Which name of the below list would you prefer and why?

Our DD will be named Evangeline for strong family reasons but we want a shorter day to day name to use instead. I am not worried that some of the below names are not automatic nn for Evangeline or very linked to it, people won't bat an eyelid and Evangeline will just be for the Birth Certificate and passport anyway.

Our list is as follows:

Evelyn
Evelina
Evita
Evina
Elvira

Thank you!

I like Eva as nickname for Evangeline - Evangeline already has multiple pronunciations, and Eva can be pronounced as Ava.
If you don't want suggestions, I would pick Evelyn since other options are unattractive and Evelina is too long.

Redhoodie · 11/10/2024 14:51

I love Eva. My only concern is that we are eastern european heritage and we will end up calling her Eh-va (like the boy name Evan)...

And I am afraid we will spend a lifetime correcting people or she will learn to respond to some as Ee-va and to us as Eh-va...

I would love to have an Eva though!

What are the different pronunciations? I only know e-VAN-je-leen.

BananaGrapeMelon · 11/10/2024 14:54

Evelina is my favourite.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 11/10/2024 14:55

Eve, Eva or Evelyn are the only ones I like.

Tattletail · 11/10/2024 14:56

Aww I knew an Elvira, elvie for short. She was a lovely person and I always though it was a really nice name.

Phenomendodododooby · 11/10/2024 14:58

I know an Eavan in an Irish name it is basically pronounced Ee van. I like it.

DogInATent · 11/10/2024 14:58

Evie?

Elvira, Eva, and Evita do come with a certain amount of historical/pop culture baggage. Which may have expired by now, or may have by the time she's older.

clarrylove · 11/10/2024 14:59

Not keen on any of them tbh, so many ways to pronounce them, I think you will be forever correcting people. Have you ruled out Lina?

Elvie is gorgeous.

TheaBrandt · 11/10/2024 15:01

Oh god not Eve/Evelyn/Eva insanely popular every other girl is called this name it’s the Sarah of this generation. Definitely one to avoid.

CheeseWisely · 11/10/2024 15:02

Another vote for Eva if you love it OP. I know a German Eva (and she's one of my favourite people). Germans pronounce it one way, Brits pronounce it another way. She knows they all mean her!

SallyWD · 11/10/2024 15:04

Eva or Lina are pretty. I think both pronunciations of Eva are nice.

Run4it2 · 11/10/2024 15:07

My sister was Evie when she was little, and Ev as she got older

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/10/2024 15:08

I think all of the names you’ve suggested aren’t short enough for daily use - she will become Evie / Eve by the time she’s a teen (which is lovely but unfortunately very overused).

Eva or Eve are gorgeous if you don’t mind the popularity.

If you’re happy to be creative with short versions for Evangeline, how about -
Genny / Lina / Neve / Ginny / Elva / Lena / Nell ?

Inertia · 11/10/2024 15:09

All the names suggested look like totally independent names, none make sense as a nn for Evangeline. Some are long, and likely to get shortened again.

I’d go for Eve, Evie or Eva (though they’re quite popular currently).

Haroldwilson · 11/10/2024 15:09

I don't know why you're giving your child one name if you'll call her another.

I grew up with one name but being called another, it was a pain in the arse and I changed my official name in the end.

I also think nicknames evolve over time, you don't just pick them before birth.

So - give your child the name you want to call her. I don't see why calling her Evie or whatever can't be a nod to the great grandmother or whoever she's being named after, without giving the exact same name.

ChateauMargaux · 11/10/2024 15:17

We live in a multi lingual location with many different nationalities in our school and social communities - everyone gets used to different pronunciations.. and to some extent, gets them right and to some extent, people accept the pronunciations made by other people. We had a three friends in our group called Julia - all with different pronunciations - we probably mangled the Spanish pronunciation, but we made an effort - the German pronunciation was easier.

So Eva, Eh va, or Ee va.. she will get used to different people pronouncing her name but also to hearing how she and her friends / family pronounce it and making an effort to get it right.

Oompalooompa · 11/10/2024 18:18

I don’t think any of the listed names work as a nickname for Evangeline. They are all separate names.

Eva would be lovely. If you want the pronunciation Eh-va, that’s fine too - people will learn to say it correctly.

I love the suggestion of Lina.

Viavita · 11/10/2024 18:38

Agree all your nn suggestions are entirely different to Evangeline.
We have an Evangeline in the family ( she's mid 50s) - we call her Vangie.

permanently · 11/10/2024 18:42

I've taught a girl called/pronounced Lean.
So it would be pronounced as in her full name Evangeline, which is a beautiful name.
Could you go for that?

RaspberryBeretxx · 11/10/2024 18:48

I’d call her Evangeline in full and see what shortened forms she ends up being when she has arrived. It’s a beautiful name and . My dd is at nursery with a valentina, an Alexandra etc all called their full names (for now!). I think Evvi (pronounced as you would the start of Evangeline) is very cute.

sadeightiesthrowback · 11/10/2024 19:01

Eve
Angie
Ang Pronounced Anj
Vangie yes I actually went to school with a girl called Vangie.
Eline
Aline

FayCarew · 11/10/2024 20:35

Evelyn, Evelina, Evita, Evina, Elvira are all long and will get shortened probably to Evie or Ellie

Lina or Van might be better diminutives.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/10/2024 21:09

I’m not sure how Evangeline is pronounced in Eastern Europe, but of your diminutive suggestions Evelyn/Eveline (if pronounced as 2 syllables and the same way you would pronounce the Ev sound in Evangeline) seems the most natural shortening. All your other options either don’t really shorten Evangeline much imo or seem like quite different style names.
