My dog is called Tilly. Fine at 4, hard name to have at 35.
both are ok as full names, but they will be shortened. I went off Imogen for this reason. ‘Immy’ is just a bad nickname!

Totally agree with you. Our neighbour has a golden retriever who is Tilly too. When we walk with our dog and see her we say Look Ddog - it’s Silly Tilly!

RedRobyn2021 · 05/10/2024 20:06

I really like both but would probably pick Ottilie

I think they are both lovely names, Ottilie is particularly pretty. I also wouldn't worry TOO much about names being popular.

Our eldest was born in the midst of the Olivia years and now aged 13 has never had a friend called Olivia nor ever had one in her class! And that name was top of the charts for a long time.

Still is!

I prefer Ottilie as Matilda seems done to death in my area, and most of them are Matilda Rose.

Ottilie is a little bit different, it gives off victoriana vibes to me which I like, though I prefer Ottoline. Tilly is cute enough too. Rose in the middle seems very unimaginative to me but people seem to love it. Rosa would be a nicer choice in my opinion and at least a little bit different, but then I much prefer an unexpected middle name

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 05/10/2024 20:21

Some very harsh comments! I know, the OP was asking and she received answers. I think they're both lovely names but I know more Ottlilies so I'd go for Matilda.

AutumnalCosiness · 05/10/2024 20:59

Matilda nn Tilda

Aglassaday · 05/10/2024 21:04

Both gorgeous in my opinion. Depends if you want to go a bit rarer or if popularity doesn’t matter to you as much. I work with children 18 and under and have come across many many Ottilie’s, sometimes more than one in a day which while it is a gorgeous name it is definitely very popular in my area (South England)

Happyher · 05/10/2024 21:06

I love Ottilie. I’d pick that one any time

lionrose · 05/10/2024 21:55

I really dislike otillie. Matilda/tilly are nice. Love Rose!

Presumably she won't call herself Tilly at 35, though? At that point she'll be introducing herself as Matilda and everyone will refer to her by that name. Or she might just be Matilda to everyone from birth - some kids just don't lend themselves to nicknames/abbreviations.

So like ott- ill- ee- uh ?

i would pronounce it Otilly, didn’t realise it was different elsewhere. I quite the like the sound of the European pronunciation if I’ve got it right. But I think people here would then think it was Otillia

I do think Otille is having a massive surge at the moment and for that reason I wouldn’t pick it

Yes a bit like that - but in Germany (it’s a name of German origin) I’ve also heard it pronounced as “Oh-till-ee-uh” or more run together as “Oh-till-yuh”. It actually sounds closer to Ophelia in sound/style than “Ott- ill -lee” to me and so nothing close to Otterly! I think it sounds really pretty, even if it is trendy enough according to stats that I’d probably stick with Matilda, OP.

I’ve only met European ones (it doesn’t seem popular where I am in Wales 🤷‍♀️) - so posters who really dislike the name or know lots of Ottilie’s - are you/they pronouncing the name the “Ott-ill- lee” way?

Bestfootfwd · 05/10/2024 23:50

I love them both .

LateNightReads · 06/10/2024 00:02

I cannot stand the name Ottilie. Go for Matilda

urbanbuddha · 06/10/2024 00:05

Matilda Rose is my fave from your list.
It's lovely.

Followed by, in order of preference ..
Rose Matilda
Rose Ottilie
Ottilie Rose

InTheRainOnATrain · 06/10/2024 08:23

They’re both lovely but flipping everywhere where I live. My kids are 7 and 3 and they both have 1 of each in their class and I hear them around a lot as well- in the playground, at activities etc.

Funderthighs · 06/10/2024 08:29

Ottilie, it’s a lovely name. My 25 year old niece is an Ottilie so it’s definitely not new/faddy 🤣

https://names.darkgreener.com/#ottilie 14 babies called Ottilie in 1999. I'd say your niece is rather rare! 579 in 2022.

ohpoowhatnow · 06/10/2024 09:24

Matilda is gorgeous and my first choice for a girl

WonderingWanda · 06/10/2024 09:26

Both lovely names but Matilda Rose works better together.

I’ll tell her she’s one of the 14! She’ll be chuffed to bits 🤣

Sallyanne92 · 13/10/2024 07:31

Otillie feels very trendy at the moment, Matilda is more timeless.

SemperIdem · 13/10/2024 11:11

Ottillie with the correct pronunciation is very lovely. Not so much with the British pronunciation, it suffers from the same issue as Amelie.

So I’d go with Matilda, assuming you’re UK based.
