Sunny?

Greetings all, someone who I know indirectly named their newborn daughter Sunny. To me it sounds so stupid as the child will have the name for life. It’s also a potential downer, ‘I’m Sunny’- oh no you’re not. What do we all think?
I know Sonny for males is different and a lot nicer.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
FluffMagnet · 26/11/2024 13:47

I strongly dislike both.

AuntieStella · 26/11/2024 14:01

It's not to my taste (nor is Sonny)

As well as not liking it, I think it's got quite a lot of potential for jokes, then would wear thin

Onlyvisiting · 26/11/2024 14:13

I wouldn't. For either.

JC03745 · 26/11/2024 14:20

I know Sonny for males is different and a lot nicer.

A lot nicer! Really??? I went to school with a male Sonny, pronounced Son-ny. Personally, when I read the name Sonny, my brain has to think, hmm, is it
Son-ny or Sunny? I dislike it.

Sunny for a girl is at least pronounced how its spelt, and no different to Summer, Meadow, Sky, Isla.

Wishimaywishimight · 26/11/2024 14:21

Sunny / Sonny are both ridiculous names. Along the lines of "Junior".

Pillarsofsalt · 26/11/2024 14:21

Ah it’s a lovely name. There’s a lot worse names out there. Hopefully she will be a Sunny personality.

CookieMonster28 · 26/11/2024 14:31

There's worse names! At least it's different and not boring.
FWIW I like Sonny for a boy! Although becoming popular

Firsttimebabymummy · 26/11/2024 15:31

It isn't a name I'd choose but there are a lot worse names. I prefer it to Sonny for a boy.

Tootjaskoot · 26/11/2024 15:32

Both lovely names.

Amandasummers · 26/11/2024 15:35

I have a teenage boy sonny (pronounced sunny - you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who call him s-on-ny) I love it, it’s my favourite name of all names - to each their own. I can say he has never experienced any form of ridicule whatsoever for his name.

HoHoHoliday · 26/11/2024 15:40

I dislike Sunny and Sonny as names. To me they are too nicknamey to be actual names.

I know of one boy Sonny who has a brother with a similar style nickname-name so at least they match.

But I know a recent baby girl Sunny who has two siblings with classic traditional names and I do wonder how she will feel about that as she grows up.

RosieLeaf · 26/11/2024 15:43

Also dislike both.

crostini · 26/11/2024 15:45

Really like both

hiddenselkie · 26/11/2024 15:46

I hate Sonny because all I see is Son-y like son, but like Sunny. Not going to use any, though. I do like Sunniva nn Sunny which is Scandi.

SallyWD · 26/11/2024 15:51

It's not a name I'd choose but I'm sure the person will grow into the name. My friend called her daughter Sunny. She's now about 25 and likes her name. She is a smiley person so I suppose it suits her.

toastofthetown · 26/11/2024 17:11

So you’re not planning on using the name Sunny; you’re just using this board to air your negative opinion?

CrispWinterSunshineBright · 26/11/2024 17:39

Love it! Cheer up OP ☀️☀️☀️

Stichintime · 26/11/2024 17:43

Knew a boy called Sunny with bright red hair. Thought it was a good choice for him!

mathanxiety · 26/11/2024 18:20

I like Sunny as a girl's name a lot more than Sonny for a boy.

It's very sweet, and I don't think parents should try to anticipate or work around the rudeness and ignorance of others when choosing names for their children.

MirandaBlu · 26/11/2024 21:20

I had a female classmate called Sonny (pronounced like sunny), real name Sonia. We also had a Sunshine (no one dared call HER Sunny!) who was extremely grumpy. The name still somehow worked for her.

RuthW · 27/11/2024 12:12

Awful

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/11/2024 12:13

I wouldn't choose Sunny as a child's name - but if I liked it, I might choose a name that could be shortened to Sunny (though I can't think of one off the top of my head).

Jostuki · 27/11/2024 12:34

Sunny is sweet for a beautiful little toddler skipping around on a summers day but fast forward to an adult, possibly fat, grumpy and a homely face with straggly hair and it's not quite as appealing.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/11/2024 21:03

Super cute nn for Sunniva (Scandi girls name) or Susanna. Or for any of the plethora of “surname as first names” that end in -son or have a similar sound (like Sullivan) for boys.

But no, I wouldn’t want to go through life with the given name of Sunny (or even Sonny for boys) - everyone has different tastes but personally I’d only find it sweet on a young child.

Hopefully the Sunny you know has a lovely middle name she can use instead when she’s older, if she feels that way as well.

MarigoldSpider · 27/11/2024 21:04

I know lots of men who go by sunny. Short for Sundeep
