Nn Tilly
Middle name Rose
One syllable last name.
…or just Tilly?

OP posts:

Tilly Rose seems a bit run-of-the-mill.
Matilda is OK but I dislike Ottilie.

RuthW · 05/10/2024 13:38

Matilda.

Not to my taste but less popular than Ottilie.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/10/2024 13:42

Ottilie seems overly fussy without actually being nice.
Rose is pretty but overused as a middle name.

Matilda makes me think 'proper little madam'.
Tilly is OK but seems a bit wet.

Lily is nicer, but every Lily seems to be Lily Rose.

Wwhatnow · 05/10/2024 13:53

Rose is a lovely name.

Matilda / Matty/ Tilly I don’t particularly like. Plus she’s likely to get teased about her character name sake.

Ottilie / Tilly / Ottie - I really hate. Whenever I hear Ottie I just think otter, sorry.

Isitreallythiscrap · 05/10/2024 13:54

As pp have said, otellie is awful and can't imagine a grown woman with that name. Matilda is just ok, tilly won't work as they get older either. Rose is timeless and nicer than both those names, plus you don't really hear it used much now.

DramaAlpaca · 05/10/2024 13:56

Matilda for sure

Moonlaserbearwolf · 05/10/2024 14:01

People are so ridiculously judgemental on here! OP, they are both lovely names and Tilly would be a great nickname for either.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 05/10/2024 15:17

"People are so ridiculously judgemental on here"

No, they can just say what they actually think here. I'd never say it to my cousins face but I think his daughters name, Ottilie, is ridiculous 🤣 poor kid.

OP asked for opinions on the names! If she wanted everyone to say both names are lovely and Tilly would be a great nickname there would be zero point of the thread.

Does Ottilie need to be pronounced a particular way that is not immediately obvious? Someone upthread referred to it being pronounced “Ottily” (which is how I would say it). Will it bug you if someone pronounces it the way I would? If so then go with Matilda.

Atishooo · 05/10/2024 17:15

Rose is lovely ,elegant classic and not commonly used, suits any style as an adult too.

Rose is the most overused middle name there is (along with Grace and May), it’s been done to death. Every girl seems to be a something Rose.

I don’t like either, Ottilie if I had to chose but both are quite faddy. Matilda was hugely popular about ten years ago.

In most of Europe afaik they pronounce the E at the end as a very soft “uh” sound (hard to describe!) - like the European name Hanne is 2 syllables as “Hann -uh” or Isolde as “Iz-old- uh”.I personally think Ottilie’s nicer that way with 4 syllables rather than “Ottily” as that’s a bit close to “Otterly” - but since it’s only just entered the Top 100 here, I think she could get either pronunciation 🤷‍♀️

So like ott- ill- ee- uh ?

i would pronounce it Otilly, didn’t realise it was different elsewhere. I quite the like the sound of the European pronunciation if I’ve got it right. But I think people here would then think it was Otillia

I do think Otille is having a massive surge at the moment and for that reason I wouldn’t pick it

Amdone123 · 05/10/2024 18:08

Matilda. I don't like Ottilie.
We have a Tilly in the family - I'd have preferred Matilda, but not my choice!

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 05/10/2024 18:28

Not Otterly!

Matilda is lovely.

Assuming by 'her character namesake' you mean the book character? Why on Earth would that be teasing potential? Matilda is cool, kids love Matilda. Would a Harry get teased because of Harry Potter? (Well unless his full name was actually Harry Potter - that would definitely be teasing potential!). Unless the OP's surname is Wormwood I'd say Matilda is a pretty safe choice, void of major teasing potential.

I think Ottilie is going to date really badly as it's come from nowhere and now there are loads of babies with that name. Matilda is definitely more timeless.

Hardly come from nowhere. It's in the same "category" as the likes of Amelia and there are royals with the name Ottilie same generation as William and Harry.

No, I don't mean as if it's a brand new name. I mean that it has been outside the top 100 forever but the past couple of years (in our part of London at least) there is one everywhere you go. Given how the ONS data lags a bit, I'm expecting it to have a big jump up the rankings, which will really date it. According to darkgreener, it was up to 83rd in 2022 and I'm sure will go even higher once 2023 data is released.

Same in our part of London. The most common name at nursery.

Crazyeight · 05/10/2024 18:58

I do actually like ottalie but I do think it's known as a mumsnet name. I prefer other ie/y names, Elodie, Rosalie etc.

MerryChristmasToYou · 05/10/2024 19:14

I should have said Matilda makes me think 'proper little madam' but not in a bad way. I don't like Tilda, other than the rice. Smile

There have been a few misspellings of Ottilie on this thread.

I don't like Elodie or Rosalie either, but at least they're not as bad as O-ilie.

mewkins · 05/10/2024 19:14

I don't know any Ottilies but it does sound like it's trying to be fancy but isn't particularly nice sounding.

Treesnbirds · 05/10/2024 19:25

I think they are both lovely names, Ottilie is particularly pretty. I also wouldn't worry TOO much about names being popular.

Our eldest was born in the midst of the Olivia years and now aged 13 has never had a friend called Olivia nor ever had one in her class! And that name was top of the charts for a long time.

GreenMarigold · 05/10/2024 19:27

Matilda is gorgeous and Tilly is such an a pretty shortening.

PermanentlyTired03 · 05/10/2024 19:30

AgainandagainandagainSS · 05/10/2024 09:37

Both are vile and Tilly is just Silly. Fine on a cocker spaniel, not a grown woman.
Rose however is a lovely name.

Edited

My dog is called Tilly. Fine at 4, hard name to have at 35.
both are ok as full names, but they will be shortened. I went off Imogen for this reason. ‘Immy’ is just a bad nickname!
