Darryl? Is this a wind up?

ninedragons · 04/05/2008 04:35

Love Timothy but not keen on Darryl. Suggests to me men in their fifties with hairy ears and red noses from years of slightly too much booze.

Do you have any Irish blood? I went to university with an Irish Darragh, which is much more stylish IMHO.

Nancy66 · 04/05/2008 10:11

Don't like Darryl - it's effectively the same as Darren, a 60s/70s council estate name.

Not mad on Timothy either, always think of it as a 'weak' name.

Don't like Darryl at all, sorry.

wheresthehamster · 04/05/2008 10:28

God no. For some reason it reminds me of Ian Beale in Eastenders.

HereComeTheGirls · 04/05/2008 10:31

It totally reminds me of Darryl Hannah and therefore sounds like a girl's name...

pootleflump · 04/05/2008 10:47

No. I think Darryl is a girl's name and Daryl is boy's name. Don't like either.

lollyheart · 04/05/2008 11:42

well my brothers name is Darryl (spelt this way) and he is the least feminine wet boy i know! I wouldnt choose this name but as far as what it reminds people of is neither here or there. At the end of the day if you call your son Darryl - people will assocaite the name Darryl to your son,as ooposed to say ' Darryl hannah - it doesnt mean hes going to be wet, girly, wimpy etc. if you like it you should go for it.
I did a baby name thread on here for my chosen name of olivia mainly cuz my mum hates the name and thinks that Livvy (what i would shorten it to is Chavvy) i wish id never told anyone my choice of name now until she is born. originally i never asked for anyones opinion as me and dh loved then name, when asked what names we replied Olivia to lots of different responses. the bad responses are what prompted me to start a thread. The thread bought good news about the name Olivia ut i soon found that people commented on the choice of middle name - mae which wasnt up for debate. However im sticking with it as we love it and really it doesnt matter what others think, its what you think that really matters. youll never please everyone!xx

Chocolateteapot · 04/05/2008 11:58

I do think you should ignore everyone else and go for what you like. However, my Grandad was called Darrell (I think that's how it was written) and people used to come in and say "Alreeet our Darrrrr" (lived in Bristol) so it has put me off the name somewhat.

HereComeTheGirls · 04/05/2008 11:59

She asked for people's opinions, and people were just honest, including myself.

Just because they weren't all favourable doesn't mean she should just ignore them, if she didn't care what everyone else thought then she wouldn't have posted a question asking for people's opinions.

And I don't know why you were upset if people didn't all respond that they loved the name you chose, if you had posted a thread asking for peoples opinions. No offence meant but why do people ask for opinions then get upset if they aren't what they want to hear??

HereComeTheGirls · 04/05/2008 11:59

and that was to Kezza...

pointydog · 04/05/2008 12:04

lol @ lolly's recent post. I feel disappointed for you now!

It is easier to find a name you like and not tell anyone. Better not to get others' opinions.

Lilymaid · 04/05/2008 12:08

LOve Timothy - it is DS2's name though he (rugby playing football fanatic) does think it is perceived as being a bit weak - nice but dim etc. Don't like Darryl, but I'm a snob.

Kezza7779 · 04/05/2008 12:17

no i didnt mean just ignore them i meant after reading the thread if she still loved the name that she should go for it regardless. i think we all start threads in the hope that everyone will love our chosen name and then are disapointed when people dont. I had amazingly good responses about my chosen name - i didnt say i was upset about that - i just said that the middle name (which wasnt what i started the thread on had worse responses and i never asked for an opinion on that name so it was staying)!

Kezza7779 · 04/05/2008 12:18

o and i was being honest when i said i wouldnt use it myself!

Tofino2K3 · 02/10/2024 22:12

When my two boys were small, they had some toy crash dummy figures. They all had names printed on them and the only one I can remember was DARRYL... it struck me as an unusual choice. He may even still be in the attic somewhere.

GoldenLegend · 03/10/2024 20:30

I used to know a Darryl and he was a bit of a trial whereas Timothy is lovely.

Aspecialplaceinhell · 04/10/2024 20:56

Suspect little Darryl is now 6ft4 rugby player starting his Alevels.
How was this reopened 😆

Frith2013 · 04/10/2024 22:23

Is it 1973 ?

RogueFemale · 05/10/2024 02:23

A big no to both Darryl and Timothy.
