Bronia

I met a woman the other day through work called Bronia.

I thought it was so pretty and unusual!

I was looking it up and some websites say it's a Polish name, and some other websites say it's a Welsh name.

Is it a Welsh name does anyone know? I just like to know where a name comes from and what it means.

And what do you think of it?

I like it too. I think it's Eastern European. Bronwen is Welsh, but I've never met a Welsh person called Bronia.

AllFours · 03/12/2024 10:06

I prefer Bronagh.

DreadPirateRobots · 03/12/2024 10:06

I would say Polish. It's the name of one of the characters in The Silver Sword.

I think it's pretty, but people may be a bit puzzled if they find out she doesn't have any Polish heritage.

VictorianScreenTime · 03/12/2024 10:06

I’ve never come across it. I know the Irish name “Bronagh” (pron Brona) which is lovely but Bronia would sound too much like Bronagh but a bit “wrong” to me.

EasyComfortDishes · 03/12/2024 10:07

It’s like Brynja, which I believe is Icelandic?

Bunkbedbunk · 03/12/2024 10:08

There's an Irish name Bróna/Bronagh (pronounced to rhyme with Joan - a)
But brón is Irish for sadness/sorrow so I never really understand why people use it!

Yes I think the woman I work with, has Polish grandparents now I think of it.

I think I remember her saying that she was going to visit her grandmother in Poland at Christmas.

So it's a Polish name. It's really beautiful . I love it

Well it's not wrong, if it's right in another language.

I think Bronya is Russian for Armor, or so I heard.

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 10:19

I really like it.

Because the Bronia I know is this tiny, feminine, really beautiful woman, but she has a really strong warrior sounding name.

People at work remember her. As her name is quite unusual.

Yes its Polish, I knew a man called Bronek, which is the male diminutive of Bronislaw, the female version is Bronislawa, Bronia as the diminutive. The w is pronounced like a ‘v’ so like Bonislav/a. He passed away 14 years ago and he was a lovely old boy, thanks for reminding me of my friend.

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 10:21

Polish names are so beautiful. I've met a Katarzyna, a Valeria, a Justyna and an Ania from Poland, through working in different places. Such lovely names

I immediately think of Bronies.

Has anyone read the silver sword. Is it any good. It seems to have been a popular book of that era. Ive heard it mentioned a few times on mumsnet.

It's not a Welsh name I wouldn't have thought. The phonetics wouldn't work - looks like some other language. Unless she pronounces it it Brag-na-eh (or similar)

Sounds like they're going for a Grainne type situation (although I know that's Irish rather than Welsh.)

I don't hate Bronia but it makes me think it might be where all the Brony boys live Grin

Atishooo · 03/12/2024 11:51

It’s a lovely name, I also recognise it from the Silver sword.
