I like Asher and Cosmo. Also the suggestion of Solomon.

Good luck with the birth.

ForFunGoose · 28/02/2025 17:39

Not a fan of your list, musician parents I know called their sons Frazer and Shay. I think they’re great names.

nameXname · 28/02/2025 17:39

In ancient myths, the phoenix was FEMALE. Odd name to give to a boy.

Suggest choose a name that won't frighten the horses and then go wild as you like with a family nickname.
When adult, your baby -best of luck, by the way - can then choose.

NewMarmiteJar · 28/02/2025 17:41

Yes, none of these. They're a bit low rent.

I think classy old fashioned names are the wild card nowadays, think Vincent, David etc

mathanxiety · 28/02/2025 17:42

I like Cosmo, Phoenix, and Asher a lot.

Hendrix is nice, also Harley.

The others might be a lot for a boy (I assume it's for a boy) to carry off. There are some big and bold names there.

sumsitupreally · 28/02/2025 17:47

We don't yet know the sex.
Hopefully it's a girl though as our girls list went down much better on here
(Violet, Delilah, Flora, Ivory, Indigo)

Updated list

Phoenix
Jules (My favourite)
Bowie (DH’s top choice) what about Beau? Nn Bowie
Jett (My second choice)
Hendrix
Asher
Jesse
Onyx
Cosmo

Phoenix - like a lot.

Jules - don't like; sounds very nicknamey and a bit twee and also a name with very "middle class bro" vibes.

Bowie - a lot to live up to; David Bowie is too famous and too contemporary even still.

Beau - like a lot.

Jett - a lot to live up to; too rock n roll, sounds like parent aspiration projected onto a child.

Hendrix - like a lot; yes a famous rock star, but now part of history, plus it's close to Henrik, a solid Germanic name.

Asher - like a lot.

Jesse - don't like; too 'cowboy'.

Onyx - don't like; makes me think 'Bronx raspberry'.

Cosmo - like a lot.

mathanxiety · 28/02/2025 17:54

I like the suggestion of Solomon too.

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 28/02/2025 17:55

Are you pronouncing Jules the french way? It's a lovely name.

As soon as you give a child a name like Lennon or Yoko or Elvis, it means the first person anyone thinks of on hearing that name is going to be someone other than the person it belongs to. Even if my next door neighbour was called Elvis and I waved to him every day on the way to work, my brain would still flash up Elvis Presley when I heard the name.

The second thought is probably, 'Oh, wow, their parents must have been really into The Beatles/Elvis/West Coast psychedelia', so not even the second thought is about the poor fucker.

John, Liam, Joni, Janis, Kurt, Reg, George, Noel honour the same inspirations but at least give a child the chance to forge its own identity, instead of having someone else's from the off.

Agree.

While a name some might consider ridiculous (though it's all in the eye of the beholder and a matter of taste) may not have affected you personally, OP, I think there are fine lines and a lot of nuance to this.

I think some of the names are too lacking in nuance. A more subtle nod to rock or the music industry would leave the door open to your child to make a first impression all about him and not his parents' taste in music, iyswim.

Felicityjoy · 28/02/2025 18:01

Phoenix and Onyx - poor child. Too pretentious.
Jett - sounds like a dog
Bowie and Hendrix - makes everyone think immediately of someone else. The musicians might be your DH's favourites, but by the time your DS is a teenager they will just be old-fashioned. Would you want to be named after a musician at the height of their popularity 50 or 60 years before you were born?
Jules - fine as an affectionate nickname for e.g. Julian or Julius but sounds silly and too unserious as a name that has no dignified alternative.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 28/02/2025 18:02

My DD 11 is called Phoenix. She has had no issues with it. Never been told I am a try hard parent trying to name after celebrity.
There was a very deep reason why she is called Phoenix. People usually tell her that her name is pretty and suits her personality (she lives in a world of mermaids swimming with unicorns and magic)

However on typing this my other 2 daughter's names could be tied to celebrity/film characters. But to be fair the eldest daughters name has a very obvious meaning. My youngest... I had not heard of the celebrity until someone asked me.

I wonder if I am try hard person. I don't think I am. I come from a whole family with generations of very unique names so a common name would stand out more.

urbanbuddha · 28/02/2025 18:05

I like Jesse and Cosmo. Most of the rest sound like nicknames or, worse, pet names.

Moreteaandchocolate · 28/02/2025 18:07

Phoenix - no this is a fantasy bird
Jules (My favourite) - a bit feminine to me
Bowie (DH’s top choice) what about Beau? Nn Bowie - not keen - David Bowie. Not keen on Beau either.
Jett (My second choice) - jet engine - not keen
Hendrix - Jimmy Hendrix - not keen
Asher - yes like this - Ash is super cool as a nn
Jesse - too girly for my taste
Onyx - no - a gemstone
Cosmo - no sounds too hippy for my taste

IaltagDhubh · 28/02/2025 18:11

If you called out any of those names in a park, I’d be looking around for the labrador.

localhere · 28/02/2025 18:13

All those kids are 15 now and have to put up with their parents being 'cool' in a kitchen with sweary neon signs on the walls

Santasbigredbobblehat · 28/02/2025 19:02

I teach in East London and have a met a fair few children with these names! There’s three children called Ziggy. It’s very ‘Hackney’.

I really like Jessie/Jesse.

PuppyMonkey · 28/02/2025 19:11

My dog is called Bowie. Smile🦮

shoopshoopdedoo · 28/02/2025 19:33

Bowie and Hendrix - too tribute-y

Jett, Onyx, Phoenix, Beau - dislike as they just seem a bit silly to me, plus I’d assume Phoenix was a girl

Asher, Jesse, Cosmo, Jules (if short for Julian) - not to my taste but all fine as names

HOWEVER, I’d presume that you’d hate my preferred names, which are much more boring, so my opinion is probably irrelevant!

IDontLikeMondays88 · 28/02/2025 19:45

Asher is nice as it’s less celebrity-ish
also Archer is nice I think
Sawyer?
do also like axel (but not axl!) - it’s quite a common name in Europe I think

Namesheardinthewild · 28/02/2025 20:49

I have a family member in his 60s called Ziggy - and yes, that his is birth name, not a nickname or anything. I love that it’s getting love again ❤️ I know of two little Ziggy’s now as well.

My least favourite from your list are Onyx (just doesn’t stand out to me) and Jules (sorry OP, I associate it as a nickname for Julie/Julia).

GiddyCrab · 28/02/2025 20:55

Dune.

user1492757084 · 01/03/2025 09:05

The best from your list ..(The others I would never use, sorry.)
Asher
Bowie
Jett

Do you like any of your favourite musician's first names?
David 10/10
James - Jim
Robert - Bob
Barry

GabbySolisX · 01/03/2025 09:10

No sorry, unless you’re an A list celeb they sound like pets names. I like unusual names but this just seems cruel. Imagine introducing yourself as Ziggy🤨
