Baby Names Opinions - Levina, Liora & Emmeline for a girl, Remus for a boy.

Hello all,

I am 17 weeks pregnant, unsure of the gender yet but will hopefully find out next month. We have chosen Remus for a baby boy, my partner loves the name as do I. His family & my family also adore it. What do you all think to it? + for a baby girl, we all love: Levina, Liora and Emmeline. We keep changing our minds with the girl name, can’t make a decision. I know we still have a lot of time, but I think hearing other peoples thoughts would be a big help. Honest answer are much appreciated, which do you prefer and why? + which don’t you like and why?

Ellie.

Levina sounds madey uppey and a bit boring.

Liora sounds a bit madey uppey too, and bland.

Emmeline is very nice.

I knew a chocolate lab named Remus - a lovely, friendly, goofy animal. There's nothing wrong with it as a name for a child.

Levina isn't a made up name. My great great grandmother was Levena. I think it looks better with an e.

Sorry OP, don’t like any of these.

Your child will be unique and special whether it is a Jane or a Tallulah, because it’s your child! Don’t worry about it being unusual or uncommon and just pick a name you like the sound of, AND that doesn’t have negative connotations or a silly spelling.

We both like for a boy Heath & Elio.
For a girl: Runa & Enya.

I like Elio but in the UK it will be widely mispronounced as 'eelio'. Worth considering if this is likely to bother you.

localnotail · 03/01/2025 15:35

Elio sounds like Olio - app for getting free food ))

localnotail · 03/01/2025 15:36

If I knew someone called Heath I would always think of Hamstead Heath (wink wink)

Enya is lovely.

Screenburn · 03/01/2025 17:09

I’d avoid Elio unless you’ve an Italian family connection - there’s a Disney Pixar movie coming out this year called Elio, so it’d be like calling your kid Moana the year the film came out - people will assume you’ve named the child after that.

I think Enya is a English misspelling of Eithne,
so I’d avoid that too - it’ll forever be associated with the slightly loopy singer (whose real name is Eithne - she was told to change the spelling of her name so that her music would sell).

Heath is nice. Runa is okay but a bit of a odd choice if you’re not Norwegian or Arabic, and will definitely get misheard as Luna.

Remus is a weird name, especially if you have an ordinary English surname. Not everyone is into Harry Potter - I'm not, never read it/ watched the films - and to me its a name of the founder of Rome who got killed by his twin. It also sounds like "rebus" - a type of puzzle. Kind of clunky sounding.

I'm willing to bet that far more people these days (in the UK at least) would be familiar with the Remus from Harry Potter than with Romulus and Remus. Whether you personally are into Harry Potter is totally irrelevant. I quite like Remus. In any case, it would hardly be unique in being a name with ties to a historical or legendary character who killed someone!

SardinesOnGingerbread · 03/01/2025 17:40

Ten Elio's a penny near me.

MinistryofMom · 03/01/2025 17:46

As a child of a mum with a similar name (think Kat and Kit type thing) just be aware that Ellie and Elias or Ellie and Emmy could be a mild and regular annoyance for everyone else.

I'm now a Mom with a Tom so I didn't heed my own advice 😂

'Was that Mom or Tom?!' X10 daily

I love the name Leonora, added that one to my short list.

Leonora is lovely.

Liora is bizarre and "Younique" don't do that to your child.

Levina is a common Russian surname. I work with two.

Himawarigirl · 03/01/2025 17:52

I associate Remus with Harry Potter but wouldn’t think it was odd to use it, I like it and he’s a lovely character. Not keen on the girls names. Could live with Emmeline but sounds a bit frilly. Really don’t like Levina or Liora, sorry.

canyouletthedogoutplease · 03/01/2025 18:06

Remus was abandoned by a river, suckled by a she wolf and was a victim of fraticide via Romulus. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Elio looks like you've forgotten the T, and sounds like a garlic mayonaise dip.

One might find Levina and Liora in the bathroom cabinet.

Emmeline is nice.

If they’re not unique, then unusual/uncommon. I don’t like names over used such as: Beth, Bradley, Danny, Sophie, Jack, Jessica, Katie, Lauren, Lewis + Amy for example. I have also noticed a lot of people calling their children names like: Mason, Noah, Phoebe and Ava. Wouldn’t want to call my son/daughter something everyone else is calling theirs, don’t mind the odd person but if it’s over used by many it’s a no.

And yet you've chosen a name from a Harry Potter film?

Growlybear83 · 03/01/2025 18:27

Emmeline is quite pretty but the others are dreadful, especially Romulus. Think how he will feel when his name gets called out in class when he gets older - children do still get teased when they have ridiculous names.

HangingStars · 03/01/2025 18:39

Remus is definitely a Harry Potter association, but I’ve not heard of any. I quite like it.

I wouldn’t use Emmeline if you are an Ellie - it’s too similar, I’m not a fan anyway.

Liora is ok, though I also quite like Leonora.

I really don’t like Levina - I wouldn’t be sure how to pronounce it (Lev-ee-na, Le-vin-a?) and it sounds like to tried to use Lavinia but got it wrong!

So because one character in Harry Potter is called Remus, that means it’s common? I don’t know one other person named Remus & I don’t know anyone who has decided to call their baby boy that name. Yes, for that reason it’s an uncommon name that isn’t used by many.

I prefer Enya to Emmeline + I have added the names Heath & Elio to my list for boys.

thank you for sharing your opinion, Levina is scrapped from the list. 🩷

Romulous? I don’t like that name either, I was thinking Remus, Heath or Elio for a boy.

I really like Emmeline. It’s a classic, beautiful name. I wonder if Ellie and Emmy (which you are certain to get) would be confusing though).
Unfortunately the other girl names are anything but classy but what ever floats your boat. How about Clemency or Evangeline?

Remus is cool and I like Elio although he will be constantly having to correct people when they assume that he is an Elliot.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 03/01/2025 18:50

Forgot to add, congratulations!

I guess it depends on your age and level of education! )) but each to their own.

MumonabikeE5 · 03/01/2025 19:17

Lavinia is a great name- Mother of the Roman People. And important in the creation of Rome.

think it sounds like a elegant and poised but strong name.

SemperIdem · 03/01/2025 19:19

I like Enya and Heath.

Remus, whether inspired by Roman mythology or JK Rowling, is not a name that makes one think of happy endings. That sort of thinking hasn’t put people off using Ophelia, true.
