They’re girls’ names. What’s your immediate reaction to each of them, please?

They're all meaningful and from our cultures, but - putting that aside - I’m looking for immediate reactions/first impressions.

Thank you!

I know a Zikora, but she often goes by Zizi. I think it would be easy to avoid the shortening, though, at least until your daughter can make up her own mind. I think Z is a fun initial, I think it's easy to pronounce and I like the one I know - so that would be my pick!

How funny! I just posted about ‘Zizi’! 😁

I do really like Zikora.

My first reactions:
Aziza is my favourite. Iruka seems to have a harsher sound and I don't like it as much as the others. Izuka and Zikora seem nice too.
I pronounce them AZ-ee-za, eye-RU-ka, IZ-oo-ka, and ZIK-or-a when reading then in my head.

I don't know any of them but I like them all. Preference probably the same as this poster, although I would have assumed I as in Iridescent as you said.
Lovely options.

beAsensible1 · 16/01/2025 14:11

I love aziza and iruka

Ihopeyouhavent · 16/01/2025 14:13

Awful. Setting your kid up for a life of repeating and spelling it all the time.

I grew up in England, as did my husband. I can honestly say I don’t know anyone under the age of about 30 who does this/is fine with it. Whilst it was definitely something older generations did to assimilate, we’re more about celebrating cultural differences (including names) at this point. Which is a good thing, imo.

But, thank you.

Same OP

i know many people with non western names who don’t shorten and don’t allow others to shorten them either.

they all manage fine

Hollietree · 16/01/2025 14:16

Izuka and Iruka instantly made me think of verruca when I read them.

Aziza is a nice sounding name, that’s my favourite of the four.

Awful. Setting your kid up for a life of repeating and spelling it all the time.

People from non white British backgrounds often have to spell our (first and last) names. Are they all ‘awful’? Should we get rid of cultural names altogether? 🤣

I didn’t think I needed to say this in the OP, but if you’re a bigot, I do not want your opinion.

Unfortunately they sound like brand names for pharmaceuticals.

Same, sorry. Or some sort of ointment. But I think it's just because they're written down like this, I don't think I'd make the association if someone foreign introduced themselves to me with any of these names. If I had to pick I'd go with the last one though; as previously pointed out, the middle two sound too much like verucca and the first like Aviva. Wouldn't have any problems pronouncing or spelling any of them though.

I like Zikora. Her nickname could be "Cora" which can be pronounced easily by many here in the west.

PMSL at the idea that us poor Westerners would have trouble pronouncing Zikora but don’t think twice about Francesca, Elizabeth or Alexandra.

They are all lovely OP. Hadn’t heard Zikora before today and really like it. I suppose someone might wonder if the stress goes on the Zi or the Kora (ZI-kora or Zi-KORA).

Yeah I agree, or something a car manufacturer would come with.

Zizi (zeezy) would traditionally be how both Aziza and Zikora would be shortened. I think it’s cute.

What I meant was, it's not western sounding in the same way that Cora for Zikora would be.

user2848502016 · 16/01/2025 14:30

A lot of people won't have heard the names before in the UK but none of them are hard to pronounce.
Iruka is my favourite I think. Izuka reminds me of Isaac so people might think it was a boy's name.
Zikora I don't like as much. Aziza is nice.

JC03745 · 16/01/2025 14:30

If I'm honest, on reading the list, I expected to also see Azaria- the baby dragged from a tent and eaten by a dingo.
I then thought of Zoflora, then Zika.
I have a friend named Ilona which I really like, but clearly may not be from your country.

TinyTear · 16/01/2025 14:39

Iruka is a Naruto character

I like Ikura as she is a singer I like... but then realised you said Iruka :-D

TinyTear · 16/01/2025 14:40

Why has my reply been hidden?

All I said is Iruka is a Naruto character and I first read it as Ikura, who is a singer I like...

TinyTear · 16/01/2025 14:41

Have you thought of Azita?

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 16/01/2025 14:41

MagpiePi · 16/01/2025 14:08

Izuka - bazooka
Zikora is giving me Zoflora vibes, or reminds me of Zika virus

I would pronounce Izuka and Iruka with an 'ih' sound, as in iridescent

This...

Oh, I got you. I wasn’t disagreeing. Sorry if that was unclear!

I have a super common name - think Claire or Katherine - and have to spell it almost every day.

I have no idea why that was hidden. Very odd!

Azita, while a perfectly nice name, doesn’t mean anything in my language. You definitely get the vibe we’re going for, though.

That’s perfectly fine. If that’s your initial reaction, it’s good to know!

Seems the auto filter doesn't like the word N A R U T O

Anyway Iruka is my favourite of your options.

mathanxiety · 16/01/2025 14:49

Izuka and Iruka sound like bazooka and verruca.

The other two are nice, no unpleasant associations with the sounds.
