Monty or Joel

We had our baby boy 2 weeks ago and can't agree on a name! I love the name Monty and I think he suits it. My other half isn't as keen but agrees he looks like a Monty. We both like the name Joel, but not sure if it suits him.
Would love to know name which everyone likes ☺️ Thank you!

Joel. It’s mostly said as “Jo-elle” where I live, though.

benefitstaxcredithelp · 10/12/2024 21:46

Joel 💯 lovely name.

Monty is cute but is a commonly used name for dogs and cats and sounds ‘unfinished’ as it’s a diminutive of Montgomery.

GherkOut · 10/12/2024 21:54

I think we'd say 'Jole' here... (South)

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/12/2024 21:55

Joel is my favourite. I love Monty for a child but less so for an adult. Mind you, he’ll grow up with a whole cohort of Alfies, Albies, Arties and Freddies so I guess it will sound normal when he’s an adult.

BootballJoy · 10/12/2024 22:06

Monty. I find Joel a bit of a mouthful.

Squirma · 10/12/2024 22:06

How about mixing both Jonty 😁

Scutterbug · 10/12/2024 22:07

Love Joel. My grandad was a Monty but his full name was Montague.

PlantDoctor · 10/12/2024 22:09

Joel. As pp said, lots of pets are called Monty now (including mine, so biased! 😅)

SabreIsMyFave · 10/12/2024 22:10

Joel out of those 2.

Monty is awful 😬

user1492757084 · 10/12/2024 22:26

Montague or Jonty I would choose.
Monty or Jonty.

Joel is fine too. (Jole)

My favourite is..
Montague Joel - Monty. Montague means pointed hill and was Romeo's second name.

NameChange30 · 10/12/2024 22:45

Joel! It's a lovely name and underused.

Not a fan of Monty I'm afraid, not for a human.

Glover791 · 10/12/2024 23:01

Thank you all so much for your replies 🥰

I loved the idea of calling him Montagu and Monty for short, but my other half doesn't like any longer version.
For me I associate the name Monty with Monty Don ☺️

Yes Joel pronounced like coal. It is a lovely underused name. I do worry about having to correct people as to how we pronounce it though.

With Jonty I worry it would be shortened to Jon which doesn't appeal to me quite as much.

Joel is great.

Monty is a strong flavour for a human, though nice for a dog

theduchessofspork · 10/12/2024 23:35

I think the vast majority of people would say Joel as Jole so I wouldn'"t worry about that,. Joel Montagu is nice,

BoleynMemories13 · 11/12/2024 06:15

Congratulations!

You pick the name you both like and he'll grow in to it. Joel is lovely, very handsome and definitely a name to grow into. I wouldn't expect it to suit a baby, as it's quite a mature sounding name, but that's ok. He'll only be a baby for a very short period of his life.

He may suit Monty now but it's infantile. His dad not being keen should be enough to rule it out.

BettyBardMacDonald · 11/12/2024 07:29

Joel.

Monty is a nickname.

BuzzieLittleBee · 11/12/2024 07:42

Jonty is a diminutive in its own right - of Jonathan.

I know a couple of Jonathans who go by Jonty, and neither are ever Jon. Also a Jonathan who always goes by Jon.

Jonty is a fab name, and much better than Monty (Monty Don is a Montagu, BTW) or Joel.

It's not a given that people will shorten a name. I have a 3 syllable name with several common shortenings and have always used the long version. Just thinking of the kids that live on our road, there is an Evelyn (not Evie), a Charlotte (not Lottie) a Jacob (not Jake) - all happily using their given name.

SkaneTos · 11/12/2024 13:09

Congratulations!

They are both good names!

I, too, associate the name Monty with Monty Don. (He is actually the only Monty I know about, but I'm not from the UK.)

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 11/12/2024 13:21

Definitely Joel.
As pointed out upthread Jonty is short for Jonathan.

Joseph and Jake are nice too.

Underused?? You've got to be kidding, every second boy here is called Joel.

Monty is gorgeous, much classier.

JollyGreenSnake · 14/12/2024 13:29

To me, Monty sounds like a name for a hamster, not a person! Sorry OP.

But if one parent isn't keen on a name, then that name shouldn't really get any further consideration.

Every second boy is called Joel?! Hmm

You can't be in England or Wales, then, because Joel was ranked 69th in 2005 and has been going steadily down in the rankings since then. In 2023 it was ranked 170th.

Joel is a lovely name!

Monty is a posh boy or a Labrador.

PantherchameleonsocksforChristmas · 14/12/2024 16:50

Joel.

Monty makes me think of The Full Monty🤷‍♀️

Where do you live? I knew one Joel growing up, through school. Haven't known any since. Plenty of Josh's though - any other J name is more common than this one actually.
