Thoughts on the names Henley or hedley. We live in the UK. Please be really honest.

My grandfather's name was Hedley. He always went by Peter though. He was born circa 1920.

Right but you're blowing up "active threads" for everyone with all these separate threads. 🙄

What does that mean? This is my first time using Mumsnet. What is the problem with active threads being .... Active?

Henley is ok, Hedley is awful. I’ve seen your other threads and I think Xavier is best, followed by Austin, then Augustus then Henley, then Hedley. If it was August instead of Augustus that would be number 1!

Thank you for your feedback. That is really helpful ☺️

I think Henley sounds like the choice of an influencer’. Hedley is not good. Will he get called ‘Hed’ for short? Even if it’s not a plan at the moment I think that’ll happen. He’ll be teased, especially if god forbid he has a ginormous noggin. Another post said you liked Austin? Austin is miles above either of these; it’s smart, but quite modern/cool. 😀

Thank you

There was a man called Hedley working in the same office in my first job. it suited him. Other men about the same age as him had names like Brian, Barry, Neil and Colin.
Henley is a nice place to visit but doesn't seem like a person's name.

Active threads isn't being active if all it's full of is repeats of the same thread. For people who want to read a roundup of other things (gardening, AIBU, feminism, cat threads, etc) that are being pushed out of the way for thread after thread of the same thread with one word different.

You've used some sort of social media before, yes? So you know that starting eleventy billion new posts about the same thing will fill up people's newsfeed with that, and writing one post will mean people can see things from other people and have a continuous conversation on the topic you've posted about instead of a bitty one that's all over the place. It's the same on MN, except MN doesn't have an algorithm to minimise the effect of people who do this.

If you haven't used social media, you must have email or you wouldn't be able to sign up to MN. You will know that sending a load of emails to the same recipients with exactly the same message will fill up people's inboxes and annoy people.

C'mon. You know this. People have tried pointing it out to you gently.

Are these threads not being shown in baby names only? Why would it be shown in gardening, feminism or cats? I ticked the sub section box of baby names so I assumed it would only show in that category. What's the point of subsections if they don't prevent it showing all over the website?

I'm guessing your annoyed that it's different threads from the same person, so if it was a different people posting the exact same threads that would be ok?

As you are an expert on Mumsnet it would seem, what would you like me to do now that they have already been posted?

Neither is good. Henley is the least bad, because it doesn’t shorten to “Hed”.

Jessie1259 · 23/10/2024 11:17

Both awful. Stick with Xavier.

Mochudubh · 23/10/2024 11:22

Hedley makes me think of Blazing Saddles, but I'm old.

Without wanting to completely derail, active threads should be a good mix of what is going on around the forum. If you post repeatedly in one section, then that gets pushed to the active list

You want a name for one dc, so why the need for many threads?

Pretty sure you started with one in the original instance ? Are you the one with dc called Miller and Sienna or similar?

EDIT: maybe not that op

Not my cup of tea. Clothing range.

Els1e · 23/10/2024 12:03

Don't like either of them. My neighbour's cockerpoo is called Henley. Prefer Austin or Xavier.

No that's not me in regards to Sienna and miller but I have made multiple posts.

I am still not understanding what the issue is. A good mix of what? As I said I have posted this in the baby name section and I assume that is where it's showing not all over the site, as yes that would be annoying if you are looking up cats like miraculous lady bug said. Even if it's showing up in other areas is it not possible to scroll passed it to another topic that is of more interest? Or does the site not work like that?

As I am posting in baby names and I am asking about.... Baby names, I don't understand what the issue is? I didn't put them in one post because I didn't want them compared I didn't ask which is better Xavier or Austin I asked about the names independently. This is no different to what every other post is doing in the baby name section... Asking about opinions on .... Baby names. So miraculous lady bugs comment about the same thread but one word different is ridiculous as that is basically what every post is about in this section asking opinions about a different name!!!!

If I was posting exactly the same thing repeatedly then I would understand where you are coming from but they are different names. So the issue is the posts coming from one person not the posts themselves?

I am not holding anyone to ransom to continue commenting on my posts. And I don't normally comment on post that are of no interest to me so if that's the case for others (miraculous lady bug, I'm looking at you!!😜) then it might be less stressful for them to scroll a little further and by pass name related posts.

Is there a way of turning off comments?as I'm not sure what everyone wants me to do after they have already been posted?

ChessieFL · 23/10/2024 12:37

The threads are in the baby names forum. However, all threads that are being commented on appear in the Active Threads list. Many people using Mumsnet go straight to active threads to see what’s new and it’s a bit annoying if it’s just full of baby name threads instead of a mix of threads from all over the site. That’s what the pp means.

I see, well as I said before, I'm not holding anyone ransom to comment on my post and I assume they are filling the active threads list because people are commenting on it, which would suggest that people find an interest in it in some way?

If people don't like seeing active threads in the active threads list then I'm not sure how I can help them. As asked before can they not bypass/ scrolled past to see other things of interest? If thats not the case then maybe it's something that is taken up with admin of Mumsnet.

Do you know if there is a way to turn off a thread to stop people commenting?

OP posts:
ChessieFL · 23/10/2024 12:54

You can’t stop people commenting, no. The only thing you can do would be to ask Mumsnet HQ to withdraw the thread but they only do that if there’s good reason.

Supermand · 23/10/2024 12:57

Both these names are bad. Also if you’re looking for a “posh” name (was that you?), they definitely aren’t. Henley is a nice place with plenty of posh people but people who live there are called things like George and William not Hedley and Henley.

Ok thank you. I will know for the future if I were to ever post on here again but don't want to upset the Mumsnet police with too many posts, or them being too popular and active!

Wow, I'd heard Mumsnet was not for the faint hearted but didn't quite believe it.

I wish all I had to grumble about was innocent posts about baby names on an online forum!!😜😂

Thanks again ☺️

Honestly op don’t worry about the multiple name threads, it’s too late to change it now anyway, and really it’s not that much of a big deal.

ginasevern · 23/10/2024 13:10

I'm old enough to remember the film Blazing Saddles, so Hedley to me would be a comedy name I'm afraid.

BloodyHellBob · 23/10/2024 13:11

I've never heard Hedley as a first name but know several people with it as a surname. People shorten it to Hedders or Deadly Hedley both of which are a bit grim.

It's not silly, @Iwouldliketogoonholiday .
If you'd posted What are your thoughts on Augustus, Austin, Xavier, Henley and Hedley, you'd have one big jumbled up thread.

The Xavier one is a pile-up. Shame cos it's a nice name. Some names seem to attract the ones who will point blank refuse to accept any opinion different to their own.
