She’s a few weeks old. Can’t decide on a name, so please help by suggesting any pretty/lovely girl names you’ve come across in your years.

We like uncommon (but not ridiculous).

Thank you so so much x

You need to give us some parameters OP!

Pebbles16 · 03/10/2024 19:45

If you love a Z name then I love Zoë - it means life in Greek

PurBal · 03/10/2024 20:03

I'm not sure what is defined as "uncommon but not ridiculous" if I'm honest. I know 3 young girls called Hepzibah. More than the number of baby Jennifers or Sarahs I know.

If I was naming a girl:

  • Clara
  • Marion
  • Caritas

If you are really struggling and it starts to get too close to the deadline then consider giving her a longer name with lots of different nn/diminutive choices - that way you have more time to see which of the names eventually suit her! Ideas (some of the names may be common but not all of the diminutives are):

Elizabeth (Lizzy, Libby, Beth, Eliza, Betty, Bess, Elsie, Elsa..)
Eleanor (Nell, Elle/Ellie, Ella, Nora, Leni)
Antonia (Anna/Annie, Anya, Nina, Nia, Toni)
Emilia (Emmy, Millie, Mila, Mia)
Isabella (Izzy, Belle/Bella, Elle/Ella)
Genevieve (Genny, Ginny, Neve, Eve/Evie)
Christabel (Chris/Chrissie, Christy, Kit/Kitty, Tabby, Belle/Bella)
Cordelia (Cora, Cory, Cordy, Lia, Delia)
Juliet (Jules, Jude, Letty, Etty, Jet)
Josephine (Jo/Joey, Josie, Sephie, Effie, Finn, Gigi)
Magdalena (Maggie, Maddie, Mae, Lena)

I think you have to give us a bit of a clue as to what sort of names you like!
Are you looking for one syllable? More? Pretty, floral, very unusual?

Sorry no suggestions but just to say i had the same problem! Only decided when we were in the registration office😆

I’m so glad I’m not alone! So thank you for the solidarity. I feel somewhat guilty that I can’t just look at her and “know” 🙁

Some of these are beautiful. Thank you. Although I look at her and I just don’t marry any of these up to her face.

I think my postpartum hormones are making me go a bit doolally 😂

What names are on your shortlist OP?

I seem to lean into the “ee” ending ones. Like Maggie, Bobbie, Billie, Leonie etc

Pippi
Pippa
Fifi
Bella
Frankie (I adore this name) Would probably get called Fran for short.

There’s a few I “like” but I can’t just seem to be like “aha, that’s definitely you!” Though 😕 so it makes me feel like there’s one out there that I haven’t considered 😞

Hattie, Hazel, Lottie, Araminta/Minty, Marley, Frankie, Saffie, Shelby, Rosie (although, a few babies in our circles with this name so again, feels a bit close to home)

Edited

Yeah, I definitely am a fan of nickname style names. Josie is nice, and I do like Maggie but it’s not “the one”, I also quite like Annie
