We are struggling to pin down a name for a boy due soon. I'm overthinking and I guess was hoping for the "love it" moment we had with our DD.

Our shortlist:

Albert - this is DH fav. I do like it too but I've read people associating it with the PA piercingConfused Is that enough to be put off a name? It was the name we had for our DD if a boy. My DH said it'll be a fleeting association and I'm overthinking of course!

Walter - goes well with our last name. It's recently been added to our list, love the nn Walt.

Ronnie - was a family name but a bit meh for me

Oscar - feels safe and works well with our DD.

Franklyn / Frank - I loved but cooling off from it.

I’m afraid Albert does just make me think of Prince Albert (so the piercing) whereas similar Alfred makes me think “King Alfred the Great”, which is obviously better! Maybe it would be different if I knew lots in RL but they mostly all seem to be Albie or Alfie around here rather than the full version.

Walter and Oscar are quite nice - I especially like Walter as Sir Raleigh is a cool namesake plus Walt Whitman. But if you are going retro then personally my favourite retro boys name is Wilfred (like Wilfred Owen) - I was very tempted by it for my own DS but in the end went for something similar but more timeless.

Less keen on Franklin as Frank seems to be getting a bit trendy now, and I really dislike the sound of Ronnie, sorry.

Franklin was my top contender 9 years ago when I had my son! Had it chosen for months and then when he was born it didn't seem right and so we went with Albert..
he is actually Albert Franklin .
(He does go by Albie most of the time, which seems to be a name on here people like to bash 🙄)

I wouldn't let popularity put you off some of them either, the most random/unusual names are getting multiples in class now as they aren't quite as unique as everyone thinks!

Good luck 😊

How about Francis with Frank as a nickname?
Albert is fine, I don't particularly associate with the piercing. Not a fan of Walter or Ronnie. Oscar is nice but very popular where I live.

I like Ferdinand - I only skim-read so not sure whether it's been suggested already.

Something that hasn't been suggested and a friend's little grandson has just been named this: Julian. It feels refreshing yet very traditional.

KirstenBlest · 25/10/2024 08:48

There are Julians my age and I dislike the name. There are much nicer names.

Thank you for all the suggestions, we will write them down and I think we'll have a top three and decide once little man is here.

I'm back warming to Albert and it does to well with our DD / last name!
