Vintage Boy names

We are struggling to pin down a name for a boy due soon. I'm overthinking and I guess was hoping for the "love it" moment we had with our DD.

Our shortlist:

Albert - this is DH fav. I do like it too but I've read people associating it with the PA piercingConfused Is that enough to be put off a name? It was the name we had for our DD if a boy. My DH said it'll be a fleeting association and I'm overthinking of course!

Walter - goes well with our last name. It's recently been added to our list, love the nn Walt.

Ronnie - was a family name but a bit meh for me

Oscar - feels safe and works well with our DD.

Franklyn / Frank - I loved but cooling off from it.

I wouldn't say those names were vintage. They are all very popular children's names. If you are happy with that then they are good names but likely to be a fee in each class.

Vintage names are Roy, Kenneth, John, Roderick, Keith etc.

Needanewname42 · 22/10/2024 12:22

I'm not so keen on Ronnie, i think I'd go Ronald with Ron / Ronnie as a nn.

If you like Walter you might also like Wallace.

Sandwichgen · 22/10/2024 12:28

John

strong, plain, has been around a very long time

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/10/2024 12:32

Albert is great and I don’t have any negative associations with it!

Oscar is good too.

Do you like

Alfred nn Alfie / Freddie
Robert nn Robbie / Bobby
Arthur
Frederick
George
Charlie

Where I’m from, loads of people my age (late millennials/old gen Z) have given their kids these names (except Walter) so I’d not really worry about the Albert nickname. All 5 of the Alberts I know of to by Albie and I don’t know anyone who’s mentioned/made fun of the piercing but the eldest is only 5 so 🤷‍♀️ only thing to add is that I Franklin more than Franklyn 😊

bzarda · 22/10/2024 12:36

Love Walt and Albert/Albie.
Every Ronnie I've ever taught has been really naughty so I have negative associations with that name as a teacher!

CrispyCrumpets · 22/10/2024 12:46

Anthony/Tony
Robert/Rob
William/Will
Alan
James/Jim
Richard/Ricky/Rich
Kenneth/Kenny/Ken
Terence/Terry
Geoffrey
Ralph
Philip
Dennis
Eric
Gordon
Arthur
Douglas
Leonard
Stanley
Howard
Ernest
Nicholas
Timothy
Ivan
Samuel
Sidney

These are all names popular in the 40s which would make them old man names now, unless you want even older like Egbert and Eboneezer etc 😁

Love Albert and Walter

Ernest
Ralph
Edwin
Edgar
Gene
Gordon
Gilbert

Albert and Oscar are sooo overused that they'll soon sound dated!

I like

Walter
Anthony
Quentin
Vincent
Clement

pumpkinpam · 22/10/2024 13:21

Frank by a country mile out of those choices. Great, solid, timeless name and Frankie as a nn is very cute.

Stanley is also nice.
Wilfred/Wilf is one of those old names that's made a huge comeback and is massively popular now.
Personally quite like Hector but it's more Greek warrior than vintage I think.

Love Walter.
When you say vintage, how vintage? Old vintage would be:

Merlin
Gawain
Edmund
Cnut
Oswald
Cedric
Osric
Sherlock

unmemorableusername · 22/10/2024 13:37

I do t know what you mean by the association with Albert.

They are all on trend names though.

Actual old fashioned names are things like

Stanley
Hubert
Bernard
Humphrey
Wilbert
Curtis
Percy
Howard
Caesar
Bruce
Maurice
Edgar
Randolph
Geoffrey
Stephen
Harold
Richard
Dudley
Clifford
Hendrick
Fulton
Ralph

This. Really not sure why it hasn't come back when all sorts of other names have.

I'm afraid I don't like any of your names apart from Oscar, which seems to be everywhere atm and is therefore getting dull (to me anyway). Arthur and Anthony, suggested by a PP, are nice.

KirstenBlest · 22/10/2024 14:05

@unmemorableusername , look up Prince Albert piercing.

Vintage to me suggests names from the 1930s (or 1925 - 1945)

Frank is OK but Franklyn is frankly awful. Franklin is american not vintage.
Ronnie, Wlter and Albie are OK. Oscar is very popular

GiftWrappedSuburbanDreams · 22/10/2024 14:12

Oscar is my favourite.
How about:

Austin
William
Hugo
Finn
Alexander
Sebastian

twoduesoon · 22/10/2024 14:42

Thanks for all suggestions. I realise a few of our options are now becoming more popular with the shift in trends.

Some really good suggestions 😊

Only one mention so far of my DS's name - Edmund.

I think it's splendid (well I would!) and you don't meet may of them.

Edwin and Edgar are good too.
