Aside from most being famous peoples surnames, stage names or being just general nicknames, they all sound a bit try hard tbh.
Try going for a job interview and introducing yourself as one of those names and see how you feel, or borrow a child and then shout one of those names across the park and see the looks you get, or even go to Starbucks and you & DH get one of those names written on your cup and shouted out when your order is ready. This is a person you are naming, that has to live their whole lives with the name you choose, why would you consider naming them Ziggy?

IDontLikeMondays88 · 28/02/2025 17:03

Terrible unless you are a c list celeb (sorry)

what about Jude

IDontLikeMondays88 · 28/02/2025 17:04

Also Sonny is of the same ilk but maybe better than Ziggy or Hendrix

Neurotoxic · 28/02/2025 17:10

I wouldn't give a kid any name that's that tied to a celebrity. There's some dubious stuff out there about David Bowie for example and you never know what will come out about anyone.
A lot of those names are very artsy which will be very awkward for someone more introverted. What if Ziggy wants to be an accountant or prime minister? In that instance I'd go with the source name Zachary. And if it's a David Bowie thing I'd just leave it out. He might hate Jimmy Hendrix music for example as well. It's too much to put on a person.
You might like some of these?
Ray
Johnny
Axel
Kurt
Elton
Elvis
I think Lennon has precedence although it does scream Beatles fan to me personally.

Eiris · 28/02/2025 17:10

Phoenix - ok
Jules - ok
Bowie - ok
Jett - idk
Hendrix - ok
Ziggy - too nicknamey, pick a name
Asher - classic
Jesse - ordinary
Harley - common but will date
Ozzy - see Ziggy
Onyx - i don't think it will stick
Cosmo - classic

MrsMitford3 · 28/02/2025 17:13

I am hoping this is for a laugh-

they are such try hard to be the cool parent names they do the complete opposite.

Although I do know a dog named Ziggy.

edited to add I also know a dog named Ozzie. 2 in fact.

Jessieshome · 28/02/2025 17:15

Goodness, that's quite a collection!

Phoenix - I do know a boy called this, I was completely shocked when I first heard it! I think it's a bit crazy! but if you like crazy, go for it!

Jules - Nice, but Julian is nicer then you have more options.

Bowie - awful, unless you are super die hard David Bowie fans.

Jett - many dogs are called this, it's as much a dogs name as Spot, Patch, Fudge to me.

Hendrix - there was a character on Neighbours called this, It's ok, but people will probably assume you are massive Jimi Hendrix fans.

Ziggy- as with Bowie.

Asher - alright

Jesse - really like! I don't think it fairs well in Scotland though.

Harley - meh

Ozzy - are you Australian?

Onyx - I have no idea how to say this.

Cosmo - bit bonkers, but i think it's liked on mumsnet.

They're all a bit off the wall, but if that's who you are then why not?! Also if you live in a trendy part of London these names will probably go down well, or another city with a lively music and arts and culture scene, Liverpool?

Good luck!

Comedycook · 28/02/2025 17:16

Agree with a pp... extremely try hard!

I'd assume parents of children with these names would live in a gentrified part of east London and wear braces ironically...

I could be wrong.

Anyway....Asher is the best of a bad bunch

ShowAndGo · 28/02/2025 17:17

As soon as you give a child a name like Lennon or Yoko or Elvis, it means the first person anyone thinks of on hearing that name is going to be someone other than the person it belongs to. Even if my next door neighbour was called Elvis and I waved to him every day on the way to work, my brain would still flash up Elvis Presley when I heard the name.

The second thought is probably, 'Oh, wow, their parents must have been really into The Beatles/Elvis/West Coast psychedelia', so not even the second thought is about the poor fucker.

John, Liam, Joni, Janis, Kurt, Reg, George, Noel honour the same inspirations but at least give a child the chance to forge its own identity, instead of having someone else's from the off.

