2025 18:51

I have an Alexander, nn Alex or Ali. Lexi is more a girls name

BCBird · 07/03/2025 18:51

Good name. Nicknames come over time and to suit the individual I think.

Ferrazzuoli · 07/03/2025 18:52

Alexander is a great name and it's fine for a child to have different nicknames. Although Lexi is a girl's name, surely?

skinnyoptionsonly · 07/03/2025 18:52

You can't really use Lexi for a boy

Alex is much better than xander for Nick mame

This is what I was going to say. Alexander is a great name. Traditional male shortenings are Alec and Alex. Xander is one I've only heard recently but Alexander Armstrong is not young so maybe it's been used in posh circles for longer.

I know an Alexander who goes by Lexi. It's one of the less common shortenings but lots of people use it.

I thought the point of a nickname is it is down to the individual person how they shorten their loved one’s name - you can’t just prescribe that as a parent!

Alexander is a lovely name. He’ll probably be Alex to most, but there are plenty of other options. Lexi is usually a girl’s name, but no reason why that can’t be your special name for him.

LBFseBrom · 07/03/2025 18:56

I think Alexander is a splendid name for a boy, it's classic and strong, means 'defender' and 'heroic'. As far as shortening goes, Lexi, as suggested by your husband, is usually a name for girls; I'd go for Alex. As Alexander gets older he will decide what he wants to be called.

Berlinlover · 07/03/2025 18:57

I don’t have children but if I had a son I would have named him Alexander, it’s a beautiful name. My own name has multiple versions, I answer to them all except the name on my birth certificate - I absolutely detest it.

TimeForSprings · 07/03/2025 18:59

Lex as a male shortening. Lexi for a girl.
Also Alec as a short form, to add to those already mentioned.

You are right :) I guess it's fine for each person to call him whatever shortening they like, and he will decide himself what he likes soon enough anyway!

I have an Alexander who goes by Alex (99% of the time) or sometimes Al

RosaAna · 07/03/2025 19:00

Love Alexander but not keen on the Lexi shortening for a boy.

TidyDancer · 07/03/2025 19:01

Alex is a better shortening than Xander. It's a great name. Lexi (as others have already mentioned) is vastly more known as a girls name. I suppose in theory it could be used for both but I wouldn't. Full name or Alex is best imo.

Pinkl · 07/03/2025 19:02

I love Alexander!

I know Lex rather than Lexi as the male nn.

zander / xander
Alex / Alec
Al
Ali
Sandy

TwilightAb · 07/03/2025 19:06

I have an Alexander and we have called him Xander from birth. He's only 3 and he can shorten it to whatever as he gets older. I love the name Xander though!

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/03/2025 19:21

Alexander nn Alex or Xander is lovely. Lexi is a girls name to me.

Vettrianofan · 07/03/2025 19:25

Eck for a nickname.

Aloysiusthebear81 · 07/03/2025 19:39

My Alexander is 26 and is an Alexander. His name has never been shortened. To be fair when he was younger I only had to correct a couple of people who shortened it. He introduces himself as Alexander and that is what people call him.

RuthW · 07/03/2025 19:59

Xander is lovely.

Lexi is a girl's name

HarryVanderspeigle · 07/03/2025 20:24

Alexander is a great name. Alex and Xander are my favourite shortening. If you prefer the full name, I have found that there are a lot more children around using their full name these days.

Habbyhadno · 07/03/2025 20:34

I have an Alexander, his friends all call him Alex, even though he's an Alexander at school (school staff call him his full name). He seems happy with his friends shortening it though.

It's a great name, go for it!
