If you could rename them what would you call your older children?

DD is a teen now, she has a long feminine _belle name which she doesn't feel suits her. She's a rugby playing, academic, and rocks the Dark academia look.

She'd like to be an Iseult / Isolde instead

In hindsight I think Harriet would suit her well.

I like my own name and wouldn't change it it is a classic no-nonsense name.

Now that you know your older children what name would suit them and why?

I love what I chose, but regret slightly I wasn’t slightly more ambitious. However, in those days, you didn’t have the internet, only Naming books, so I think it was harder to gauge what was popular or not.

mathanxiety · 21/12/2024 17:55

The only one I'd rename is DC4. I wish I'd gone with the name I initially liked.

Berga · 21/12/2024 17:58

I would choose something totally different for DD, her name does not suit her in the slightest and she doesn't use it! I was really careful to choose a first and middle name that could be shortened in loads of different ways in case she didn't like her name. It's none of those either 😂

Love all my children's names still, but I wish I'd changed my own. I hate it. Proper 80s fashionable name.

I’m in my fifties and changed my name last year. Wish I’d done it years ago.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/12/2024 18:12

Gave my son a classic and sensible name that is usually abbreviated as they get older -wouldn't change it - suits him

Justleaveitblankthen · 21/12/2024 21:25

My ex vetoed James and Michael. So it would be those.

Foxybyname · 21/12/2024 21:48

It was for this reason that I avoided 'frilly' names eg Belle / Fleur - what happens if they don't grow up to be girly, and 'strong' names - eg Scarlett what happens if they grow up to be an introvert.

I wouldn't change DD's name, it's classic and she suits it. I would change DS's name as I felt I was pushed in to it. I don't think I like the name 😫. I would change it to William, but he'd go by Wills. He likes his name though, so all good.

BilboBlaggin · 21/12/2024 21:59

I've got two DDs. I chose the first one's name and DH chose DD2's name. I still love them as much as when they were chosen and fortunately both girls really suit their names. The girls are chalk and cheese though and if we'd gone the other way round I don't think either would have suited their name - phew!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/12/2024 22:06

My adult DC like their names , there was only one other boy with DS name in Primary ( he left that school) then never another one all through school or University .

They have no middle names which they were a bit Hmm about but only briefly .

My DD name , there were three others in her class .

StScholastica · 21/12/2024 23:11

My adult kids all like their names and wouldn't change them.
They all have typical St names, if I had to rename them I'd choose Dominic, Edward and Elizabeth, but if I was braver, I'd go with Cruz, Rocco and Brigid.

I'm a Susan and I'll swap you! I'd LOVE a super-posh frilly name please! Never felt like Susan or Sue and only marginally happier with Susie. 😂

‘Sooz’ is awful, too!
you might add an ‘a’ and be a Susanna
the difference is huge or a Suzanne
(obvs more Continental and a little racy)

Echobelly · 22/12/2024 08:28

My 16 year old started going by another name a few years back, they identify as non binary and have chosen a fairly classic gender neutral name, which they're probably going up change by deed poll next year. It's actually one I would have chosen for a boy or a girl and suits them much better than the name we gave them (which was one of those nostalgic girly ones) and I think whatever happens with their gender identity in the long run it will and should remain their name

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 22/12/2024 08:35

Frederick and Isadora

Flora and Jasper

Thomas and Emilia

PortiasBiscuit · 22/12/2024 08:37

Morticia and Cruella… now I know their real perdonalities.

VacuumPacked · 22/12/2024 08:55

I’m happy with the classic names we selected
as are the recipients. I was assured of this last time I asked.

Good advice to anyone pregnant is not to run names past anyone, especially your Mother, who will suddenly delve into family history and drag out a miscreant relative bearing said name so blighting the name forever. Not just mums but people can comment without concern.

We can be hormonally incompetent at this time though, sometimes the voice of reason needs to be heard.
Troy?
luckily she was a baby girl given a classic name

ueberlin2030 · 22/12/2024 08:57

I'd still choose the same names tbh.
His first name suits him, is timeless (as opposed to a trend name), and works in several European languages. I still like his middle name too.

Lucyaugust2007 · 22/12/2024 09:04

I wouldn't change any of my 4 children's names.
I still love the names I chose for them, and more importantly, they love them too.

My youngest has one of the most hated names on mumsnet (that 3 letter boys name that every poster screams "chavvy" at whenever it appears on a post).
I did go through a phase of considering changing his name when he was little - not because I didn't like it - but because the negativity was affecting my mental health.
My older 3 children all have traditional old English names, but for my youngest I just fell in love with this name.

I am so glad I didn't change it - I still love his name, he loves his name too and it suits him perfectly.

OneAmplePearlKoala · 22/12/2024 09:07

I love my kids names they suit them well.
I do wish my mum had gone with Scarlet like she wanted to for me though.

MumonabikeE5 · 22/12/2024 09:09

Oreyt · 21/12/2024 08:28

I can never buy my kids anything with their names on other from items made for dogs.

I didn't realise they were very popular dog names.

Smokey and Bruno?

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/12/2024 09:10

One of mine has the middle name Thomas, still don't like it decades later. I do like the name but just not for him, I like names with meaning and the meaning doesn't fit.

LaPalmaLlama · 22/12/2024 09:22

Pregnant me had some very strange ideas which fortunately DH vetoed. Was going to give DS a hyphenated biblical French name- we are not French ( our surname is stereotypically English) or Catholic.i think he would have ended up being known by his initials. However, possibly scarred by this experience DH did also veto my top girls names for the next DC- Harriet and Zoe. I can’t imagine dd being called anything other than her actual name now but she’d have suited either of those.

VacuumPacked · 22/12/2024 09:30

MumonabikeE5 · 22/12/2024 09:09

Smokey and Bruno?

our elderly NDN had an old labrador called Anna
which spoilt our middle name choice, giving a dog a human name isn’t on at all

when I was young dogs were called Rack, Rex, Sultan, Bonnie, Sheba, Trixie, Geddown, you know, proper dog’s names

Bigearringsbigsmile · 22/12/2024 09:32

The names they have
They are their names

I really don't get all the nsme angst people go through
Choose a name you like that won't cause the kids problems
Then stop thinking about it

WinterCarlisle · 22/12/2024 12:33

I chose my eldest’s name about 3 years before I even met his father 😆. Luckily he loved it too. Back then it was super unusual, the veteran midwife said she’d never delivered a baby named it. I still love it but it’s now in the top 5 which annoys me! I would still choose it though. My other too also have names that I still love and seem to suit them well.