CryptoFascist · 28/02/2025 17:19

Phoenix - this can work as a name, not too obviously named after a celeb. I have met quite a few Phoenixes in life.
Jules - Imagine a baby called Jules...Maybe call him Julian.
Bowie - a pdf file
Jett - Joan Jett. Wasn't John Travolta's son called Jett? Can't be arsed to google
Hendrix - come on now.
Ziggy - do you want to have an earworm the rest of your life? Poor kid
Asher - Jane/Brimful. It's not the worst name in the world though
Jesse - a proper name. It is quite american, so if you're in the UK people would think you'd given a boy a girls name
Harley - Chavvy
Ozzy - Ok as a nickname. Oswald is a lovely name
Onyx - yuck
Cosmo - old man name. Cosmo Kramer.

Chunkilumptious · 28/02/2025 17:21

I think it's a bit uncool to be named after such famous rock stars (including Ziggy). It's a bit greatest hits, rather than any insight into what they were saying.

Asher, Jesse, great.

Jules fine, Julius is nicer.

Cosmo, ok,

Onyx, file under nice idea

Harley, Phoenix, naff.

sumsitupreally · 28/02/2025 17:24

I know a lot of them are too out there which is why I asked for brutal honesty so I can rule them out.
Really struggling with boy names, we want something fun and different but not ridiculous

DH works in the music industry so are lot of those suggestions are his.
I have a what some would say ridiculous name and honestly it’s never effected me negatively, if anything it’s helped, people are more likely to notice and remember you

Sorry, the only ones I like at all are Jesse and Cosmo, and possibly Asher. The rest all sound as if you’re trying too hard to either be "different" or to copy celebrity/pop culture. (Apart from Harley, which I just don’t like because it’s too common now.)

I think Oswald is a horrible name! All I think of is Oswald Mosely (raging facist) and Lee Harvey Oswald (killed JFK). But perhaps it's due a comeback?!

Snowmanscarf · 28/02/2025 17:25

Phoenix - I know a female Phoenix so see it as a girls name
Jules - shirt for Julian, Julia etc
Bowie , no
Jett - ok
Hendrix - no
Ziggy - no
Asher - ok
Jesse - ok
Harley - favourite from your list
Ozzy - no
Onyx - no
Cosmo - no

Wondering if this is a genuine list or a troll post as you have just picked Rock star names…

butterdish93 · 28/02/2025 17:26

Asher is gorgeous

Chunkilumptious · 28/02/2025 17:28

I don't want to be mean OP, they're mostly naff and or overexposed rather than too out there, most of them. And I am a fan of most of the artists referenced.

Some nice ones in there but I'd stay away from the super obvious musicians.

Snowmanscarf · 28/02/2025 17:29

Fun and different names …

Reginald, nn Reggie
Wilbur, nn Will
Willoughby, nn Will
Donovan, nn Donny
Solomon, nn Sonny
Samson, nn Sammy
Percival, nn Percy

sumsitupreally · 28/02/2025 17:31

I like Solomon / Sonny and Percival / Percy though just see Percy Pig

If you've got Bowie, why not David? If you've got Hendrix, why not Jimi? And if you've got a Ziggy, why not a Stardust?
And where are Mick, Charlie, Keith and Ronnie? And John, Paul, George and Ringo?

Saved me from typing @SackChute ..thank you !

unlikelywitch · 28/02/2025 17:32

I like Phoenix, Asher and Jesse.

Not to be dramatic but I’d be very wary of naming my baby after a musician, or any kind of celebrity, in case they were later revealed to be a sex offender or abuser (the celeb not the child!).

CrustyOldFrump · 28/02/2025 17:34

Try hard and not as cool as you think.

i think some of these might work if you were naming your dog.

RaininSummer · 28/02/2025 17:35

I like some of these as I like the musicians but I tend to save them for my pets which so far have been Ziggy, Dylan and Marley. If you must, can they be middle names?

sumsitupreally · 28/02/2025 17:37
