For a baby girl - Tess or Flora? What kind of vibe do you get from each name? I'm interested to get an idea of how each is perceived by others.

thank you

I thought flora sounds sweet until I thought of the margarine.

So therefore I prefer Tess

Anisty · 29/10/2024 21:28

Tess is by far my favourite. I think of Natasha Kinski in Tess of The D'Urbervilles - a very beautiful, slim and elegant young woman with dark hair.

I know DH thinks of 2 ton Tessie though!!

Flora. I really don't like it at all. It's margarine.

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/10/2024 21:34

I really like both! If I try to imagine the name that I’d like to be called the most, it would be Tess - a lovely, pretty, simple and underused name.

MillyMichaelson · 29/10/2024 21:36

Tess is gorgeous

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/10/2024 21:41

Flora is sweet looking and sweet natured- a Victorian young lady. Tess is a feisty, romantic type wandering across wild moorland.

Both are pretty but I’d go for Tess (I like a classic though so she might be Teresa on the BC).

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 29/10/2024 21:43

Tessa was on my list for my first daughter, so I'd go with Tess

SkaneTos · 29/10/2024 22:08

They are both beautiful names.

The name Tess makes me think of the character Tess McLeod in the tv series "McLeod's Daughters". She is wonderful. Her full first name is Teresa, but I think Tess works well as a name on its own.

Inezz · 29/10/2024 22:10

Tess is a great name.

Flora sounds a bit 'wet' to me?

Scutterbug · 29/10/2024 22:12

Love both. Think Flora just edges it for me.

mum2jakie · 29/10/2024 22:13

Think I'd go with Tessa rather than Tess but it is a lovely underused name

StormingNorman · 29/10/2024 22:14

I used to love Flora until someone said “spreads easily like margarine”. That pretty much ruined it for me. Florence (Florrie) is a cute alternative.

Tess is cute too.

User122456 · 29/10/2024 22:14

Tess

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 29/10/2024 22:16

Flora - Tess is just far too prim for me personally. I know a little Flora, no margarine thoughts when it’s a real person’s name. Flora seems to have far more personality and pizazz than Tess although I know most of Mumsnet will think the opposite.

DramaAlpaca · 29/10/2024 22:16

Love both, but I'd pick Tess over Flora. Only just, though.

FleasAndKeef · 29/10/2024 22:27

I love Tess/Tessa and would have used it, but when I suggested it to DH, he immediately pointed out "tess-ticle" 🙄 and it put me off

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/10/2024 22:37

“Tess- ticle” would have never occurred to me, I admit 🤣. I have heard “Ten ton Tess” from my parents generation though (so might be an issue if obesity runs in your family) and “Flora spreads easily” might be a risk once she’s in senior school. But most names have a least one issue imo - at least Flora and Tess are pretty, not overused and simple to say and spell.

Mumofgirls2017 · 29/10/2024 22:41

Flora

i think it’s prettier 🥰

IAmAFirestarter · 29/10/2024 22:44

Tess sounds like a much cooler chick than Flora

WildCherryBlossom · 29/10/2024 22:52

Girls I have known called Tess and Flora have all had a wild steak, charming, head strong, full of life and laughter.

I think of Tess having dark hair and Flora very blonde.

OtterOnAPlane · 29/10/2024 22:54

Tess. I don't like the Ooooor sound in Flora.

OtterOnAPlane · 29/10/2024 22:55

I do also really like Tess, rather than just preferring it to Flora! It's gutsy.

Els1e · 29/10/2024 22:57

Really like them both but Tess just hints ahead for me. Strong Thomas Hardye female

wizzler · 29/10/2024 22:58

Do they both go with the surname Op? If your surname is only one syllable I would recommend Tessa instead of Tess

I'm pretty sure it was 2 ton tessie (not 10) !! Whichever, totally different connotation from Roman Polanski's beautiful Tess!

SnowFrogJelly · 30/10/2024 00:41

Tess Daly and marge
