We have decided to name our boy Rio / Reo
we love it. I like short sweet names

I know the most popular spelling is Rio, but after doing some research I’ve seen people also use Reo which I thought was quite different then the original Rio

thoughts? ☺️

Everyone will spell it Rio and he’ll have to constantly correct people or pre-spell it for them if you go for Reo.

Chamomileteaplease · 31/12/2024 11:54

As above. If you want to have to spell it out every single time you have to give his name and then have little Rio spell it out for the whole of his life, go for it! 🤔

Team Rio.

Reetpetitenot · 31/12/2024 11:55

Rio, definitely

JC03745 · 31/12/2024 11:55

Rio

Otto223 · 31/12/2024 11:58

Thanks ladies. I do prefer Rio, just wanted to hear thoughts on Reo after looking online!

Why not call him the full name after the city Rio do Janeiro?!! Do you have Portugese or Brazilian ancestry?

Reo is a bit chavvy and looks like a spelling mistake for which he'll be forever correcting.

There are better names out there but if you like it then at least spell it correctly.

RedDeadReflection · 31/12/2024 11:59

Different doesn't necessarily mean better. Reo will be correcting the spelling of his name for the rest of his life.

Marchweshall · 31/12/2024 12:00

Use it if you want to have spell his name every single time you use it, and you want your son to have a lifetime of correcting people. My husband has one of these names. It’s frustrating for him.

aldisud · 31/12/2024 12:01

REO Speedwagon fan?

Comedycook · 31/12/2024 12:02

Rio

Otto223 · 31/12/2024 12:02

@Itsallgonesideways Do I need have Portuguese or Brazilian ancestry to use a name ?????!!!!!!!!!????!!
Reo is spelt correctly. Reo is also a name.
I was asking for opinions on spellings from others.

I'd definitely spell it after Rio De Janeiro.

Reo looks wrong. I've seen Leo spelt Lio too, which equally looks wrong.

cariadlet · 31/12/2024 12:37

How about a more traditional name like Ricardo, with Rio as a nick name.

It gives him more options when he's older, especially if he ends up in a career where names like Rio could be seen as a bit chavvy.

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/12/2024 12:59

Rio is lovely - I’d spell it like that.

Chugnut · 31/12/2024 13:01

Will he like dancing on the sand?

Itsallgonesideways · 31/12/2024 13:35

Rio is the Portugese word for river so I'd have thought you'd have links to either Portugal or Brazil otherwise it's cultural appropriation.

BootballJoy · 31/12/2024 13:42

Rio. I like the name. It's increasing in popularity I think.

Resilienceisimportant · 31/12/2024 13:44

aldisud · 31/12/2024 12:01

REO Speedwagon fan?

That was totally my first thought.

Different for the sake of being different isn’t better and I agree it sounds chavvy.

No, it’s the Anglofied version of the Portuguese word ‘Rio’ for river.

Rio de Janeiro
Rio Grande etc

Not Reo de Janeiro.

Resilienceisimportant · 31/12/2024 13:48

Chugnut · 31/12/2024 13:01

And wasn’t it “her name was Rio”.

Her unless I remember wrong?

Bit of an overreaction to a simple question OP!!! 🙄
I too assumed you might have connections to Brazil too!

My name is from where my ancestors came from generations ago, so its not uncommon to use a name which has family significance!

Otto223 · 31/12/2024 17:24

@JC03745 It wasn’t an over reaction when someone has been completely been sarcastic for no reason in there comment to my post

i understand, but it is also not uncommon to use a name just because you like it. There was no need for sarcasm when I just asked for opinion on a spelling!

Rio

CrimsonVioletTeal · 31/12/2024 17:31

Rio.

Although Scots of my generation all knew of Sir Reo Stakis, so that looks like a proper spelling to me too. I wouldn't make any assumptions about Rio's heritage, but I'd assume a little Reo had family connections to Cyprus.

Germanjio · 31/12/2024 17:32

Rio. Particularly if you're a bit touchy and might kick off at a misspelling.
