What does the name Alfie make you think of?

I think its a classic boys name and its one of my current favourites. My husband says he just thinks of Alfie Moon from Eastenders and thinks its a bit of a common name for that reason. I've never watched Eastenders so don't have these connotations! Will everyone else?

It's going to date badly...!

NewGreenDuck · 08/01/2025 15:14

Horrible name, and a film about a horrible person.

Freeasabird76 · 08/01/2025 15:15

Alfie moon or my friends dog.Nothing wrong with the name though. Its going to mean different things to different people, what is important is what it means to you.

Whoarethoseguys · 08/01/2025 15:16

I think of the film Alfie , starring Michael Caine

Kaminari · 08/01/2025 15:16

I see it as a naughty name too, but that's only because the only 2 Alfie's I know are little shites.

Otherwise I think it's a nice name to the ear.

Darkflames · 08/01/2025 15:17

Schnauzer or cockapoo - along with Archie its a popular dogs name.

LindorDoubleChoc · 08/01/2025 15:17

The Michael Caine film. Alfie was awful.

It's unfortunate really as it's my bff's son's name and I just cannot like it.

Sunnyflow · 08/01/2025 15:17

what is important is what it means to you.

But the op wants to know what it means to others! Hence this thread.

Niche, but Becoming More Like Alfie by the Divine Comedy. I’ve got it stuck in my head now.

Me too! Was coming to post this but saw you'd mentioned it already!

WoppingBigBackside · 08/01/2025 15:28

Cilla Black It's a classic tearaway name.

Pallisers · 08/01/2025 15:41

I think of Shirley Hughes. I don't think of it as an adult, stand-alone name (feel the same about Archie) which is odd as I know a few older adults who were probably christened Alfred but have never been known as anything other than Alfie.

I've never met an Alfie who could behave. Sorry just reminds me of naughty boys

Dog

ItGhoul · 08/01/2025 15:48

It makes me think of the film starring Michael Caine (spoiler alert: that Alfie is really not a nice man).

It's a really popular name though, so I'm sure most people don't think of any famous Alfies at all. One of my next door neighbours' kids is called Alfie.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/01/2025 15:49

Michael Caine

RuthW · 08/01/2025 15:49

I can't think of a polite way to say what Alfie makes me think of, but Alfred is nice.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 08/01/2025 15:51

Shirley Hughes.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 08/01/2025 15:52

Just for balance, I know a couple of really lovely Alfie’s

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/01/2025 15:53

I know three Alfie's. All really good kids. It's a lovely name.

Mercury2702 · 08/01/2025 15:53

The lily allen song about her brother who just sits in his bedroom smoking weed 😂

Sprogonthetyne · 08/01/2025 15:58

Sorry but to me it will always be a dog or cats name.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 08/01/2025 15:58

Alfie and Annie Rose. (Interestingly, at the time the books were written those were very, very old-fashioned and non-typical names, although the characters were supposed to be sort of everychildren).

I admit to not thinking it's a great name for an adult - it's a bit twee. But in 10 years or so it'll be normal to hear it on adults.

LadyQuackBeth · 08/01/2025 16:00

Cavapoos, cockapoos, possibly a Labrador...

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 08/01/2025 12:15

I associate the name with dogs, to be honest. Seems to be a popular dog name.

Yeah dogs
