ok i'm 20 weeks pregnant and have just found out i am having a boy

whilst we had loads of girls names we are finding it harder to come up with a name for our little boy

so far on my list i have

jack
george
preston
austin
charlie
sid

on dh's list are

mason
brodie
christian
sid

i like brodie but just think that it's maybe too american and also both our other kids names end in a eee sound and that it;s just too much. Dh also likes sid like me but not sure if lo would get teased with a name like that

opinions and suggestions would be great please

we can't really have any names beginning with h as our surname is similar to hill and it would sound a bit silly

I love Sid. Think it's really cute. I only knew one baby Sid and he's grown up now.

mustsleep · 24/04/2008 12:50

we both like sid but would it be sid or sidney? and now dh is set on brodie arrgghhh need to talk him round will be showing him this thread tonight

I think Sid on its own is fine. Not sure about Brodie. I also like Christian (but it's bound to be shortened to Chris) and another name I like (but might be too American for you), is Ethan.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 24/04/2008 12:57

was it jamie theakston- not sure bot some c list celeb had a sid last week

ds4's middle name is george so obv like that

love Christian (dh said no)

Austin fab (buti did used to collect mini's and nearly married a mr healy)

dont like preston or brodie muvh but its your choice not mine

mustsleep · 24/04/2008 12:59

i liked christian but i agree that it would be shortened to chris so that has put me off

Oscar is another cute one (but not too frequently used, around here, anyway)

mustsleep · 24/04/2008 13:01

dh has already said a def no to oscar i suggested it after it was used on estenders!

belgo · 24/04/2008 13:03

I thought Brodie was a girl's name?

Don't like Preston but the rest are fine.

PestoMonster · 24/04/2008 13:04

Oh! I don't watch Eastenders. I'm running out of ideas now. I think boys names are definitely harder than girls.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 24/04/2008 13:07

brodie is unisex

biys names are harder i think, mine are called

samuel godfrey
stirling max
harold jarvis griffith
sebastian george

so there may be ideas there, but you might have to compromise and just have something you can both live with as opposed to love

PestoMonster · 24/04/2008 13:09

Wow! Nice selection of names Peachy.

PeachyHas4BoysAndLovesIt · 24/04/2008 13:14

and so many of them too.....

jellybeans · 24/04/2008 13:20

I only like jack and austin, not keen on Sid at all but it is what you like that counts!

loc · 24/04/2008 13:38

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie!!! It's lovely. I was going to call my DS Jack, but when I saw him I said, "oh, he's not Jack", and he went nameless for about 3 days till we found the right fit. I suggest wait to see what suits him. (But failing that def go for Charlie)!

amitymama · 24/04/2008 17:14

Ok, I keep seeing this comment with regards to names so I just have to ask: what does it mean when someone says a name is "too American?" Is that just another way of saying 'weird' or something?

Not crazy about Preston, Austin or Mason but the others are nice.

charitygirl · 24/04/2008 18:11

LOL at amitymama - sometimes I think it's shorthand for weird, yes. But often (well, this is the way I would use it) it refers to using a 'surname' as a first name. This is quite common over here now too but I think it originated in the States

e.g.

Mason, Tyler, Brodie, MacKenzie, Taylor etc.

Of course, you can argue over what's a surname and what's a first name til the cows come home.

mustsleep · 24/04/2008 18:15

that's it charitygirl

Hi I'm not keen on Sid -- but mainly because I associate it with Sydney for a girl - it's the Ozzie in me. Jack - nice but pretty common. Christian don't like - went to school with a horrid one! The others I quite like. I fancied Rohan but my dh didn't we were going to have James or Benjamin (not shortened) mind you got 2 girls so didn't need them.

bungalowbelle · 24/04/2008 19:56

Dexter.
Roman.
Freddie.
Niall.
Lexi.

AbbeyA · 24/04/2008 19:56

I only like Jack or George. Sid is on the wrong side of middle aged! Preston is a friend's dog!!

Nappyzone · 24/04/2008 19:59

We had a few new babies at work today:

boys: Blane (he was really cute), Jude (actually they all were) and an Adam which i love but i am biased.

We struggled more picking a name for a boy than a girl....

sparklesandnowinefor9months · 24/04/2008 20:08

We're stuggling on boys names too! we have 3 and i've already used all the ones i liked for them

Jack and George are Lovely
Preston reminds me of that twat bloke who was on Big Brother
Austin - reminds me of Backyardigans!
Charlie - i like but i always think of girls with that name for some reason
Sid is very cute

Mason and Brodie are too American for me, but if your american then cool

i shall keep an eye on this thread and pinch some ideas!

bungalowbelle · 24/04/2008 20:25

I don't think the world can take any more Jacks or Georges surely.

I have a very common first name and it annoys me that every time I call someone up and say 'Hello it's X' They say, 'Sorry, which X. I know about ten Xs.'
