We have decided to name our boy Rio / Reo
we love it. I like short sweet names

I know the most popular spelling is Rio, but after doing some research I’ve seen people also use Reo which I thought was quite different then the original Rio

thoughts? ☺️

Rico

Zoomo · 31/12/2024 17:34

Rio not Rico!

yorktown · 31/12/2024 17:42

I know a Reo, it's pronounced Rayo, which I think would be more Spanish.

I'd go Rio if you want an easy life with spelling and pronunciation.

Needmorelego · 31/12/2024 17:47

@Itsallgonesideways I know several boys/men called Rio and none have Portuguese or Brazilian links.
Rio has been a popular name for years now.
@Otto223 ignore the "it's chavvy" comments. It's a perfectly normal name (but definitely go for Rio not Reo) 🙂

maddiemookins16mum · 31/12/2024 17:53

If you ever have to ask a question on how to spell or pronounce a name you're thinking of using for your wain (or how others might do so), then my advise is to stay well away from that name.

Jolietta · 31/12/2024 18:05

Rio unless your surname is Grande.

cariadlet · 31/12/2024 12:37

How about a more traditional name like Ricardo, with Rio as a nick name.

It gives him more options when he's older, especially if he ends up in a career where names like Rio could be seen as a bit chavvy.

I think this is a good idea

I know you like Rio OP, but it’s a strong flavour so an option might be good.

Itsallgonesideways · 31/12/2024 11:58

Why not call him the full name after the city Rio do Janeiro?!! Do you have Portugese or Brazilian ancestry?

Reo is a bit chavvy and looks like a spelling mistake for which he'll be forever correcting.

There are better names out there but if you like it then at least spell it correctly.

That's not 'the full name'.

Rio means river. It's what every river in every Spanish speaking country is called. Rio Grande (in formerly Mexican region of the US), Rio Plata, Rio Parana, Rio Magdalena, and thousands more.

It’s not a typical name - all good if the OP likes it, but to a lot of people it falls into the Jayden and Nevaeh camp, which people can make assumptions about (not to say they should, but they do). For this reason it’s reasonable to suggest that using a more established name on the birth cert would give young Rio more options.

Snorlaxo · 31/12/2024 18:20

Reo looks like a misspellIng of Leo or that it should be pronounced Ray-o (rhymes with Mayo)

SnoopySantaPaws · 31/12/2024 18:27

It's not a name I'd choose, but Rio rather than Reo for sure!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 31/12/2024 18:32

Is your surname Speedwagon? Shit I’m old!

Gem359 · 31/12/2024 18:41

Rio means river. Reo pronounced Ray-o means criminal. I know which one I'd use!
Everyone will just assume he's named after Ferdinand I expect.

Will he like dancing on the sand?

🤣

Iloveyoubut · 31/12/2024 19:38

I LOVE the name Rio and I’d spell it that way as Reo feels like it’s a skincare device to me! Great choice btw. X

creamsnugjumper · 31/12/2024 19:40

Love Rio what a fab name.. I even picture him being dark haired and olive skinned.

Calm down Katie Hopkins.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 31/12/2024 19:43

I have a name that can be spelt a few ways and my parents gave me the least known spelling. Drives me up the wall that no one spells it correctly. Even work colleagues I've worked with for years still get it wrong from time to time. When they are rushing is usually when they get it wrong

Well I doubt she would do that because that would be ridiculous.

MostHighlyFlavoredGravy · 31/12/2024 19:44

Rio. If you use Reo he will spend his life saying either "no it's actually spelt Reo" or "it's pronounced like Rio, not Rayo".

Pumpkincozynights · 31/12/2024 19:47

Rio definitely.

MissAnthr0pe · 31/12/2024 19:51

Reo looks better written down, but I reckon people will pronounce it either Réo or Rèo (accents are French)

BoTimic · 31/12/2024 20:20

Either are nice but I'd go for Rio. People on Mumsnet freak out about names but in normal life people get used to all sorts of names very quickly.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/12/2024 21:32

Rio. Why choose a spelling that would make his life more tricky? Imo the vast majority of people would assume he’s named after the city (or possibly the footballer).

user1492757084 · 31/12/2024 23:30

Rio sounds strong. River is a great meaning.
