DP and I have a shortlist of names but really can’t pick which one to use. I have slight preference to Katie and Emma, DP slightly prefers Anna. We also really like Abby/Abbie/Abigail but can’t pick a spelling and worry it’s a bit dated. Also worry Natalie is a bit dated too.

They all do the job without a fuss.
I prefer Abigail.

leia24 · 20/11/2024 05:08

Natalie is dated and Abigail is ugly but Abbie is nice. Katie and Emma are fine

toastofthetown · 20/11/2024 05:11

I find all of the names a bit dated other than Anna to be honest. It reads like a name list from someone naming my classmates at school.

Interesting I always felt Anna, Emma and Katie were more timeless.
I can see how Natalie and Abbie/Abigail are more dated though.

I don’t think any of them are dated except maybe Natalie. They’re all lovely classics and I know people of all ages with the names, which makes them pretty timeless.

Abigail nn Abby is my personal favourite - I love how well it suits all ages - I can picture it just as easily on myself, my “cool” teen daughter or my primary aged kids. It’s.not really overused in any generation - I know a handful of Abbys who range from 5-50, so it doesn’t feel dated to me.

I love Emma and Katie, but I know too many adults with those names to choose it myself.

Anna is lovely and not really overused in any generation.

Natalie is lovely but I’m not keen on Nat, and my teen daughter’s friends shorten everything, like it or not!

cariadlet · 20/11/2024 06:13

I'm not keen on Natalie but think that all the other names on your list are lovely and agree that their classic, timeless choices.

"they're"

Hanssoe · 20/11/2024 06:18

What do we think of Abby as a stand alone name? I don't love Abigail and would really only be using it because I know people get odd about nicknames as full names.

Emma is my favourite, followed by Anna. Both completely timeless. Abigail is too, but I find the full name to be quite dull (it's the 'gail' part).

Natalie is quite 70s/80s. Catherine, shortened to Kate, is timeless but Katie as a given name feels very dated to me. It was big in the 80s and 90s but seems dated now. I hate how some people lazily pronounce it without the t, Kay-eh.

Definitely Emma or Anna. They're absolute classics which are still well used today but not top 50 popular, which is probably the perfect combination for many people. If you saw the names Anna or Emma written down before meeting someone, you'd genuinely have no idea how old they are going to be. Whereas Natalie or Katie are most likely 30+.

Newsenmum · 20/11/2024 06:33

Anna and Emma feel more classic. Katie will always be a nickname to me.

I'm not a massive fan if I'm honest. Like Katie, Abbie seems like a short form which feels dated now as a stand alone name. While ie/y names are still a massive trend, more do then ever right now, there are definitely some which are dying out and belong more in the 80s/90s (Katie, Abbie, Becky, Nicky, Jamie, Robbie, Billy etc).

MushroomQueen · 20/11/2024 06:36

Emma. Abigail (Abby as a non)

I don't like Natalie personally,

I agree that I like Abby better than Abigail. I think I’d still use Abigail for an easy life - everyone will shorten it to Abby anyway but most people will assume it’s short for Abigail so it saves having to explain all the time.

Salmonfortea · 20/11/2024 06:51

Abigail and all derivatives are awful IMO, but then I've known a couple of nasty ones Grin
Anna is the standout timeless classic.

DustyLee123 · 20/11/2024 06:52

Emma and Katie are classic and lovely.

QuantumPanic · 20/11/2024 07:13

I like Natalie. I would say it's slightly retro, rather than dated. Natalia is also lovely.

Out of the names listed Anna and Natalie are my favourites.

Vax · 20/11/2024 07:58

Abby isn't a pretty name but it's better than Abigail. Gail is dire.

XmasMarkets · 20/11/2024 07:59

Emma!

JaneandtheLaundry · 20/11/2024 08:00

Have you thought of Natalia and Emilia as alternatives to Natalie and Emma? They were on our list.
Out of your original list, I like Anna best.

Wherethewildthingsfart · 20/11/2024 08:01

Voted Anna, it’s beautiful and classic.
My very close second choice would be Katie.

Firsttimebabymummy · 20/11/2024 08:03

Anna is my favourite, followed by Emma and then Katie.

Don't like Abby / Nat.

I’d agree with that. I do think the latter two are dated, and the first three classic, but Anna has been used less in recent years so has a freshness to it.

I’ve known nasty Abigails - and actually Natalies too. Sometimes this does seem to be a thing . Also Tamara.

I think it’s a bit sort of wet and flabby.
