Bronia

I met a woman the other day through work called Bronia.

I thought it was so pretty and unusual!

I was looking it up and some websites say it's a Polish name, and some other websites say it's a Welsh name.

Is it a Welsh name does anyone know? I just like to know where a name comes from and what it means.

And what do you think of it?

I know a Bragnae pronounced Bronya- she's welsh

This isn't Welsh either

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 03/12/2024 12:10

I've always thought of it as Polish and I like it. I also like Bronwen, which is definitely Welsh (note -wen is a female ending in Welsh, -wyn is male).

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 12:12

Bronia . Her nickname is bonbon.

There's an Irish name Bróna/Bronagh (pronounced to rhyme with Joan - a)
But brón is Irish for sadness/sorrow so I never really understand why people use it!

Same for Tristan, Dolores, Deidre I guess.

Has anyone read the silver sword. Is it any good. It seems to have been a popular book of that era. Ive heard it mentioned a few times on mumsnet.

I loved it as a kid. I just bought it for my 10yo.

HollyLondoner · 03/12/2024 12:18

Nia is a Welsh name but not Bronia. Could be shortened to Nia though....

Itsmebronia · 03/12/2024 12:32

This is my name!

I love my name and would definitely reccomend it, it sort of suits my personality. My link is Ukranian, however I think it's quite an old fashioned name so not really used in eastern europe anymore. Im married and have a welsh name (my link is quite far back so my maiden name is Scottish )

People always remember it and often comment on it being very pretty. However this means that (a) it's awkward when ive inevitably forgot their name and (b) when i was at school teachers could always easily remember my name to call me out when i was horsing around 🤣

Also Starbucks will always spell it "braunie" for some reason!

Ive seen is spelled bronja, bronya and bronua as well.

GogLais · 03/12/2024 14:13

Definitely not Welsh. It wouldn't mean boobs but in would be dangerously close to it. It would definitely raise many titters.

The baby name sites are not reliable.

Bronwen is Welsh (the Bronwyn misspelling is awful)

Lallydallydune · 03/12/2024 14:13

What's boobs in Welsh?

bronnau, but in speech it sounds quite like bronia.

Why would you shorten a 2-syllable name to a completely different 2-syllable name? @HollyLondoner
It would be like shortening Damian to Ian.

CookieMonster28 · 03/12/2024 14:46

No
Not pretty IMO, bit masculine sounding if anything!

I like it too. I think it's Eastern European. Bronwen is Welsh, but I've never met a Welsh person called Bronia.

Funnily enough, the Bronia I know is Welsh! She is a lovely person and it's a lovely name.

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/12/2024 14:52

I’m welsh and it’s def not welsh though it could “work” in welsh iyswim

I’ve come across it before and like it
however not sure how you pronounce the o

In welsh would be a short /o/ like in orange

But it could poss be more like the /ow/ sound as in moan, own

GogLais · 03/12/2024 15:44

I’m welsh and it’s def not welsh though it could “work” in welsh iyswim as long as she could handle the giggling.
It would be too close to being called Tits.

StainlessSeal · 03/12/2024 18:24

My DSS is called Bronisław/ Bronek, which means "sword of god" in Polish. Not heard of Bronia, but I'll ask DH when he gets home 😊

I’d assume Bronia was pronounced like “Bron - ya” as that’s the way the one I’ve met says her name. I don’t her well enough to know how it’s spelt though! Pretty sounding name.

Yes that is how it is pronounced

Yes it rhymes with Sonia, some people say it "broneeah" and i never corrected them and 30 years later they still call me that 🤣🤣, I also get "briona" lol

Imicola · 04/12/2024 17:21

I work with a Bronia, pretty sure she is Welsh... not that thay necessarily means that's why she's called Bronia. I agree though, it's a lovely name.

Brónach means sad in modern Irish but brón means bosom as in bosom friends, it means friendly or courageous, stout-hearted rather than sad.

ThePoliteLion · 04/12/2024 20:06

I like it a lot. If you love it, go for it! X

I mentioned it in response to someone else who said it was derived from sadness.

Rainbowandgrey · 05/12/2024 01:12

Brón does mean sorrow in Irish @Arlanymor.
Tá brón orm means I am sad.

Rainbowandgrey · 05/12/2024 08:47

Also very often used for I am sorry.
Literally ‘there is sadness upon me’.
