If you could rename them what would you call your older children?

DD is a teen now, she has a long feminine _belle name which she doesn't feel suits her. She's a rugby playing, academic, and rocks the Dark academia look.

She'd like to be an Iseult / Isolde instead

In hindsight I think Harriet would suit her well.

I like my own name and wouldn't change it it is a classic no-nonsense name.

Now that you know your older children what name would suit them and why?

@Mylittlebobble some idiot using the username KingJoffrey (prime Game of Thrones time) published a long list of Mumsnet usernames and their passwords on the internet 'proper', it was a massive data breach and obviously if you use your name in your email it was very easy to link people to their name. As people talk about quite personal things being in DV situations / toxic families it was a big issue.

Elodie and strangely, Jack. Think it's a good solid name

CurlewKate · 21/12/2024 07:55

I still have a faint regret about Constance- but adult Grace is incredibly pleased I was talked out of it! I am still delighted about my son's name 23 years later- it wasn't my favourite but I do like it, and it gave such huge pleasure to the family member he was named for and laid a pretty hefty ghost (yes I know that sounds dramatic but it's true!)

TheWayTheLightFalls · 21/12/2024 08:00

We chose an unusual pronunciation for my eldest’s and I wish we had just chosen another name really, her (short) name gets mangled daily. But then our only other idea was Sofia and there are four Sophia/Sofia’s in every year group at her school, so glad we swerved that.

I wanted to call our middle daughter Hero or Juno but wasn’t sure she’d suit it so went with something more classical. In hindsight it would suit her to a T.

runwithme · 21/12/2024 08:02

Ben, for my eldest. We weren't 'allowed' because SIL's (who we don't see) own SIL (who we don't see) had a son called Ben (who we don't see). It would get too confusing for the PIL, apparently.

Simonjt · 21/12/2024 08:06

We didn’t name ours, our son has a preferred forename that we use due to his legal first name being possibly problematic from a safety point of view. I’m really not sure what we would name either of them, naming pets
is hard enough, nevermind a person.

Runwayqueen · 21/12/2024 08:07

XH named DD (14), both DD and I aren't fans of her name. I wish I'd used Elizabeth, Harriet or Georgia. Ironically DDs friends call her Liz even though it's nowhere near her given name.

Enko · 21/12/2024 08:13

Happy with the names our now adult children have.

Dd2 could have been Millicent our 2nd choice for her. I love he name though.ds is now dating a Milli (seriously dating 3 years in) so I guess it's a good thing we stuck w hers.

Dd1 suits her name so much she was meant to be Elizabeth but that would not have worked for her.

Ds I can't imagine as anything but his name. He is Conrad classic underused in the UK (and Denmark where I am from) yet.everyone knows the name.

Dd3 suits her name our 2nd choice for her was Seraphina and that would have been to frilly for her.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 21/12/2024 08:26

I do still like my kids names, but with a do over would probably use a different name for ds2. He has a name where we use the full version, but everyone else shortens it and he hates that. Think Benjamin/Ben.

modgepodge · 21/12/2024 08:27

I wouldn’t change either of my children’s names, though they are both still young so there’s time for me to change my mind I guess!! both have featured on this thread as ones people wish they’d used 😀😂

I was insistent that my kids would have names with obvious shortenings so they had choice - my name is one syllable with no obvious derivatives and i didn’t like it as a kid (it’s just a bit dull) and I was so jealous growing up that my siblings had names which could be shortened. So we picked names for our kids which have shortenings. One, we use the short version all the time. The other, if anyone tries to shorten it I actually hate it 😂😂😂 I like most of the possibilities but I just think her full name suits her.

Oreyt · 21/12/2024 08:28

I can never buy my kids anything with their names on other from items made for dogs.

I didn't realise they were very popular dog names.

Oreyt · 21/12/2024 08:38

Also weirdly my neighbour 3 doors down neighbour had a dog with dd1 name. Once that died they got another after dd2 was born and used that name too.

Oreyt · 21/12/2024 08:47

Typos 😬

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 21/12/2024 09:03

DH wanted to call our oldest Nechtan after a Pictish king.
I vetoed it and now DS is a James.
Thing is, he's also a massive history buff and tells me that Nechtan is a cool name. Hed love to be called Nechtan.
So if had to name them again- Nechtan it would be.

Oh nooo! My name is occasionally used for dogs and it is irritating. Whatever happened to Shep and the like?!

Youranna · 21/12/2024 09:38

My oldest is Raphael, I don't think it particularly suits him although he gets called Raf/Rafi/Rafa/Rafe which are all better.
Also we now know tons of Raphael's whereas we knew none at the time.
I wish I'd gone for Asher/Ash, Tristan, Ronan or Kieran which were all on the maybe list. Or maybe just Rafe.

Still love my daughter's name, I've never met another one and it gets a lot of complements. It's quite 'girly' but short.

Notellinganyone · 21/12/2024 09:42

I still absolutely love the names of my two eldest children. Classic but not much used. They are 29 and 24 now and like their own names. Youngest has a much more mainstream name - think Freddie/Alfie/Teddy. He likes it but I think it’s a bit boring. I wish I’d gone with Ferdinand.

TizerorFizz · 21/12/2024 13:04

Ours have 3 names each. They have a choice!

StressedQueen · 21/12/2024 14:08

I love all of 5 of my childrens' names still and think they suit them well.

Really, I think I may have gone a bit more adventurous because my older 4 have just about the most basic and popular names you could get. But my youngest is Jasmine which isn't as popular and I love it and think it really suits her as she's quite feminine!

thisoldcity · 21/12/2024 14:26

I wish I'd gone with Imogen as I've always thought it's such a pretty name and a little uncommon. I think I just didn't think of it at the time.

NancyJoan · 21/12/2024 14:35

DD would make a nice Astrid. Or a Margot.
DS I can’t think of anything else that would suit. I had Sebastian and Dominic on my list before he was born, but they would have been a disaster.

They both have the right names for them though, and are old enough to change them if they wish!

I always wished I’d been a Fiona!

laurwalsh · 21/12/2024 14:45

I would go back to traditional as I'm sick of all the nonsense. So Sarah and Patrick (my kids are Hugo and Mila which I do love though)

MoreHairyThanScary · 21/12/2024 16:43

Eldest dd is Emily nn Milly, but I often call her Millicent it's a strong confident name 😃

I wish I'd gone with Imogen as I've always thought it's such a pretty name and a little uncommon. I think I just didn't think of it at the time.

DD was born in 1998. In reception there were 12 girls. Three were called Imogen, three were called Alice. The six sets of parents had thought the names were classic but relatively uncommon Grin

Paradoxically, not an Isabel/isobel in sight.

itsallabitofamystery · 21/12/2024 17:33

I didn't have a name for my daughter and went with a name after several days deciding. But now I wished I'd have named her Esther. My dear Nan lost her mum when she was 5 and it's affected her all her life. She was called Esther. Whilst never replacing her mum, it would have kept her alive a little. I don't know why I didn't think of it at the time, perhaps because the name wasn't popular back in 2012.
