I think it's awful too, sorry.

My friends have a "Bertie", two years on I still cringe a bit when I hear the name. Doesn't help that their surname also begins with B though tbh.

However, yes, it is an improvement on Rocky. That's a chicken.

We had Bertram for dd3 with the intention of her being Bertie but she was a girl. I still like it a lot.

@DeireadhFomhair I have no idea who/ what you're talking about so presuming that's a good thing !

Thanks everyone lots to think about
Wow naming my daughters was not this hard

Bertie Ahern was a notorious Irish Taoiseach in the late 90s/early 00s. Much like Boris Johnson, he was frequently referred to by his first name only.

I was a teen at the time so I'm not fully across the details but he resigned in disgrace after taking bribes from developers. I believe he once claimed that he hadn't had a bank account - when he was Minister for Finance. Confused

Much like using the name Boris in the UK may be seen as being politically motivated and would raise some eyebrows, Bertie would be similar in Ireland. Although I guess now more time has passed that may be slightly reducing.

@BarbaraHoward interesting !
We don't live in Ireland and aren't Irish

How about shorter: Bert?

KirstenBlest · 08/10/2024 14:35

Bertolino? Albertino? Hubert?

Middle name - something like the paternal grandfather's name, or something a big more ordinary like William, Arthur, Stanley, Henry, Philip, George...

My daughter-in-law's Dad and his brothers all have names ending in "ie". They hate it and use the name without it for everyday life, which is a good solution until they have to do anything official and must use their full, childish names, which they find rather embarrassing.

Definitely pay attention what his initials will be as it's possible he'll choose to use his initials or his middle name.

Love Bert and Bertie. Bert on the birth certificate.

How about shorter: Bert

I know someone who deliberately gave her DC the shortest possible names as she didn't want them to be shortened at school. Their school friends just lengthened them instead. So for instance Nick became Nicky.
