Which name of the below list would you prefer and why?

Our DD will be named Evangeline for strong family reasons but we want a shorter day to day name to use instead. I am not worried that some of the below names are not automatic nn for Evangeline or very linked to it, people won't bat an eyelid and Evangeline will just be for the Birth Certificate and passport anyway.

Our list is as follows:

Evelyn
Evelina
Evita
Evina
Elvira

Thank you!

Evangeline is a beautiful name!

Evelyn is a name on its own, for me.

Evelina and Elvira are both lovely, but they are fairly common full first names in my Scandinavian home country, so I have a hard time seeing those names as nicknames, or shorter versions of other names.

Would Lina work? Or Eve? Angela?

Redhoodie · 11/10/2024 22:14

Thank you so much all, so much food for thought.

I am now in between Eva and Evelyn.

Eva will have to be Eh-va at home and Evelyn like Eh-veh-leen.

Out or the two?

Thanks all!

I liked Evangeline for my DD. Nn would have been Eve or Gigi

GretchenWienersHair · 11/10/2024 23:03

I love the name Evelyn.

GoldenLegend · 11/10/2024 23:04

I love Elvira if pronounced El-vee-ra. Horrible as El-vy-ra, though.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 13/10/2024 11:23

I prefer Evie, Eve or Lina.

I think Evelyn often gets shortened to Evie and is often used as a longer name by people who want to use Evie so sounds unusual to me at least to have it as a diminutive. That being said I don’t dislike it there are multiple pronunciations

maybe a bit more nicknamey but Gelly would be cute too, at least on a young child

TheaBrandt · 13/10/2024 13:39

At least Elvira isn’t super common but personally think it’s too witchy to actually use

NeckolasCage · 13/10/2024 13:41

Just go for Eva. She’ll end up as that anyway. It’s lovely, and I would just relax about the pronunciation. Maybe it will be your term of endearment that you’re the one who calls her your Eva - Ehva!

TheaBrandt · 13/10/2024 13:43

I seriously would re think. Eve names aren’t special enough they are so generic now. At one point one third of the girls in dds class were named a variant of Eve. It got terribly confusing.

We registered Dd for something as we sat down the teacher said “Eve?”. We said no not her name his response “worth a try every girl this morning so far has been called Eve”. That’s how popular it is.

Was that recent? Evangeline has never been in the Top 100 and I don’t think Eve has ever made Top 50 either! While I understand statistically there were masses of Evie’s, Evelyn’s and Eva’s about a decade ago - they are decreasing all the time now, so your area must be pretty unusual to have lots about currently!

(I’m in Wales and at baby/toddler groups in my area I have only met 2 Eva’s/Efa’s, 1 Ava, 1 Eve and 1 Evie - I go to lots of different ones and have never even met a toddler Evelyn, let alone an Evangeline!)

PurpleChrayn · 13/10/2024 19:04

Crazy idea.

Like saying she's called Jessica but you call her Jennifer.

If you want to call her Evelyn, call her that.

Otherwise just let the shortening happen naturally.

FayCarew · 13/10/2024 19:06

Babies with names beginning Ev in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)

@IamnotwhouthinkIam , if you add them all together and include Ava and Ivy, there are a lot of them. The popularity of each name might be a bit misleading, as Evie/Eva might be registered under a longer name.

I love Eva. My only concern is that we are eastern european heritage and we will end up calling her Eh-va (like the boy name Evan)...

And I am afraid we will spend a lifetime correcting people or she will learn to respond to some as Ee-va and to us as Eh-va...

I would love to have an Eva though!

I have learnt, and now know that Greek and Eastern Europeans are often pronounced Ayva and Ehva, so am mindful of how the person introduces themselves, and use their pronunciation.

I think that many people will be the same, but also that you shouldn’t be too offended/bothered if people you only meet in passing etc don’t pronounce it correctly.
friends will soon learn what your preference is.

SnowFrogJelly · 13/10/2024 19:16

Eva or Evelyn

Gigi is a lovely shortening of Evangeline.

Azandme · 13/10/2024 19:18

Anyone else watch House of Elliot years ago? Evangeline Elliot was Evie for short.

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 13/10/2024 19:20

Ellie
Elle
Evie
Essie
Ella
Eline

Vivie

Oh, definitely if you add all the names together, there will still be a lot - but nothing compared to a decade ago. And it will only be the same for Maya/Mia/Mila, Lily/Lila/Lyra/Layla, Sophie/Sofia/Sophia, Ella/Ellie/Elsie, Isabel/Isabelle/Isobel/Isabella… and so on! Many popular girls names seem to be very similar now - so I’m not sure the (decreasing) popularity of the “Ev” names should put OP off Evangeline if it’s her favourite.

TheaBrandt · 13/10/2024 19:57

I was extremely glad I realised how popular my first choice name was a week or so before having my first. Back to the drawing board. First baby group I attended 3 of the other babies were named the name I nearly used. So I think the popularity is worth mentioning. Obviously doesn’t bother some people but having a popular name myself I didn’t want that.

hereismydog · 13/10/2024 20:01

Evangeline is one of my favourite names, it’s so elegant. Would 100% be on the shortlist for this baby if DP liked it!

I think Eva is more of a natural diminutive than Evelyn. I actually prefer the Eastern European pronunciation of Eva, too. I’ve only ever known very lovely Eva/Ewas!

Zoomo · 13/10/2024 20:10

I like Eva best out of your last two.

But as others have suggested Gigi is nice and also Elle.

You may find that whatever you choose today naturally morphs into something else over time in any case. Come back in a few years and I expect her nn could be something entirely different.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 13/10/2024 20:18

Another vote for actually calling her Evangeline, it is a beautiful name especially with a family connection.

Don’t worry about the shortening right now, you might find something happens organically once you get to know her.

I’d choose one that you wouldn’t shorten to Evie. We have 3 in a class of 8 girls.
