We are pregnant with a Baby girl, our first child.
We would lile a Name with a beautiful meaning. Should be short. It should be an internstional Name. IÅ¥ should also be solid and traditional.

Middle Name/s will be family Names.

Names we like but CANNOT use are
Amelie, James, Helen, Evelyn, Leonard, Benedict.

We are open to suggestions

Which ones did you choose?

DuchessOfSausage · 15/12/2024 18:21

Do yourself a favour and don't get offended so easily. If you want to name your daughter James or Bennett, people will say 'What a lovely name' to your face but may well be thinking the sort of things we post on here.

Quoting some random baby name site doesn't support a claim that a name is unisex in the UK.

They are unisex in England because they are my nieces Names which were born in southern England in 2023. So yeah it is true.

You had 3 nieces born in 2023 and they were named James, Leonard, and Benedict?

Calliopespa · 15/12/2024 22:35

Yeah I cannot accept Leonard is traditionally a girls name.

Even Benedict and Bennet I find a push ( unless it’s Mrs Bennet by a Pride and Prejudice fan!)

But Leonard!!! Surely it’s Leonora ( just as I reckon it’s Benedicta as in St Benedicta).

I know girls named James, Owen, Bennet, Campbell, Dylan, Merrick, Collins, Ryan, Cameron, Blake, Brett, Jude, Micah, Frankie, Jordan, Elliott, and Tate. I'm not sure I'd consider all of them definitely in the unisex column, but with the trend toward surnamey names, I think lines of demarcation are being blurred to some extent.

UK or US?

I agree there's a difference between stretching the envelope on girls names and names being unisex.

Interesting that traditionally girl names are not being adopted for boys ...

How do you know so many girls with these names?! Must be super regional. I'm mid thirties and had a baby last year and have never heard of any of these on a girl.

It's quite interesting looking at the name stats n England/Wales as well to see if something is genuinely unisex or just one person you know going out on a limb. They record any name with more than 3 births that year, so we can't say zero girls had that name for sure but it's likely.

No ranking for girls in 2023: Bennett, Owen, Merrick, Collins, Brett, James, Campbell, Ryan, Benedict, Leonard
Less than 10: Tate, Jude, Cameron, Micah, Jordan, Elliott, Dylan

The only ones actually registered in any number for girls are Blake, Jordan and Frankie but they're still outnumbered by boy registrations.

Calliopespa · 16/12/2024 09:50

Still reeling from Leonard.

I obviously live in a very conventional bubble. I mean it’s like Stanley or Hamish.

DuchessOfSausage · 16/12/2024 10:38

James, Owen, Bennet, Campbell, Dylan, Merrick, Collins, Ryan, Cameron, Blake, Brett, Jude, Micah, Frankie, Jordan, Elliott, and Tate.
The only ones of those I'd consider unisex are Frankie and Jude, but only if short for Francesca and Judy/Judith.
Collins is 'son of Collin' for a start. How can that be unisex? If you wanted a link to Collin you could use Nicola/Nicole/Coleen/Colette/...

A lot of those Names are surnames and prople tend to give thier girls surnames as first Names.
It seems to be popular in the US.

I was born over 30 years ago and my first Name is also a surname/male Name with Bennett as a middle Name so year it was already allowed in London over 30 years ago

Eve

DuchessOfSausage · 16/12/2024 19:38

Adam and David are surnames too, as are Gordon, Charles, Thomas, Paul, Oliver, Duncan etc

My nephews have normal boy's names, but no doubt they'd be unisex on here

On February 21st we welcomed our daughter Edna Bennett Christine.

Bennett is a version of Benedict and both Bennett and Christine are Family Names.
