Casper/Jasper/something else

Thoughts on Casper/Jasper?
What do they evoke?
Would like something kind of fancy sounding (other child's name is mildly aristocratic - miss me with the judgement, they're just the sort of names we like/have in the family)
Also, I know Casper reminds everyone of the ghost, but I don't really see that as a big deal 🤷‍♀️

Wonder if both names are just a bit too common now, seem to be quite a few Jaspers around anyway.

Would love your thoughts, or alternative ideas.

Thanks! :-)

I like Caspar best but both are nice. Also like Felix, Otto, Rollo and Tristan for a similar vibe.

ShmackAttack · 14/01/2025 17:27

I have a very unposh 12 year old Jasper and it suits him and I still love the name, he and his name are my favourite

creamcheeseandlox · 14/01/2025 17:42

I have a Casper, 13yr old. No one comments on the ghost thing. It's a film from the 90's so only middle aged people comment if at all. I love his name, don't meet many boys called Casper at all. The A spelling is more on the continent I think.

creamcheeseandlox · 14/01/2025 17:44

Btw...the name derives from the bible, one of the three wise men so means treasurer (gold).

Casper is the most popular spelling in England and Wales by a fair way (spellings and rankings are Casper 193, Kacper 69, Kasper 67, Caspar 66, Kaspar 7). Both Casper and Caspar are probably derived from the Hebrew גִּזְבָּר or gizbar, so neither are the ‘original’ spelling and both variants are acceptable in English.

As I said the er spelling only popularised in the UK since the film & is thus associated with it.

To follow up your wiki quote, more info here:

The form "Gizbar" appears in the Hebrew version of the Old Testament Book of Ezra (1:8). In fact, the modern Hebrew word for "treasurer" is still "Gizbar".[10] By the 1st century B.C., the Septuagint gave a Greek translation of "Gizbar" in Ezra 1:8 as "γασβαρηνου" ("Gasbarinou", literally son of "Gasbar"). [11]The transition from "Gizbar" to "Caspar" and "Kaspar" can thus be summarized as: Gizbar > Gasbar > Gaspar > Caspar > Kaspar (with "C" being a misreading of the manuscript "G" and "K" having the same phonetic value as "C”. Another derivation proposed by Gutschmid (1864) could be the corruption of the Iranic name "Gondophares".[12] [13]

Since we are talking about the naming of a baby not even born yet, I think it's far more relevant to look at the current most popular and well known spelling.

You said that people in the UK would all spell it 'Caspar' rather than 'Casper' and that's simply not the case.

shoopshoopdedoo · 14/01/2025 20:16

I’m the odd one out on MN, but I think Jasper is my least favourite boys name. I’m not super keen on Casper but I much prefer it to Jasper.

I prefer the suggestions of Felix, Rollo, Hugo and Miles.

Because that’s how it has always been spelt and the er is recent development. Depends what OP wants - if she wants to distance herself from the film she might prefer the ar version.

I’m not personally interested in popular spellings - there’s a trend for Louis to be spelt Louie - Lily and Ruby - Lillie and Rubie. If you want to follow the crowd that’s up to you.

TempsPerdu · 14/01/2025 20:52

I prefer Caspar (with this spelling) - it feels stronger to me, probably because of the hard C and the the king connection. Cass makes a good nickname I think.

Greeneyegirl · 14/01/2025 21:20

I prefer Caspar and it's on our list. Id also only spell it Caspar. Casper feels very Americanised and bit made up

Hm, worried he'll be having to spell his name out all the time as there seem to be so many variations. Jasper seeming a lot better right now!

It bears mentioning Jasper is also a popular name for pets. That put me off it. I'm not keen on either one but they're both in circulation enough no one would raise an eyebrow.

Hardly 'following the crowd' to go with a more conventional spelling is it

The film Casper the ghost was released in 1995 - 30 years ago - so not particularly recent.

Personally, I don't have a preference for either spelling and it's not a name I would choose anyway. My point was only that most people (UK and elsewhere) would consider the 'er' ending of the name the more recognisable.

AndThereSheGoes · 14/01/2025 22:04

Jasper is a wasp.
I only know one and is wasn't a nice kid. I know a lovely Caspar.
I think Miles, Max or Laurence are good.

Miles is a gorgeous name.
Adding it to the list!

Are you still going on. Given the age of the name, 30 years is nothing.

Currently popular is not the same as “conventional” no, just as Louie is not the conventional spelling of Louis.

Mirabai · 14/01/2025 22:19

Anyway - I prefer Jasper.

The only one 'going on' here is you. Seriously, what is your problem? You seem obsessed.

That's wonderful that you prefer certain spellings of different names, I'm delighted for you.

Supermutt · 14/01/2025 23:50

Minor point, but if you call him Casper and he ever learnt Spanish or worked in a Spanish speaking environment, he would discover that his name sounds identical to the Spanish word for dandruff!
