DH and I both like Alexander as a first name.

It's versatile and there are lots of ways it can be shortened. However, my husband prefers a different shortening to me - he likes Xander, I like Lexi, and I suspect my family will prefer just Alex because they are quite traditional.

Should we just call him Alexander until he can decide himself?

Or is this name just too fraught if we can't agree? (We do have another option but just not quite as keen!)

I've got an Alexander and he's always been Alex. In eastern Europe, Alexander is sometimes shortened to Sasha, which I like, but i think it's thought of as a girl's name in the uk.

Alexander is a long standing family name for us, going back many generations. They have all been either the full Alexander, Alex, or Lex (rather than lexi). I love the name.

abracabarbara · 08/03/2025 17:48

Sandy or Eck. Wee Eck, Big Eck.
Nice and traditional. :)

Can't stand Zander ( when did that become a name???)

LilyJosephine · 08/03/2025 19:39

Alexander is an almost perfect name imo - great choice (timeless, international, popular without being ubiquitous, fab historical namesakes).

The only negative I can think of is its length- it will inevitably be shortened to Alex once school age so you need to agree on a different shortening if that’s what you want. But yes, he will tell you himself if he wants a different diminutive imo - could happen as a teenager, might be earlier.

Personally I’m on the Lex/Xan/Xand train - I find Al or Alex a bit boring, Lexi/Sasha/Sandy have mostly gone to the girls, and Xander sounds a bit trendy for me.

Arcticrival · 08/03/2025 19:43

My favourite boy's name. I wanted this but dh hated it and thought he would get Ali.

Alex most usual shortening.

Lexi just no that's a girls name.

Xander imo is a bit common.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/03/2025 21:39

Alexander is a great name. My preferred shortening is Xander or Xandy

Candledrip · 08/03/2025 21:44

Alexander is a great name! Though Lexi is very much a girl’s name..

YourAmberFawn · 08/03/2025 22:07

I personally prefer Xander however they’re all nice.

Don’t worry about family - they’ve already named their babies! It’s yours and your partners turn now.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/03/2025 22:09

You don't have to shorten a name.

steelingmyself · 08/03/2025 22:11

I love alexander and so many choices for how he'd like to be known as he grows!

I only know female Lexi's.

UmopapIsdn · 08/03/2025 22:24

Alexander is the best boys name ever. Only imo of course!

My Alexander is called his full name by everyone but me and his big brother - we often call him Xander. It’s easier to shout Xander up the stairs. Grin

Nicknames just happen so don’t worry too much about them just yet. While I do call him by his actual name I probably call him Bear most often. It went from rhyming Alexander-pander to Alexander-Panda to Panda Bear to Bear!

edited for typo

InsegnanteScozzese · 08/03/2025 22:41

I have heard of Alexanders being shortened to Alzo or Aldo, both of which are quite cool. I'm not keen on Alex, Zander or lexi (for a boy) but I like Al.

BrizzleMaverick · 01/05/2025 20:16

My eldest is an Alexander, quickly became an Alex.

He has only ever met three other Alex’s - one being an Alexandra shorten to Alex.

I think let the nickname come naturally, it maybe that family has one nickname and friends have another.

Firebird83 · 01/05/2025 20:45

I like Alex, Alec, Sandy and Lex

Littledidsheknow · 01/05/2025 21:03

It’s the most excellent name, but his nickname will evolve organically.
I have an Alexandra who was adamant when she was little that she didn’t want to be Alex, so she was Ali. However when she got to school she was soon Alex and had been ever since to everyone outside the home! We still call her Ali.

Lex is a very cool nn for a boy, like the supervillain and nemesis of Superman, Lex Luther!

Dustmylemonlies · 04/05/2025 22:01

I know an Alexander who goes by Lexi. It's one of the less common shortenings but lots of people use it.

No they don't. Lexi is a girl's name...

user1492757084 · 05/05/2025 06:23

Alexander is handsome.
Use the full version.
There are many nice nick names .. Alex, Alec, Al, Lex

There are the names Lexton and Lexus.

CurlewKate · 05/05/2025 06:35

My adult son is called Patrick. He goes by about 5 different shortenings depending on who he’s with. And also by the whole name. The only one he doesn’t go by is the incredibly cute one I wanted!

CurlewKate · 05/05/2025 06:38

Lexi is definitely a girl’s name. However, It always amuses me that people are strict about
not giving boys girl’s names but are absolutely fine giving boy’s names to girls!

CurlewKate · 05/05/2025 06:39

And incidentally, there are no children in the UK called either Lexton or Lexus…..

Oldfashioneddinosaur · 06/05/2025 00:02

My eldest is Alexander and I love it. Can be switched around/shortened depending on what they like
.

SnowFrogJelly · 06/05/2025 00:05

Love it 🩵

I love the.name Alexander. You'll probably mind that family will settle on one shortening, his friends another , girlfriend yet another.Don't stress about it - Alexander is a
fine name!

doodahdayy · 06/05/2025 04:02

DS1 is an Alexander. We’ve always called him Alex though. Lexi is a girls name! I’m not massively keen on using the full name often. I really hope he doesn’t want to be called Lex or Xander when he’s older but that will be his choice. Both make me shudder.
