I am planning on calling my baby boy
Ash, does anyone else like that name?

No. Ashley is better.

Resilienceisimportant · 11/12/2024 18:22

As in fag end? That kid is in for a lifetime of teasing. I can see it now - where’s the fire Ash?

I would keep the name but only as short for something else - Ashton, Ashley.

Please don’t set up your kid like this. Think of him as. 25 year old applying for a job.

prawncocktailcrispss · 11/12/2024 18:25

If you like it then go for it - I am assuming you are not sure, hence the post - on the plus side it would be easy to spell/

I quite like it, makes me think of an ash tree rather than cigarettes! I know a few girls that go by Ash, (short for Aisling in their case), but think it's also fine for a boy

shoopshoopdedoo · 11/12/2024 20:20

I’m not keen. I just think of burnt things and “fag ash”.

I like Asa, which has a similar feel to me.

Needmorelego · 11/12/2024 20:24

My first thought was like Ash from Pokémon - but that's not a bad thing because I like Pokémon.
I think the name is fine and others have said the younger generation are unlikely to know what an ashtray is or associate the word with fag ash.

PumpkinScarf · 11/12/2024 20:24

It makes me think of Pokemon! Not a bad association though. It’s cute though I prefer a longer name personally so would probably go for Asher. I really dislike Ashley it seems wet and a bit middle aged sounding.

YourWinter · 11/12/2024 20:25

I prefer Asher, and dislike Ashley.

Firsttimebabymummy · 11/12/2024 21:28

Yep
Really like Ashley but Ash is also great on its own

Helpimfalling · 11/12/2024 21:46

I'm so sorry it makes me think of ash trays!!
But I love Ashley x

SirChenjins · 11/12/2024 21:49

It reminds me too much of fags and cremations, so it’s a no from me.

user1492757084 · 11/12/2024 23:46

No, it is a nick name for me, sorry.

Do you like Asher, Ashton, Ashley?

MirandaBlu · 13/12/2024 23:45

I like it, and I'm normally a "use a traditional full name and shorten it for everyday" person. Ash to me is a tree name like Aspen, Hazel, Holly, Laurel, Linden, Rowan, or Willow. I know an Ashley and an Ashten, both women, who go by Ash. I think that both of those "full" names come from surnames and/or place names that have to do with ash trees.

I also like Asher, which is a Hebrew name meaning happy or fortunate/blessed, but it's a different name to me.

Charliecatpaws · 13/12/2024 23:47

I like it

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 13/12/2024 23:55

It's not just burnt things, it's a tree. I think it's a good name and is also unisex. For a longer version I know an Ashley (male) and Ashleigh (female) so it works wherever.

theduchessofspork · 14/12/2024 01:18

Not really.

Ash being what you get when a fire burns out.

MyLadyGreensleeves · 14/12/2024 19:18

It's not unique @Arweni Several people on here have said they know an Ash. It doesn't really matter if they are Ashley-Ash is what they go by. I have known three men who call themselves Ash in the past 4 years

It's not even unusual-it's quite ordinary.

Where on earth did you get the idea that it was unique?

calmandcollected101 · 14/12/2024 19:55

Asher sounds more like a 'proper' name
