Deciding on a boys name and I think this is the one but saw a comment saying it was chavvy and it's made me doubt myself! Is it classless? I prefer Finn to Finlay or Finley. Other favourites (but I would have to win DH over) are Cassian, Caspian, Felix or Jasper. Help!

I love the name Finn 👍

HomeworkMonitor · 25/01/2025 10:53

Dated. very 15-25years ago I nearly named my son Finlay/Finn 24 years ago

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/01/2025 11:00

I love the name Finn! It would be on my shortlist 😊

Anewuser · 25/01/2025 11:03

I’ve known two Finns at my school, in thirteen years.

Both lovely children and the name doesn’t feel dated.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 25/01/2025 11:03

My Fynn is 21...still love it.

Raininginparadise2 · 25/01/2025 11:05

Finn 🥰

sel2223 · 25/01/2025 11:30

I like it but prefer to see the full name on the birth certificate so you give your child the choice when they are older and using their name professionally.

The Finn (Finley) I know is 8

user2848502016 · 25/01/2025 11:37

I like it, definitely the best on your list for me.
Cassian and Caspian I don't like.
Felix and Jasper are both nice too but I prefer Finn

Mumsgross · 25/01/2025 11:39

I have a Finn, he's 4. I love his name!

Emanwenym · 25/01/2025 11:40

I think it's cool but Finley is too popular.

BootballJoy · 25/01/2025 11:42

I prefer Finn to Finley (different names as far as I know). Don't think it's dated. Just looked at dark greener. It had a peak around 2005 (which would fit with PP's Finns aged around 20) then went down, then increased in popularity (to greater levels than 2005) around 2018 and has stayed around top 80 names since.

I think it's a lovely name.

Same here.

Because parents who wanted to use Finn were opting for Finley instead.
cf. Theo/Theodore.

I think Finn is a bit of a tearaway and Finley a bit wet.

Sk1sk0 · 25/01/2025 12:09

I like it!

SnidelyWhiplash · 25/01/2025 12:12

Finn is a great name. It’s definitely not chavvy. I’m not keen on Finlay.

I love all the names on your list.

TomNooky · 25/01/2025 12:16

Not chavvy.
I know a baby Phin (short for Phineas)

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/01/2025 12:18

It wouldn’t be my top choice but I do think it’s a nice name! Same goes for Felix.

I don’t like the others at all, especially Jasper.

chillipopcorn1 · 25/01/2025 12:23

Thanks everyone this is very reassuring! Finn is a standalone name in its own right so I wouldn't worry about not having a 'full name'
I also love Phineas but DH not keen. I can see 'Phin' would be a pain to remind people of spelling as a nickname.

Finn is far from chavvy and it's by far my favourite on your list.

I agree, Finn is a great name in its own right.

I see it as quite a strong, masculine, confident name, whereas Finley doesn’t doesn’t strike that chord at all.

All that sounds incredibly sexist and outdated, lol - but Finley just seems a bit ‘delicate’ to me. He’d be a follower, whereas Finn would be the trend setter 👍

Mirabai · 25/01/2025 21:53

I like Finn and Jasper.

The fact that Caspian is a character in a children’s novel puts me off as I wouldn’t want a child’s name as an adult. Caspar?

BeckyWithTheGoodBear · 25/01/2025 22:39

I love Finn. It's the Anglicised version of Fionn after Fionn Mcool the great Irish Warrior so it's definitely a name in it's own right and is in no way classless!

springbulbssoon · 25/01/2025 22:52

I've a 22 year old Finlay, he's known as Fin, and a bloody lovely and kind young man!😍

TickyBooo · 25/01/2025 22:52

I have one! No regrets and get lots of compliments.

beencaughttrollin · 25/01/2025 23:06

I prefer Finn to Finlay or Finley.

Me too, and I am Scottish, which is probably the origin (Findláech, and later Fionnlagh and Fionnlagh) and/or saturation point of Finlay/Finley/Findlay/Findley. Although there are also Irish sources for Fin(n), like Finbar. And others, like SVU detective Odafin (Finn) Tutola, who is of Yoruba (Nigerian) heritage.

Also be aware that the Gaelic meaning - white warrior - may be open to (mis)interpretation in these times.

spiderlight · 25/01/2025 23:20

I love it. My DS would have been Finn but DH's brother and his wife beat us to it! They had their little Finn a month or so after I met DH and it suits him perfectly but part of me still wishes I could have used it.
