Thoughts on the name Augustus for a baby boy. We live in the UK. Please be really honest. If you do or don't like it your reasons would be helpful. Any other suggestions of a similar vibe.

Thanks

Gloop.

Entertherubicon · 23/10/2024 04:27

It reminds me of Augustus Gloop, the greedy boy from Charlie & the chocolate factory who met an unfortunate end.

The names i like atm are:
Sebastian
Benjamin
Matthew
Gabriel
Simeon
Daniel
Felix
Nathaniel
Abraham

Im from the Uk but don’t live there now. I know two, father and son, both called Augie for short.. I love their names but don’t know how well they translate to the UK name market.

WhatTheFuk · 23/10/2024 04:31

I would think Gloop. If you like Augustus, How about Augustine?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/10/2024 04:32

I’ve now got the Augustus Gloop song going through my head.

I don’t think it’s a nice name even without the connotations.

LauderSyme · 23/10/2024 04:33

I LOVE this name!

I wasn't brave enough to use it for ds though. My straw poll amongst friends revealed that lots of people had negative associations with Augustus Gloop from Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.

Plus I figured that Gus would be a natural nickname and that felt too close to 'gusset' for my liking. Or Augie which sounds like 'orgy'. Such a shame.

Roman
Sebastian
Zachariah

I do like Gabriel but my hubby wasn't keen.

A lot of people mention Charlie and the chocolate factory ☹️

For some reason when I say that in my head it sounds quite feminine and reminds me of Justine.

I typed Constantine in my list above but had second thoughts about how useful the suggestion would be and deleted it.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 04:46

It has family connections and I love it so much and it's the right name in my heart but Its not my name and I don't want my son to hate it or be teased so I don't think I am brave enough either.

My husband loves Zachariah (not Zachery/Zakery) but I was worried about using a bible name and the weight that goes with that name (means and origins of names are important to me) but also Zak/Zach is very popular in it's different forms and that upsets me a bit as I don't like overly popular names. I also wouldn't want it shortened and I think people would automatically shorten it to Zac.

Other than that the name Zachariah is beautiful and I do like it alot.

"For some reason when I say that in my head it sounds quite feminine and reminds me of Justine."

We all have our own associations but the Augustine I knew was very successful and respected, so nothing like Justine for me.

Constantine is a very strong name. I do like it. Will say it in my head for a bit.

Another Gloop

OneJollyGuide · 23/10/2024 04:53

I’m older and I remember the very old poem from Germany of Augustus who would not eat his soup! It’s a horrible poem and I don’t like the name, way too long and too many syllables.
Find something with 2 syllables they always sound better imo.

merrymelodies · 23/10/2024 04:56

I like August but Augustus is too much.

wandawaves · 23/10/2024 04:57

What about just August?

I like Zachariah but it'll definitely get shortened to Zac!

Never heard of that poem will try and find it.

I have been trying to find a name with 2 syllables that we liked and I'm struggling. The only ones that came close were Austin and Henley (not sure it's special enough and too close to Henry).

If you have any suggestions that would be great.

Augustus makes me think of a fat, pompous, middle-aged man.

It starts with 'august' (respected. impressive) and adds 'tus' to create a fussily over-long name. The whole thing (plus the Ceaser connection) coveys massive self-importance.

Zachariah on the other hand is lovely, as is Zach (and not that common).

This is helpful thank you as I notice August is becoming more popular and I was struggling to understand why people were loving August but hating Augustus.

Our other front runner is Xavier. I have done another post but probably should have just done one post all together!

OP posts:
HoppingPavlova · 23/10/2024 05:19

A big nope for Augustus- Gloop and a greedy boy automatically comes to mind and no doubt everyone will sing the Oompa Loompa song.

Don't like Xavier, reminds me of the superhero movies, I think it was Patrick Stewart or someone like that who plays him so now I associate that with an old baldie.

I love Zachariah, lovely name. Will definitely get Zac but don’t see why that’s a problem. Where I am the majority of guys names either get ‘o or ‘aaaay’ added to the end. We took endless pains to foolproof the names we picked so this couldn’t happen. Nope. People find a way around it. So think Zac’o or Zac’aaayy with the name Zachariah. Probably not an issue where you are but point being you can give whatever name you like and think you have found ones that can’t be shortened or bastardised and people will find a way.

WhatAboutTheCats · 23/10/2024 05:23

Another vote for August here. I'm shamefully a huge name snob - hate names that sound really posh/pretentious or that are too popular. I think Xavier falls into the former. August is just lovely.

leafybrew · 23/10/2024 05:25

Prefer Zach/Zac - and what's wrong with having the same name as someone else Confused?

Augustus - nooo for reasons others have mentioned.

Xavier is fine - but people may assume he's half French as surely that's a French name?
