They’re girls’ names. What’s your immediate reaction to each of them, please?

They're all meaningful and from our cultures, but - putting that aside - I’m looking for immediate reactions/first impressions.

Thank you!

Thank you, everyone. Some really great feedback!

I don’t particularly like Aziza because it has a random meaning, except if I’m missing something.

Aziza are woodland fairies (closest European approximation). Telling me that a name in my language, which you presumably don’t speak, has a ‘random meaning’ is a bit odd.

The rest of your comment was helpful. Thank you.

Apologies, my bad. I was trying to find a meaning in a language I speak and completely missed the point.

timoteigirl · 17/01/2025 11:30

Aziza makes me think of beloved, deserts, flows from the tongue name
Izuka I would have guessed this to be a boys' name because of the harsher -Ka sound, to me like Hakim
Iruka - same as for the above
Zikora - makes me think of Sikora in Polish - I think it's a bird

SouthernFashionista · 17/01/2025 11:36

They sound like car brands. Perhaps not the vibe you are looking for?

I don't like any of them. They all sound harsh.

Thank you, but I do not want - nor have I asked for - random name suggestions.

I can very much picture the ad for ’The Nissan Iruka’, and now can’t stop laughing. 🤣

I could be wrong but these sound like Igbo names to me rather than Arabic.

Phannyphart · 17/01/2025 11:56

These are all awful sounding in my dialect (northern) sorry OP.
which part of the country are you in?

Changingname1988 · 17/01/2025 11:57

I really like Iruka, I used to work a lot in the Basque Country and something about it reminds me of the strong powerful names for girls there.

The only negative is kids are often little shits and I can sadly see potential for “Iruka verruca” teasing depending on the school environment.

Most of them are Igbo (I’m Igbo, DH isn’t). Well spotted! I’m impressed! 😁

Aziza, probably biased due to lovely friend with that name.

South East England.

Probably will sound a lot nicer then, ha! Our accent is rather harsh sounding 😂
I like Aziza the best.

AnnaBegins · 17/01/2025 12:06

I have a Malaysian friend called Azizah, and haven't noticed any major mispronunciations of her name. Zikora also gorgeous.

wandawaves · 17/01/2025 12:14

I like all of them!
Nice sounds, fairly easy to pronounce (i guessed them all correctly), fairly easy spelling to remember once you've seen it written.

My favourites are Aziza and Zikora. Very pretty.

I have never heard a northern accent that I didn’t like!

Aziza (and Zizi) is lovely and my favourite but, as a PP pointed out, it is also an Arabic name and it’s also a (biblical) Jewish name. The meaning is lovely - beloved, strong, respected. It could be an advantage having a name that is quite well known in the UK (or maybe not considering the replies on this thread..) as it is used by several different cultures and religions so people know how to pronounce and spell it or it could be annoying if you wanted a name that is specifically associated with your culture and/or its meaning in Igbo.

FWIW, when I saw the thread, I was familiar with the names Aziza and Iruka and when you said your DD had a multicultural heritage, I was thinking Japanese and Jewish or Arabic at first.

I speak some passable Igbo! And I thought Aziza might mean “broom” was why I thought it was random compared to the other 3 😃. Totally forgot there are a few hundred thousand languages out there.

There's a Jewish name Aviva, I've never heard of a Jewish Aziza. Are you thinking of Aviva? Which is lovely apart from the insurance giant!

There's also Zipporah which is a little like Zikora.

Anyway I've already commented but again, I like all the names. Zikora might be my favourite actually.

KnickerFolder · 17/01/2025 16:42

No, I am not thinking of Aviva, @Oceangrey. I am thinking of my Jewish friend, Aziza 😂

Oceangrey · 17/01/2025 17:34

Ok sure, I'd just never heard it amongst the hundreds of Jews I know, and Wikipedia just mentioned people with Arabic surnames when I did a quick search. There's an Azazel in the bible so I assume it comes from the same root as that.

miniaturepixieonacid · 17/01/2025 20:11

Oh, I LOVE Zikora. It's so pretty. Never heard it before. I'm definitely a fan of Z names. They're all lovely though, I don't think you can go wrong.

I hope you manage to hold your ground on not westernising the names. I teach in a relatively multicultural school and so many of the children's names are altered almost out of recognition by their friends. Over the years, I've had:
Chinazor - Nazzy
Karizma - Krig
Muqaddas - Muck
Chizara - Zara
Olulatoni - Tony
Korede - Cory
Koseunti - Kosh
Samika - Sam
Fabrizio - Riz (probably wouldn't happen in the current brainrot era!)
Tehilla - Leela
Shorter names and names with an obivous shortening that fits the name properly seem to fare better though. I think your choices would have a good chance of surviving in tact.
