Baby Names Opinions - Levina, Liora & Emmeline for a girl, Remus for a boy.

Hello all,

I am 17 weeks pregnant, unsure of the gender yet but will hopefully find out next month. We have chosen Remus for a baby boy, my partner loves the name as do I. His family & my family also adore it. What do you all think to it? + for a baby girl, we all love: Levina, Liora and Emmeline. We keep changing our minds with the girl name, can’t make a decision. I know we still have a lot of time, but I think hearing other peoples thoughts would be a big help. Honest answer are much appreciated, which do you prefer and why? + which don’t you like and why?

Ellie.

Remus - I don't think I could see past the history of Remus being murdered by his brother.
Seeing as you like Elias too, you may also like:
Silas, Marius, Julius.

Your girls names are nice. You may also like Laurel or Lavinia.

Enya is a very anglicised spelling of an Irish name (Eithne) which I wouldn't use unless you are particularly a fan of the singer.

Iwishiwasagiraffe · 29/12/2024 22:48

I love Emmeline, it’s beautiful.

I don't mind Remus- I would think of Remus Lupin not the founders of Rome

do you like Liana, Eliana, Evangeline, Emilia, Lia?

I also like your suggestion of Elias

FloralMoon · 29/12/2024 22:50

Agree with a pp - my first thought at the name Remus is Professor Lupin from Harry Potter and would assume the parents are big fans.

Emmeline seems a bit fussy but the other two are pretty.

Thank you!
I meant Elio, rather than Elias, as Elio is more unique.

i like Liana & Eliana. X

Elio - nice if pronounced the Italian way
emmeline - lovely
Remus is awful

None of your suggested names are unique. That means a one off. Do you mean unusual?

NewName24 · 29/12/2024 23:19

If you, your partner, his family, and your family all 'adore it' , then use it.
I mean, I don't like it, as it seems so many on this thread don't, but, once you've found a name those who will be using it love, don't go asking strangers on the internet.

OnTheJourneyOnwards · 29/12/2024 23:32

Emmeline is the BEST name. Biased because it's my daughter's name.

It's often misspelled and mispronounced though.

We pronounce it 'Emma-leen' (it's meant to be pronounced), but we often hear people say 'Emma-LIGHN'.

We don't really use nicknames but I liked Emmy as an option for when she's older.

Unfortunately lots of people mishear it as 'Emily' but those that know about Emmeline Pankhurst often get it right.

Emmeline means 'hard working/industrious/academic', which we liked as education is important to us.

It's not that common, but more common in children attending private schooling.

Excuse me? Don’t go doing this, who are you to tell me what to do? If I want to ask people on the internet for their opinion, that’s exactly what I am going to do.

If they’re not unique, then unusual/uncommon. I don’t like names over used such as: Beth, Bradley, Danny, Sophie, Jack, Jessica, Katie, Lauren, Lewis + Amy for example. I have also noticed a lot of people calling their children names like: Mason, Noah, Phoebe and Ava. Wouldn’t want to call my son/daughter something everyone else is calling theirs, don’t mind the odd person but if it’s over used by many it’s a no.

Remus is from Harry Potter & I have added Enya to the list. That’s unique, but a more common version is Anya. X

Enya isn't a version of Anya. It's a phonetic spelling of how Eithne is pronounced in Ulster Irish.

Also, Elias is a biblical name, the Greek version of Elijah (a prophet).

I like your suggestion of Elio. Also like Enya. Not really keen on Anya and it's quite popular.

I don’t know anyone called Remus, but it could grow on me and I like Remy for short.

I like Emmeline best from your girls ideas. Levina and Liora I haven’t heard before and would be a bit of a nuisance to explain / spell out etc I think.

Wasn’t there a Remus in Harry Potter?

Sure but being unique for the sake of it means you are in real danger of having your kid be infinitely teased throughout their childhood. Not nice and not okay but let’s be honest kids aren’t always nice.

As soon as kids watch Harry Potter and learn about the character Remus (who as we remember was a werewolf) that kid is getting teased.

Also, maybe don’t write a list of names you hate because they are too common as it’s kinda insulting to those answering your post with those names.

Maybe think of your kid and then their life with that name and whether they will like it, how it will be perceived, how it looks on a cv and spelling instead of your linear desire to give your kid a unique name just to fulfil that wish.

theduchessofspork · 30/12/2024 02:35

I like Emmeline and Elias

Not keen on the rest - there are just more attractive names out there.

localnotail · 30/12/2024 04:01

Remus is a weird name, especially if you have an ordinary English surname. Not everyone is into Harry Potter - I'm not, never read it/ watched the films - and to me its a name of the founder of Rome who got killed by his twin. It also sounds like "rebus" - a type of puzzle. Kind of clunky sounding.

Charlotte120221 · 30/12/2024 11:50

Not keen on any of those sorry….

Anoisagusaris · 30/12/2024 11:56

Emmeline is beautiful, one of my favourite names.

I didn’t like Enya (can’t stand the singer Enya!!) until a few little girls around here were called it and it’s grown on me.

Remus is awful. As is Elias.

usernother · 30/12/2024 12:18

Emmeline is lovely. Levina and Liora sound like prescription drugs. Remus is ok.

Wow. Snippy or what?

I was actually encouraging you to use the name you all love. Hmm

But then, if you want to ask strangers on the internet, why get so upset when people reply ? Confused

UpMyself · 30/12/2024 16:30

@Elliecritten , Something can't be "more unique". Liana is a jungle plant.
Eliana will be yet another Ellie.

Beth, Bradley, Danny, Jessica, Katie, Lauren, Lewis + Amy aren't currently overused.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 30/12/2024 17:10

Romulus and Remus wouldn't be a great namesake and is a really well known story. People will know this more than Harry Potter.

This has made me smile @Catlord. I think you have overestimated the average person’s classical general knowledge and underestimated the cultural cut-through of Harry Potter - and it gives me no pleasure to say this as my background is in classics! As a general rule in my experience, Roman myths and the corresponding characters are less well known than their Greek forebears.

Emmeline is a nice name although a bit weird if you're Ellie. Don't like the other names.

I think the majority have said that they like Emmeline, but aren’t keen on your other choices.

Ultimately, you will choose based on your and your partner’s preferences.
