Is Pandora too “out there”? Thinking of using Pandora Felicity or Pandora Skye. DH’s told his mum who’s said it’s “poncey” and too “out there”.
opinions?

Skye and Felicity are lovely and without the box connection.

Inspired from your list I love ..
Skye Felicity
Callidora Skye
Felicity Plum

lemoncrisp · 04/12/2024 09:21

Bit out there I think ...but I love felicity

NotAnOverSharer · 04/12/2024 09:31

It's not my taste but I think it's a perfectly fine name and people can pronounce it easily etc. I don't think the jewellery shop is an issue, Zara is a popular name as well as shop. The box thing isn't a big deal either. I more think of the joke in Notting Hill but that's very niche 🤣

Pandora / I adore ya / I implore ye/ Don't ignore me

Didn’t she run from him like a startled fawn? 🤣

Sorry OP, just reminds me of Adrian Mole!

Peony15 · 04/12/2024 09:37

Instantly have visions of that tacky jewellery, before that I liked the name.
So no, but just because of brand association.

Pandora? The one who let all the evil into the world? That's like calling your son Beelzebub or Lucifer or Nicodemus.

I'd say much more similar to Eve, Pandora wasn't actually evil, she gave into temptation and let bad stuff into the world.

I don't really like the sound of the name though, prefer Calliope, Athena, Daphne, Persephone, Xanthe.

Ooooh no! Sounds like a stripper! Shock

Indeed. Didn’t it begin ‘Treacle hair and knee socks/Give my system deep shocks’? Dear Adrian.

Umbellifer · 04/12/2024 12:34

I love your second name - Felicity - and your other second name - Skye, they go beautifully together: Felicity Skye Smith (or whatever!)

Mipil · 04/12/2024 12:45

I like it and would think it was a lovely name on someone else’s child… but I would never use it myself for the reasons PP have given - Pandora’s box, Adrian Mole and tacky charm bracelets.

Too many episodes of Paw Patrol has ruined Skye for me 😂 I imagine most toddlers would love to share their name with a puppy hero though.

Had forgotten that bit! I loved Adrian's poetry. The "startled fawn" is definitely ringing bells too. @WaneyEdge

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/12/2024 19:06

Pandora’s kind of cool imo, but then I secretly love a lot of “out there” classical names (like Persephone, Cassiopeia etc) but tbh I don’t think that I’d actually use them for a child in reality - in case they weren’t an extrovert and felt uncomfortable introducing themselves with a name that’s quite unusual/with strong references (I went for something very “safe” for my son for this reason). Maybe as a middle name or definitely an excuse to get a new pet though!

So I guess it depends how much you like Dora? As there is a very good chance that if she’s introverted/on the shyer side, she’ll choose to go by that once old enough (and personally I don’t like the sound of Dora).

I re-read the Mole books at least once a year, they’re a comfort blanket for me. He used “startled fawn” twice, once as a teen with Pandora and once with another woman when
he was older!

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 19:16

I like it . I've always been of the opinion that we shouldn't call every child kate or sarah or whatever.

More unusual names are great.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 04/12/2024 19:17

Pandora would be a lovely name, but the jewellery brand paradoxically cheapens it.

The as others have said, if ‘box’ is still a euphemism for vagina, by the time her cohort becomes sexually aware, Pandora’s box jokes may become annoying.

Kate and Sarah are unusual names now.

WinterCarlisle · 04/12/2024 20:10

I really like it but now I have the Adrian Mole theme tune as an ear worm…

BraveBlueDuck · 04/12/2024 20:13

I can already imagine the bullying and jokes.

Pandora is a jewellery brand, Felicity should only be used to name a cat and isn't Skye the name of a yogurt brand?

Potentiallyplausible · 04/12/2024 20:07

Kate and Sarah are unusual names now.

Maybe on babies.

But I know loads and loads of Kates and Sarah's.

Calliopespa · 04/12/2024 22:18

What’s going on with names tonight?

We’ve just had the name of a woman’s undergarment proposed as a nickname, (Cami) and now Pandora’s box … Next person is going to ask what we think of Knickers ( Nicky for short). Or Barbara with Bra for short.

You can’t use Pandora because of the box association. Sorry .

MaidOfSteel · 04/12/2024 22:47

It always take me back to The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 and three quarters. I think it sounds quite posh, or pretentious. Sorry.

And from memory that name was chosen for his crush because of the “box” association lingering in the background.

Calliopespa · 05/12/2024 07:56

Also makes me think of pandoro, the Italian Christmas sweetbread. I mean it’s yummy (!!) but noone wants to be called after a sweet bakery item. It’s like being called Muffin or Crumpet.
