Italian baby girl name

My mum is Italian but I was born in England, I have just found out me and my partner are having a baby girl and want to keep tradition by calling her an Italian name, but the issue is the Italian names are so old fashioned and they just don’t have the same ring to them in English. I really like the name Gia, pronounced Gee-ah but this is not used in Italy and the full name is Gianna pronounced Ja-nah… I’m so stuck, any help on Italian names that don’t sound so old fashioned in English and still sound really pretty. Please help!!!

Giavanna is one of my favourite names x

My personal favourite is Allegra but I don't know if that's very modern.

Lara
Adriana
Gisela/Gisella
Mia
Rosa
Serena
Stella
Sylvia

I personally wouldn't go with Gia unless it was a nickname for something longer (eg Luigia).

I love Marina or Mariella

I think Gia and Gianna are beautiful names, and not old fashioned at all. Lots of Lucia being recommended which I also love too!

It's usually spelt Giovanna.

The problem is that Gia isn't pronounced Gee-ah in Italian. It's much shorter, like Jah with the j like in jump. Gia and Gio names are always mispronounced in English which would really annoy me. How about Gaia? This was on my list.

Emanwenym · 14/01/2025 15:48

It's not Jee-ah or Ja, The i is almost imperceptible. Comparing it to the j sound in jump is pretty close.

Gia to rhyme with Mia isn't Italian, it's an anglicisation.

There is also Giada (Jade).

I was going to suggest Giada too. Pronounced (sort of) as Ji-ahda, but with the almost imperceptible ‘i’. Pronouncing it might be an issue at first, but then you get to use Gia if you want. Problem is that ‘gia’ in Italian (pronounced in the correct manner) means ‘already/exactly’. Gia isn’t really an Italian name at all.

Anna Maria is lovely if you are going for Maria as a middle name
