Accidental name theme - continue it?

Hi all,

I have 2 DS whose names begin with the same letter. I said accidental in the title because it wasn't a conscious decision to do that, they just were the names we liked, and I wasn't fussed about the same letter thing.

Now DC3 is a possibility and I'm wondering if it's better to also give them a name with this same letter, or to choose a different letter? Would they feel left out if so? But is three with all the same first letter a bit weird? There will almost certainly not be any more kids after number 3.

We thought about a different letter but same sound, for example if we have Callum, Connor and Kit, or Jacob, Jack and Gemma. Would that be an ok compromise or a bit odd?

I didn't consider a third child when naming these 2 and just interested to hear what people think (if anything) when they see siblings all with the same first letter.

Please don’t do it. Not only is it a bit twee, but it makes live difficult for them. My DH and his siblings have this and post has got missed up, emails and we are still trying to unpick a significant pay disparity between two siblings in the same industry.

BeaAndBen · 27/02/2025 12:14

Just don’t.

MumChp · 27/02/2025 12:16

Pick the name you like for the child. Don't fuss about letters.

User415373 · 27/02/2025 12:18

Don't do it.
My brother and I have the same letter, our younger sister has a different one, no-one has ever mentioned it and she in no way feels left out.

ReadingRubbish · 27/02/2025 12:20

I wouldn't. I choose the name you like the most. It doesn't matter if it matches or 'flows' with their siblings.

Stick to it and hope you have enough names if you have triplets.

Cheepcheepcheep · 27/02/2025 13:04

I’d say for a pair of two the same, one sibling with a different name isn’t really remarkable.

I know someone who is one of four and the only one not sharing an initial and that does get commented on 😂

But for no 3 I’d say just pick the name you like best.

stickygotstuck · 27/02/2025 13:46

DH is 1 of 3, he and one his siblings share the same initial (coincidental). The mail was constantly being opened by the wrong brother as young adults still living at home.

I have a friend who has 4 siblings and all 5 of them share the same initial (on purpose). That was a postal nightmare on another level.

Persnally I think, why would you? There's enough letters in the alphabet to go round.

Darkclothes · 27/02/2025 13:57

Don't choose the exact, same letter again!

My old vet had 5 children, ALL started with the same letter- I think it was J. I've seen this elsewhere, and I think its some sort of Christian, religious group.

If ALL your children started with the same letter, I'd rightly or wrongly think it might be a religious reason or just a bit odd.

As they get older, the post will be enough of a pain for the 2 you already have when addressed to ' Mr A.Smith' etc.

Catandsquirrel · 27/02/2025 14:00

No don't deliberately look to continue this theme, it's a bit silly. Choose a name you like. If you end up with Vincent, Veronica and Sean that's absolutely fine.

TheMorels · 27/02/2025 14:03

Don’t do it. Horribly twee.

NoctuaAthene · 27/02/2025 14:10

The post thing is a bit antiquated these days (and presumably even more so by the time this baby is an adult), it's quite rare for anything important to come through the post and if it does it would usually be obvious enough to anyone living in the same house who it's for. So I wouldn't let that decide for you either way.

Personally I'd just choose the name I liked best, if it happens to start with the same letter so be it but if not then that's probably slightly preferable. I think siblings called Jack, Jamie and Theo are slightly less notable than Jack, Jamie and Jake but neither is so remarkable it makes a huge difference IME

ohtowinthelottery · 27/02/2025 14:11

I have the same initial as DB1. DB2 has a different initial. It was never a problem or even discussed.

YourAzureScroller · 27/02/2025 14:21

I share alot of childcare with my Sil so our children are around each other most of the week

3 out of 4 children share a name theme eg flowers and one does not.

It causes alot of upset that they are the odd one out
As they get older I'm sure they won't mind as much but I would say stick with the same initial as the others

BettyButtersBatter · 27/02/2025 14:24

Hubs brother was the only one of 4 boys who didn't have a middle name. He ALWAYS felt left out, and he was a shitbag too. Like the post above, he always felt 4th best

HugoYorway · 27/02/2025 14:43

@NoctuaAthene , you don't have parcels delivered? Even I have parcels. I also get bills and things like financial statements through the post.

HugoYorway · 27/02/2025 14:56

I've checked the label and it's addressed to 'H Yorway'.

No idea if that's Hugo, Harriet, Helena, Horatio, Hercules, Hallie, Hereward, Hermione or Humphrey.

honeylulu · 27/02/2025 15:06

Just choose the name you like the best. Which may or may not have the same letter.

Same initials can be a pain in the same household when the post arrives too!

I once worked with a lady called Julie. She was one of 5 siblings and they all had J names. When she told me I mused out loud "I wonder what your mum was going to call you if you were a boy ". She said "oh I asked her that once and she said Kevin". Julie was lovely but not the sharpest tool in the box. I think Julie's mum was probably having a little joke with her ...

Burntt · 27/02/2025 15:08

Yeah it's a nightmare for post. We had same initials in my family and private post doesn't exist.

mathanxiety · 27/02/2025 15:18

HugoYorway · 27/02/2025 14:43

@NoctuaAthene , you don't have parcels delivered? Even I have parcels. I also get bills and things like financial statements through the post.

The person receiving the parcels would be getting a notification on their phone.

I think the post thing is a case of living in the past. Paperless billing and bank statements are the norm now and it will be less and less likely that anyone will receive paper communications in the future.

HugoYorway · 27/02/2025 15:21

The person receiving the parcels would be getting a notification on their phone. Not true for Royal Mail standard delivery.

mathanxiety · 27/02/2025 15:22

And even if as a society we still continue to get post, what's to stop people using first and second initial? I'm in the US, and post is always addressed to Firstname - Middle Initial (optional) - Surname. There's no faffing around with titles and no use of just a first initial and surname.

2025willbemytime · 27/02/2025 15:22

It's worse to do a different letter but same sound ala the Rooney's.

Pick what you like, don't try and do matching letters. People will think you're wannabe Kardashians.

mathanxiety · 27/02/2025 15:26

@reabies
I think you should continue the theme, and your idea of same sounds, different letters would work too.

With three children, it's very easy for an odd man out dynamic to develop, which can have ramifications for identity and family relationships that far outweigh any (unlikely) issues with post.
