Having trouble with BOYS names - what do you think of these???

looneytune · 09/05/2008 09:51

We have been told we're having a boy and are struggling to agree on names. We both agreed on a girls name no problem but boys names are proving a problem.

Dh and I have totally different ideas or if we both like a name, one or both can think of reasons for not wanting to choose it (i.e. someone we know with that name etc.)

This time round it's my decision but we both have to be happy (last time dh chose - he would have gone for Elvis and I said no way! but agreed on using his middle name instead so ds is called Aaron).

Anyway, here are some names dh has put on a list:

Kie (I'm sure this should be Kai though )
Rhys
Max
Phoenix (I'm really not keen)
Marcus (again not keen myself)
Christian

It needs to suit our surname of course, which begins with C.

So, what do you think?

TIA

As an alternative to Phoenix, what about Nyx which i think is greek for Night?

mumblesmummy · 10/05/2008 18:54

Love Kai and Rhys

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 10/05/2008 20:12

Marcus is a great name, a roman classic.

Christian is quite nice too, but it 'nails your colours to the mast somewhat' iykwim. Definitely not a jewish child then? I don't like that it narrows that down. But that's perhaps a very silly personal quirk.

Rhys does nothing for me but there's nothing wrong with it.

Phoenix is slightly ridiculous.

Max is a great name. Very popular, but still great.

Kie?? Please no.

mylovelymonster · 10/05/2008 20:13

Marcus and Max both great

looneytune · 10/05/2008 22:52

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for your honest opinions, it's very useful I've been PMSL about all the negative comments to 'Phoenix' and it's helped me explain to dh that we just can't have that name!!

He's now come up with another name that I'm hoping you'll comment on so I can make him see sense.....Austin - please help me out here!!

Thanks again

My brother is Cye, he's nearly 30!

choccypig · 10/05/2008 22:59

Tried to think of similarish names that may be worth condering.

Kai (Kyle,Karl)
Rhys (Ryan Emrys (sounds like Elvis ))
Max
Phoenix (I'm really not keen either!)
Marcus (Lucas, Silas)
Christian (Atheist? )

mylovelymonster · 10/05/2008 23:00

Oh, beeeeeeehave

cyteen · 10/05/2008 23:04

My friend has a little boy called Austin, she picked it as an alternative to Oscar which they both loved but felt was too popular. I'm not mad about Austin as a name but it really suits her ds and shortens nicely to Oz.

collision · 10/05/2008 23:05

Ned

cadelaide · 10/05/2008 23:07

Max or Christian.

Kai and Rhys are 2 of my most-loathed names, really can't stand them.

IdentityFraud · 10/05/2008 23:07

Have you had a look at the fantastic Baby name voyager? I have a Max - GREAT name and NOT AT ALL COMMON, Tommy! But yeah, have met a good few since having one. It is peaking again but only cause it is such a great name. Fancied Oscar till my mate named her puppy that.

puffling · 10/05/2008 23:15

only Christian

IdentityFraud · 10/05/2008 23:21

Yeah, but... isn't that a bit... Christian - apolgies to any of you who are - I am, sort of, supposed to be, anyway - but see no need to name DS something so loaded.

nixon1 · 10/05/2008 23:28

Please not Kai - chavarama.

Janni · 10/05/2008 23:34

Christian.

Rhys is OK - very Welsh

looneytune · 14/05/2008 20:49

Thanks for all the idea's Still working on things atm.

A few more names which came up:

Cody
Curtis
Miles
Joshua

Any thoughts?

This is really hard isn't it!! I just hope something feels right when he's born

MamaG · 14/05/2008 20:50

I only like Miles from teh last four

BigBadMouse · 14/05/2008 21:07

I personally don't like Curtis much from the last four. With the other three I feel they are quite distinctive and you'll know if your DS is one of them as soon as you see him.

looneytune · 14/05/2008 21:08

Hello MamaG

Thanks for your thoughts. This is one dh and I happen to both like, not in the same way as we both very much agreed on a girls names but hey ho, give it time

Off to bed now.

Night x

Angelsus · 15/05/2008 20:44

How about Noah? This is DS2's name and DS1 is Aaron, I think they go really well together.

Sebastian
Hugo
Leon
Asa
Robin
Tyler (Ty)
Harrison
Owen

Phoenix - no way jose - also more girly than boy-ey

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 15/05/2008 22:55

Am boring traditionalist when it comes to baby names. My first ports of call have always been kings and queens of England, the bible and classic literature. To that list I would now add classical mythology and ancient history, so Brownie points for Marcus.

Max is OK, I think, although round here it is (with Oscar) so common that it's the James of the 2000s. Christian only works if you are. The rest are (to my view) the names that Hello magazine stalwarts give their children and should carry a health warning.
