Wilf

Hi,

My wife and I are expecting a boy in the new year. We would like a traditional name for him and Wilf is the front runner at the moment (Wilfred on his birth certificate).

It seems to be a real marmite name. Some people seem to violently dislike it which is fine. It’s a free country!

We figure he could also be Fred if he doesn’t take to Wilf for whatever reason. He’s got options.

What do you think of Wilf?

I quite like it

TiredEyesToday · 29/11/2024 17:53

I have a kid with a wilf-like name- it’s old fashioned, and was chosen to honour a great grandparent. Get lots of remarks about his lovely / unusual name, and how well it suits him.

SunshineAndFizz · 29/11/2024 17:59

Sounds a bit sappy in my option (sorry).

Please don't. Call him Tom or Will (Thomas and William are very underused these days).

Thomas is the 19th most popular name in England and Wales and William 24th most popular. Loads round here!

I really like Wilf, I've liked it since Wilf in Eastenders. I like it less than i used to, maybe because I've heard it a bit more, but it's still a good name.

Yerto · 29/11/2024 18:22

I don't like it myself but I do know a litle Wilf who is 4/5 and it does seem to work!
There was a Wilf on Traitors too if you watched that.
What about Gabriel, Miles, Jasper, Sebastian 'Seb', Otto, Otis, Casper, Hugo

RaininSummer · 29/11/2024 18:37

I like it

wizzler · 29/11/2024 18:41

Love it . Saw photos of the MN Wilf last week ( on one of the Strictly Threads I think ) and he looked to be doing great

I think it's a good old fashioned name ...definitely would be on my list if I had another

It’s lovely.

A friend has a teenage Wilf. She was mighty pissed off when Boris used the name.

Thanks for the alternative suggestions! I think we prefer traditional to outright posh if you know what I mean?

Gabriel reminds me of the angel Gabriel. Bit soft sounding.

Miles is too public school and just doesn’t have any warmth to it.

Jasper is a bit weasley. Reminds me of Jasper Carrot.

I do like Seb but a friend has a Seb and our surname begins with S so not on the cards.

Otto sounds German.

Otis reminds me of the Aadvark.

Casper the friendly ghost?

Hugo isn’t bad but a bit rah for our taste.

Sorry if I’ve offended anyone 😂. That’s the great things about names. Would be boring if we all liked the same ones.

I do like Thomas or Tom and that is on the shortlist but my wife thinks it’s a bit plain.

William not doable as a close family member already has that.

My uncle Wilf was a lovely man. I like it!

Words · 29/11/2024 19:09

Were I to name a child in the next few weeks:

William
Christopher
Jonathan.
Arthur

Wilfred, no. Although I had a colleague who was considering Wilbur . I put it down to pregnancy hormones.

ZiggyZowie · 29/11/2024 19:11

What about Alfred, it's a other old English name. Thinking of Alfred the Great.

ZiggyZowie · 29/11/2024 19:12

Alfie or Fred for short

Words · 29/11/2024 19:12

The name chosen was almost as bad but that is another story...

Muchtoomuchtodo · 29/11/2024 19:16

I only know one Wilf. He’s 10. He has a very pushy Dad and a pretentious younger sister whose name escapes me,

Luckily we only come across them once a week at a sports club.

If I had a son this week I’d name him James or Toby.

I like Wilf but it reminds me a bit of Boris Johnson.

Kenclucky · 29/11/2024 19:38

I like it :)

bzarda · 29/11/2024 19:40

Absolutely love this name but sadly my husband said no. Great name for a child and adult and lots of nickname options too!

Yes, love Alfred but wife is not keen as Alfie is very common around here.

I read it as MILF. I like Wilfred though.

Haha this list is basically my shortlist. You’ve identified the vibe completely. But unfortunately my wife is not keen on any of them for various reasons. Wilf is the common ground choice.
