Please can I ask people's opinions on Thor? TIA

I have a nephew Thorfinn but am from Orkney where it's a normal name (there was an Earl of Orkney called Thorfinn the Mighty) and we considered it for DS. Obviously I like it and would like to point out to the Danish poster that in the UK we say Thor not Tor and since it has been used in Scotland as long as it has been used in Denmark both pronounciations are equally valid.

MN are funny about norse names and seems to think that because they haven't been used in the SE historically that means they haven't been used anywhere in the UK when actually they are in places with a norse heritage.

Friends son is called Torben which I believe originates from Thor. I quite like both

menopausalmare · 05/01/2025 21:13

A Danish friend named her son Thor. It wouldn't work in the UK but sounded fine with her nationality.

MissysMeemaw · 05/01/2025 21:13

I absolutely LOVE it, and it was on our list if we had a second boy, but with the longer Thorbjorn (Thunder Bear) to give him options, plus soften the full on Thor superhero vibe. My son was born before the MCU took off, and having watched them now, I am glad I would have gone for a longer version to sound less MCU if he didn't want to be just Thor.

OP wants to name the baby after a comic book though, it’s nothing to do with Norse heritage.

Catsinpartyhats · 05/01/2025 21:14

Love it. Was also on my list.

colinthedogfromaccounts · 05/01/2025 21:17

In my opinion it's a name for a pet. Would not consider it, but if you are happy with it, go ahead. Be prepared for raised eyebrows and potentially teasing.

X-posted with my Thorbjorn post. Torben would be a great compromise for you OP, if you felt Thor was a bit too strong.

Mumof1andacat · 05/01/2025 21:19

I like Torben

Blatantlybeyondhelp · 05/01/2025 21:19

Thor the God of Thunder
Went riding on his Philly.
"I'm Thor", he cried
The horse replied
"You've forgotten your thaddle, thilly"

HolidayBrochure · 05/01/2025 21:22

Ah here. No, just no.

Maddy70 · 05/01/2025 21:22

Just no

Blatantlybeyondhelp · 05/01/2025 21:24

As an aside, the only Thor, British born, that I know is an aggressive rabid antivacc, conspiracy theory tin foil nutter that is welcome to his view point if he would but keep it to himself.

Suimai · 05/01/2025 21:24

ToKittyornottoKitty · 05/01/2025 21:08

Yeah literally nobody has said that. And some of the names on this board are just daft but people on here love them. But Thor is more of a pet name if you are British, especially when naming something after a comic book.

She didn’t mean it literally…

Frequency · 05/01/2025 21:24

You're not serious?

If it is a Marvel-related name you're after I'd give more consideration to names like Tony, Steve, Stephen, Bruce, etc.

Or if Thor is your favourite character maybe go with Chris, after the actor.

AmiablePedant · 05/01/2025 21:24

Would you call your child Mars? Forget the Marvel stuff, you're naming him after a god of War. A bit creepy.

VeryQuaintIrene · 05/01/2025 21:27

How will it go with your surname? Thor Smith (Thmith?) sounds a bit odd to me. I really wouldn't.

KirstieKaren · 05/01/2025 20:58

No Scandinavian heritage. Hubby loves Marvel and yes would pronounce 'Thor' with the T H

Please no, poor kid how embarrassing, it will be fine up until he's 6, then he will be teased. A nickname possibly but at least at school and employment and even in love he can be something much more normal. Tell your husband to change his own name by deed poll and then imagine telling everyone at work 🤣.

Thunder bear is great.

It’s a fun name, he could grow up with a great personality with that name. I’d go for it.

fourelementary · 05/01/2025 21:32

Oh please.

Your child will be the weedy, stick-thin wimp with glasses. Eternally having the piss taken out of him for being called Thor.

Would you call your kid Einstein?

🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes this is the bane. Thunder bear. Hadn’t realised it was Thorbjorn. They spell it torben and call him torbs for short .

Bobbing46 · 05/01/2025 21:33

Absolutely not. Not for a human baby. A cat or a dog maybe.

He could use super hero's real names but thor is a bit much

Steve Rogers
Tony
Robbie Reyes
Eric Brooks
Stephen

LetThereBeLove · 05/01/2025 21:33

DD1s second name is Thor. His first name in Gethin which is Welsh.

ShadowsOfTheDays · 05/01/2025 21:33

You know what, I like Viking shit. Go for it.
