Both me and my partner had decided on baby’s name before finding out the gender Robin(boy) / Robyn(girl).

we have since found out baby is a little boy🩵
partner still likes the name as do I but I’m on the fence as to is it more a girls name?
I really love it but I don’t want it to be something lo is bullied about when he’s older 🥺

It's clearly a name for both sexes albeit spelt differently. You have to agree, so if you're not sure then rethink.

Scrimt · 15/11/2024 15:05

I don't really like it as a boys' name but don't think it'd makes him a target of bullies either.

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/11/2024 15:10

I think it’s lovely as a boy’s name, but unfortunately when names are unisex, they tend to drift more towards being girls names over time, which does put me off unisex names for boys unfortunately.

Littletreefrog · 15/11/2024 15:12

Not keen for a boy. How about Rowan, Rohan or Roman I think they have a bit of a similar vibe to Robin.

Noideawhatiam · 15/11/2024 15:13

I know a few little boys called Robin the only female Robyn I know is an adult.
I think it's actually more popular for boys at the moment.

Pemba · 15/11/2024 15:15

Um, Robin Hood? I don't think people can forget that it is primarily a boy's name (originally a short form of Robert). Although obviously it has also been used for girls a lot too for quite a while now. I think it is one of the few names that will remain unisex.

Robin Hood Disney GIF

When I hear that name I always think of Robin Hood.

toastofthetown · 15/11/2024 15:16

Robin is our top choice for the the baby we’re having is a boy. I’m not really concerned about bullying - it’s moderately popular for boys and is rising in popularity. And I think that while names can be used to tease a child, a child isn’t teased because of their name. Also any name can be used to bully a child if people want to. Sarahs were ten a penny when I was at school, but that didn’t help Psycho Sarah in my year.

If you don’t like it for a boy anymore or even if it just doesn’t feel right then it might be worth considering other options. Sometimes names which you’ve loved for years don’t feel right for that baby at that time, for no apparent reason.

smallsilvercloud · 15/11/2024 15:17

I think Robin for a boy sound better and prefer the spelling.

KirstenBlest · 15/11/2024 15:23

It's a boy's name that's sometimes used for a girl.
I don't like Rohan or Roman, and they have a different vibe.

twentysevendresses · 15/11/2024 15:30

My partner's name is Robin - he absolutely hates it (I don't 'dislike' it, but that's irrelevant really 🤷‍♀️).

He's always hated it and won't answer to it. He goes by Rob...so is often called (or assumed to be called) Robert, which he says he'd much prefer to have been called. His words are "it's a sissy name" and he's never really understood why his extremely working class, north eastern, coal miner dad got railroaded into it (which is apparently what happened). His dad never calls him Robin either 🤷‍♀️

DappledThings · 15/11/2024 15:33

I prefer it for a boy. Robin is classic, Robyn is dated.

SemperIdem · 15/11/2024 15:33

I prefer Robin as a male name.

Firsttimebabymummy · 15/11/2024 18:47

I prefer it for a boy. I think of Robin Williams and Robin Hood.. both in a good way.

BootballJoy · 15/11/2024 20:25

I love it as a boys' name but dislike it on a girl for some reason.

KirstenBlest · 15/11/2024 20:28

It's too american as a girl's name but quite cool for a boy.

TeddyBeans · 15/11/2024 20:30

Robin is absolutely fine for a boy. It's uncommon now but there were two in the class I worked in last year. Funny how that happens. I like it!

GreatTheCat · 15/11/2024 20:50

No, I don't like it. Too much of a easy target at school.

StormingNorman · 15/11/2024 20:54

Robin is definitely more of a boys name.

Robin Williams
Christopher Robin
Batman and Robin

LorelaiS · 15/11/2024 21:02

I like it! But a lot of people will probably call him Rob. Especially when he hits his teens. You need to see if you like the idea of that :)

Fetchthehotwaterbottle · 15/11/2024 23:04

I've known four Robins in my life.
A 76 year old neighbour woman, one of the female nurses where I work, a friend's younger brother, who always got called Rob by everyone except his family, and an early boyfriend who believe me would never get bullied; I met him when he was in the Navy but he also was always called Rob, by classmates, in the Navy, and most of his friends.
He only got called Robin by his mum his dad and his brother.

KatRee · 15/11/2024 23:10

There someone else posted a thread about Robin as a boy's name recently. Most of the replies were positive about it Robin for a boy www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/5196688-robin-for-a-boy

DappledThings · 15/11/2024 15:33

I prefer it for a boy. Robin is classic, Robyn is dated.

I agree. Robin for a boy is long-standing. Robyn for a girl had a peak of popularity and now seems dated.

We have a Robin (male) in the family. It's a great name.

user1492757084 · 16/11/2024 03:49

Robin Hood.
It's a strong male name with great history and association.

TheForestCalls · 16/11/2024 04:28

Robin is a fine name for a boy. Definitely with the spelling of Robin for a boy and Robyn for a girl though.
