Stressing the you and the subjectivity.

I quite like Nessie but it's unusable anywhere that speaks English. Possibly even beyond 😂

My father and grandfather are called Rudolph and Adolf (obviously not English) but I would say both not usable in England!

leia24 · 14/12/2024 17:43

I love the name Perla but its hideous in my accent

You don't here many Madeleines now (since 2007).

Such a shame as it's a beautiful name. I have an older relative with this name.

Myra

I do actually know of a couple of Myras, roughly the same age as "that" Myra. I don't suppose it was used much after that, but it's a lovely name

Candida
Fleur
Virginia
Fanny (many in France)
Humphrey
Percival
Lancelot
Horatio

Lancelot makes me think of Lance on The Detectorists, and not in a bad way.

I loved Peregrine but too posh for us...and not a fan of Perry.

My mums favourite was always Lettice. I have a feeling I was almost Lettice.

I know two Lettie's, one short for Leticia, who is from Italy and one short for Violet. Suited both of them nicely.

HahaBooHiss · 14/12/2024 17:51

Boys:
Endeavour - LOVE but not sure it’s usable
Maximus/Maximilian - (not posh enough/i volunteer at a dog shelter and there are so many dogs called Max)
Robin - (too many girls that I know called Robin/having girls and naming them Robin/Robyn)

Girls:
Agatha - too old lady?
Enid - too old lady?
Fable - too whimsical?
Pixie - too whimsical?
Pandora - the brand :(
Tuppence - LOVE but saw a thread saying this was the nickname for vagina 😭
Tuesday - See you next Tuesday?
Bluebelle - pet name?

Yes to this! I work in a high school in an extremely deprived area. The few Graces we have in school really don’t live up to their names.

Almost every Gabriel I have met has been an absolute terror.

AuntieHistamine · 14/12/2024 18:02

Any name with a TH sound in. When I was pregnant with my eldest I’d recently moved to South London and quite quickly realised that 2 of my favourite names Theo and Arthur were pronounced Feo and Arfah and quickly took them off my list!

RosesAndHellebores · 14/12/2024 18:05

@hahaboohiss Pandora let the evil out into the world when she opened the box. Aside from that I think it's a nice name!

Tuppence was the price of a prostitute in the 16/17th Century, hence providing a name for for a woman's "modesty".

Bluebell is a pony's name for me.

Marigold - I can't quite get my head around it.

Ophelia - just too tragic.

Alysious - a Teddy bear!

Aglassaday · 14/12/2024 18:09

So so many.
Ozzy, Ziggy, Fox, Blue, Bear, Wolf, Tiger. I love but I just don’t think would suit an adult.
Alpine, Locket, Montgomery, Sullivan- bit too out there I think

Esti/ Este- reminds me of STD😳
Emilia- love but she would forever be Amelia
Matilda- I love but very common where I live
Vesper- love but a bit too out there
Allegra- love but reminds me of algebra(?)
Ottilie- too common where I live
Charlotte- too common where I live too, love with nickname Lottie
Pixie, Bowie, Novie, Sailor, Marigold- can’t imagine on an adult
Margaux- she would forever be Margot but that spelling personally reminds me of maggots and I can’t get past it!

HahaBooHiss · 14/12/2024 18:11

@RosesAndHellebores ahhh I was wondering what Tuppence-vagina link was 😅 learn something new every day!

I feel the same about Ophelia 💔

Melodyfair · 14/12/2024 18:15

Regina, actually had one where I used to work, until one of the girls referred to her as ‘that one with the fanny name!’ Also Fanny!

christmasearly · 14/12/2024 18:32

Isis. Loved it since I was a child and still do but would never use it!

Bunkbedbunk · 14/12/2024 18:38

Both my children's names are on this thread!

sykadelic · 14/12/2024 18:46

Nessie isn't unusable. I know plenty of girls called Vanessa, nn Nessie, Ness, V, Vess, etc

Lostmum1906 · 14/12/2024 19:21

Lavinia

Verity isn’t posh! I put Verity with Donna, Sharon etc
I wouldn’t use it for a baby but not because it’s posh.

That's interesting. It must be area dependent because those names give very different vibes in our part of the country!

They're very different age-wise here too actually. I've never meant anyone in real life called Verity that's over, say, 16. Whereas Donna, Sharon, Tracey, Helen and the like are all in their mid 50s.

TrollTheAncientYuletideCarol · 14/12/2024 19:41

Verity isn’t posh! I put Verity with Donna, Sharon etc I went to school with several Donna's, Sharon's, Tracey's, Helens and so on, There were no Veritys. It's a beautiful, but unusual name.

I'm the era and class of Donna, Sharon and Tracey (and have a similiar name myself). I've never met or heard of anyone called Verity, wouldn't put it in the same bracket at all. I love the name, it's not posh, just feels quite Victorian, certainly not 1970s.

I knew an old lady called Bluebell many years ago, it suited her well. She was quite dainty with silver hair as I recall.

I think I'd have to shorten it to Bella though, it I had it as a name for a child.

I also know a girl called Plum.

I like Bryony, Kezia, Vashti, Liberty, Fuschia, Mirella, Athena, Lavinia, Shiori, Cecily, Keomi, Hepzibah (Eppie), Ebenezer (Ebbie), Isadora, Amyrillis, Fenella & Yarrow, Rosalie.

Dd's bestie is known as "Plum". Her name is Mirabel.

Cute! Like Mirabel, that is lovely. Salzberg has its own Mirabel Garden. Perhaps she should have a date with herself there one day? Its beautiful, unicorns and roses as I remember.
