Hugo or Raphael?

That really - which would you choose? How important is ‘matching’ their sibling's name to you?

Raphael

I don't think matching isn't important at all. They are individuals and only in the same household for 18 years or so.

In adult life partners names often do not match and that doesn't matter, so why would matching matter in their first few years?

That said, I find it sexist when people give their son a classic name but are more adventurous with their daughter's name.

FluffMagnet · 06/02/2025 11:25

I love both (one is DS's name and the other was sadly vetoed by DH). I think as long as the siblings names are not polar opposite (i.e. Darren), then why do they need to "match"? They will go on to live independent lives and really, once they are named, everyone gets used to the set. My sister has a name very clearly from France, whereas mine is generic British. Never noticed it growing up.

Raphael

I don't like Hugo, especially the English pronunciation Heeeooogo Grin

Hugo

GiraffesAtThePark · 06/02/2025 12:28

Raphael! It’s my fav name of all time. I wish I could have used it.

user1492757084 · 06/02/2025 12:45

Both are handsome.

SereneCapybara · 06/02/2025 12:46

I love Raphael. I would have chosen it if Dh hadn't vetoed it as too out there. And I love Rafe as ann.

Not keen on Hugo. It reminds me of red-trousered Tory youth, probably unfairly.

HarryVanderspeigle · 06/02/2025 14:01

Raphael. Love it

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/02/2025 14:54

I prefer Hugo. I do like Raffy / Rafe for short but think Raphael would sound a bit pretentious where I live - unless there were links to family heritage.

HugoYorway · 06/02/2025 14:57

Hugo. I don't like Raphael and Raff/Raffy is awful.
Rafael is OK if you are Spanish.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/02/2025 14:58

I think it very much depends on your surname. Raphael Smith or Brown might sound a bit odd.

KayEmAy · 06/02/2025 16:27

Raphael - timeless and handsome

RuthW · 06/02/2025 19:46

Hugo - nicer name

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 06/02/2025 20:13

Hugo

PrincessOfPreschool · 06/02/2025 21:42

Where I work we had 3 x Raffy/ Raffi/ Raphaels last year or if 22 boys. It was v confusing! They were all called 'Raffy' by parents but we had to make one 'Raphael' as we couldn't distinguish.

Oceangrey · 06/02/2025 21:44

Just make sure you also like Raf/Raffy, and also be aware it's increasingly popular in some areas. I know a lot! But it's still a great name.

orangeblosssom · 06/02/2025 22:09

Raphael

theduchessofspork · 07/02/2025 00:27

Hugo

Mainly because there are so many R names about right now, and a lot of Raff/ys, although Raphael is nice

I do slightly prefer Hugh though

I don’t think matching names matters

Why? I think they are both good combinations

We have a baby Hugo in our family of three nationalities and it has worked really well. Everyone across the globe has known how to pronounce it and spell it and we receive so many compliments. It is quite popular in Scandinavia and France as well. We call him Hugie at home and his brother calls him Hoogie Boogie 😄😍

Radiatorvalves · 07/02/2025 08:21

I like both. I do know a lot of Hugo’s though.

But the pronunciation varies.

Yes, but it's only cute we think. Not sure any name is pronounced exactly the same in all languages

Notgivenuphope · 07/02/2025 09:52

Love both these names!
not important at all. They may end up living in separate continents one day!
