Thoughts on the name Augustus for a baby boy. We live in the UK. Please be really honest. If you do or don't like it your reasons would be helpful. Any other suggestions of a similar vibe.

Thanks

Those suggesting August, are you saying it like the month, or the adjective (Aw-GUST)?

Is it Eugenie or Beatrice who has an August?

Manchesterbythesea · 23/10/2024 08:34

Don’t like it at all. Can’t imagine giving a lovely baby boy such an ugly name. It’s up there with Austin for me. Just sounds horrible.

PandorasJam · 23/10/2024 08:34

Would you consider Caligula?

I really like Augustus , although I think I like August and Augustine more.

Realistically, Roald Dahl characters are not going to be prevalent in the generation of children being born now, children's literature has moved on. And anyway, surely almost every name can be picked apart and used for playground meaness if children are determined to be nasty? My mum was told not to give me my name because of a oncd popular song but it's never been an issue, I think once or twice a lone school kid started singing it at me and laughing. I just gave them the side eye and they looked a bit of a pratt really.

My children would never make fun of other kids names. Names are so diverse in their generation, so different to when I was at school when everyone had the name ten names and if you had anything a bit different you stuck out like a sore thumb. The world has changed since Mumsnetters were at school! Way too much gets made on here of children being bullied for their name. And not enough made of whether its a suitable name for a future adult.

Hate to break it to you but my son and all his friends all know and love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They are 7.

california22 · 23/10/2024 08:42

Nope sorry. Sounds like taken out from a latin book

CheeseWisely · 23/10/2024 08:43

children's literature has moved on

Sorry @DinahSlade, I really don't think it's moved on to the degree that Roald Dahl is a distant memory. They made a new movie related to Charlie & the Chocolate Factory only last year. It's still very much being read and loved.

Beat me to it😅

The movie Wonka was released last year and aimed at an international audience so I agree.

What the actual fuck is a “footballer name”?

You mean a name that comes from another culture, like many footballers?

I’m guessing that there’s a famous football player called Xavier but maybe pronounced the the Spanish way because of football’s popularity in Spanish speaking countries? I don’t know if people think of this player when they see the name?

TheaBrandt · 23/10/2024 08:49

Well I like it but I have quite bad taste in names so that’s not necessarily a good thing. I liked Augusta for a girl but Dh and every single other person in my life hated it.

Newbie887 · 23/10/2024 08:50

I didn’t immediately think of Gloop. I thought of old fashioned type boy and autumn leaves 😂.

I think Gus is so cute. Personally I’m not so sure about Augustus. It’s a bit of a mouthful and sounds quite posh. Of course everyone’s tastes are different so if you like it and other people don’t then so what!!

if you want something shorter and more mainstream you could try August?

Miffylou · 23/10/2024 08:51

Sorry, I don’t like it. Apart from the Gloop thing, it sounds pompous to me. I think "August" is just silly because of the month. I’m not keen on Zachariah - too long and fussy, though it’s better if your surname is just one syllable.

Absolutely honest answer? think it’s awful, with or without the Wonka link, sorry. I’d inwardly roll my eyes and feel sorry for the child who had such pretentious parents!

Do you also think that April, May and June are silly names?

Lemonngingert · 23/10/2024 08:57

It’s was DFs middle name - I like it now but thought it was odd as a child

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 05:08

Our other front runner is Xavier. I have done another post but probably should have just done one post all together!

That’s way nicer! Please don’t use Augustus.

Fat greedy kid who falls in the chocolate. Just no :)

HotCrossBunplease · 23/10/2024 08:55

Yes for April. May not so much because it is also hawthorn blossom. June not quite so much because I suppose it is more common and I’ve got used to hearing it, but they all seem odd to me for a baby not born in that month. Even if they are, I don’t see that any of them are any better than calling a child March.

Lifestooshort71 · 23/10/2024 09:02

I don't know Gloop but i do think of the Roman Emperor Augustus so a big name to live up to?

MenopauseSucks · 23/10/2024 09:04

I know an Augustus - nickname Gus - in his late-50s.
I don't recollect any bullying at school. Very good looking, intelligent & sporty.
His school days might've been different if he'd been nerdy, non-sporty.
I wouldn't use it myself but the Gus I know is lovely so I view it in a positive light.

Bouledeneige · 23/10/2024 09:07

I like Augie but not Augustus. And I'm not sure I'd love Augie for an adult. To me Augustus conjures up a posh aristo buffoon shooting ducks or a Roman Emperor in a toga.

Jessie1259 · 23/10/2024 09:09

Yes Augustus Gloop was my first thought. I'm not keen on August either and think Augustine and Constantine sound feminine and frilly.

I love Xavier, recognisable but not over used and Zachariah is good too but bound to end up as Zac.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 09:10

crumblingschools · 23/10/2024 08:21

I didn’t automatically think Gloop but did think that is a big name to live up to. Will more than likely get shortened in some way, Gus. Don’t like August.

Xavier might have various pronunciations

Remember this is your child’s name, they are the one who ultimately has to live with it.

Your last sentence is exactly why I am debating it so much. It doesn't matter what I really love as rit won't be my name. It will be his name.

Aside from the gloop, Augustus sounds like pompous to me.

What about Alexander / Zander?

NewGreenDuck · 23/10/2024 09:14

PandorasJam · 23/10/2024 08:34

Would you consider Caligula?

Or Justinian or Trajan or Hadrian or Antonine? Sorry I know I'm being silly!
And Augie makes me think of an old animation called Augie Doggie.

Iwouldliketogoonholiday · 23/10/2024 09:16

Ok, I think the overwhelming response is no. Thanks for your feedback.
